After walking around Dillydale for almost an hour and meeting many more Mr. Men and Little Misses, Scarlet was starting to get tired. But she didn't say anything to the others since they seemed to be enjoying showing her around and talking happily to each other.

She stared down at her feet as she walked, glancing up often to make sure she wasn't falling behind. Turning her head, she spotted cars speeding past her. Then it was still and silent, before more cars flew by. Some of them honked at them, and Scarlet knew they must be wondering who she was.

Every time she met someone, they'd looked at her, confused and curious; even Mr. Grumpy looked interested to know where Scarlet came from. I just feel bad that I can't give any of them an answer, she thought as she lowered her gaze back to the ground. Frustration builded inside her. Why can't I remember anything?

Suddenly a voice seemed to speak in her head. Don't despair, Scarlet. There will be a time when you may seem lost and confused, but just remember, I'm in your heart and things will get better.

Scarlet slammed to a halt. That voice sounded very familiar, but she couldn't quite remember who it was. As she tried her hardest to search her memories, an image of a face appeared behind her eyes. It took a moment, but then she recognized the woman from the picture she found in her bag.

My mother!

Then her surroundings vanished, and Scarlet found herself looking up at her mother. She was sitting in her lap, and instantly she felt safe being with her mother, knowing that no harm would come to her as long as she was there to protect her.

"How are you doing?" her mother asked gently, smiling down at Scarlet.

"I'm fine," Scarlet replied without realizing it.

Her mother seemed to hesitate, before asking," How's… the others?"

The girl didn't know what she was talking about, but she heard herself answering without much thought. "They're okay. They keep me safe, like Mike told me they would."

Her mother nodded, and then frowned. "Trouble is coming, Scarlet." The girl widened her eyes, but said nothing as her mother continued. "Don't trust anyone. Okay, Scarlet? But remember what Mike told you. Ace, Ronn, and Jerry were made for your protection. They are the only ones you can trust. Do you understand?"

Scarlet didn't, but she felt herself nodding anyway. Her mother wrapped her arms around her and brought her closer to her, rocking back and forth. Scarlet felt comforted and safe, and she buried her face in her mother's chest. Her mother started humming to her, but her voice broke, and Scarlet was very confused.

Why is she so scared? Scarlet wondered, but before she had the chance to ask her, she heard far away voices, breaking into her vision, but as her mother faded away, the voices got louder until finally she could hear what they were saying.

"Are you sure she's okay?" a voice asked.

"Yeah, she's been staring straight ahead at nothing for a while now," someone else added.

"I'm sure she's fine." That sounded like the small Mr. Man.

As the vision melted away, the streets of Dillydale opened up before Scarlet's eyes, and she found herself looking at four concerned Mr. Men. When they realized she was back, relief replaced the worry in their eyes.

"See?" There was a satisfied look on Mr. Small's face. "She's fine."

Mr. Persnickety glanced at the small man for a moment before turning back to Scarlet. "Are you okay?" he asked her. "You wouldn't answer us when we called your name. We were worried something was wrong."

"And your necklace had changed to yellow," Mr. Messy told her.

The red haired girl hesitated, not sure if she should confess about the vision she just had. She didn't understand it herself, and she didn't want to worry her new friends. In the end, she just yawned and said," I'm fine. I'm just tired."

"But your necklace–"

Mr. Small interrupted Mr. Messy. "Do you want to rest for a while?" he asked Scarlet as he glanced at the others. "The park is just up ahead. Perhaps we should find a place to sit until she can carry on?"

Scarlet was relieved to see them nodded and murmured agreements; though Mr. Messy still eyed her necklace, and Scarlet slipped it inside her shirt, uncomfortable under his curious gaze.

"Can you make it to the park?" Mr. Small asked her.

The girl walked past him and said over her shoulder," Of course! I'm not helpless, you know."

The Mr. Men ran to catch up to her.

"I didn't mean that," Mr. Small began hastily, like he was regretting the way he had worded his concern, but Scarlet interrupted him by flashing him a smile, showing him that she was only joking. Amusement lit up his tiny black eyes and relief was visible on his face.

At last the entrance of the park came into view, and Scarlet pushed on. Her legs suddenly felt like they wouldn't hold her up anymore, but she forced herself to keep going as the Mr. Men followed a path farther into the park. She glanced around, taking in her surroundings.

As they passed more residents of Dillydale, they all turned to look at the red haired human. Scarlet ducked her head, feeling suddenly shy with everyone staring at her. She found herself scooting closer to Mr. Small, realizing she felt more comfortable around him since she knew him longer than anyone else. But at the same time, she was confused because she knew Mr. Nosy just as long, and he kind of made her nervous.

Mr. Small seemed to notice Scarlet's uneasiness because he smiled at her kindly and murmured," It's okay. They're just curious about you and want to know more about you."

I want to know more about myself, too, Scarlet thought, sighing to herself. She was knocked out of her thoughts when she saw that Mr. Men and Little Misses were starting to surround her. She looked around at all the faces, fear gripping her when she lost sight of Mr. Small. She backed away, but she bumped into something. Spinning around, she found herself gazing down at a blue man who had bandages on his head and lower half. She remembered seeing him walking down the street on her first day in Dillydale.

"Hello there," he said, smiling. "I'm Mr. Bump. What's your name?"

"S-Scarlet," the human stammered, looking around as everyone gave her a curious look.

Suddenly a voice spoke from outside the crowd. "Give her some space, s'il vous plait."

A few people parted to let Mr. Small and Mr. Nosy through. It had been Mr. Small who had spoken. He glanced around and went on," You're frightening her." After some of them murmured an apology, Mr. Small turned to Scarlet. "Are you okay?" he asked her as if she was completely helpless.

Scarlet felt anger wash away the fear. "I'm fine," she snapped. She tried not to let the hurt in Mr. Small's eyes bothered her as she glanced around at everyone who still surrounded her. She slipped past a couple of Mr. Men and found herself standing on the other side of the crowd, but she sighed when they all turned to her. Why are they so interested in me? she thought.

She noticed that Mr. Small and Mr. Nosy had followed her, and was now standing beside her. She raised her voice so that everyone could hear her. "My name is Scarlet," she told them. "I just got here a few days ago."

"She's been staying with us," Mr. Nosy added.

"I heard there was someone new in Dillydale," a Mr. Man called out.

Scarlet saw someone else nod in agreement. "Yeah, but I didn't expect this little girl," he muttered, crossing his arms. "I wonder where she came from…"

The red haired girl looked down and shifted her feet, wishing she knew that, too.

She was barely aware of Mr. Small beginning to talk to his friends as her surroundings started to spin around her, and she noticed darkness at the edge of her vision. She could hear several voices deep inside her mind, seeming to get louder the less she could see. She tried her hardest to make sense of what was happening, but she suddenly felt very tired.

It was then that she noticed the magenta Mr. Man, who she met earlier today, standing not far away, and he flashed her a wicked smile before starting to wave his hand around. She was just barely able to catch a glimpse of him changing into a cloud of black smoke as all sounds went mute and she saw nothing else.
