Life and Those Who Live It

Author Note: this story takes place on the night the Fellowship reach Lothlórien and the days following.

Chapter One – A Night for Royalty

Whilst the others slept, Legolas lead Aragorn up into one of the mellyrn trees so that they might speak without being overheard. They sat down on the small flet placed high in the branches of one of the trees.

"Tell me again Aragorn," Legolas began, "why is it that you roam about the world and do not remain in Gondor, where your word is law?"

"If I was to return to Gondor and take my place as King, I could never see the lands of Middle Earth and understand the many people who live there."

Legolas looked at him oddly. "You mean to say that you would give up life as a King of one of the great lands of Middle Earth in order to meet people?"

Aragorn turned and looked at Legolas. "I already have. And I would rather spend the rest of my life roaming free than tied to a life that I may or may not enjoy. "

Aragorn stood up and leaned on the lone wall of the flet. "But tell me Legolas, what brings you, a prince of Mirkwood, to such a quest?"

Legolas looked up and smiled at his old friend "Renach i lú i euri govannem? Renach i beth i pennen?"

Aragorn smiled wryly at his compatriot. "You told me that life and those who live it are a mystery. You told me that no matter where you are, you would always be whoever you are destined to be."

"I fear you still have not understood what that means."

"Nor do I expect to unless you explain it."

"I shall explain it in the morning Aragorn. The night grows long, and if we do not return to the group we shall be sorely missed. Come; tomorrow things may become clearer."

TRANSLATIONS
