WHAT IF? - SEASON 6 EPISODE 10 - THE MESSAGE

1. Int. Peter´s Room. Evening.
Danny is cutting the cast off Peter´s arm with a pair of scissors and is almost done, with only an inch or so being left to cut through.
Danny (parodying the first "Star Wars" movie):
Almost there ...
Peter (also parodying the first "Star Wars" movie):
Stay on target! Stay on target!
Danny (parodying the first "Star Wars" movie):
Bombs away!
He cuts through the last bit of the cast and pulls it off Peter´s arm. Peter scratches it for the first time in weeks and looks like he enjoys it.
Peter:
Ahh, that´s nice! You have no idea how much I´ve wanted to do this!
Danny:
Does it still hurt?
Peter:
It´s still sore, but I´ll live. Want to see where the bullet entered?
He shows it to Danny on his forearm, that it has left a nice little round scar.
Peter:
How´s that for a story to go along with the scar, to have to tell?
Danny:
Look, I´m still sorry that I didn´t run for help, like I should have.
Peter:
Someone did and that´s the main thing. Whether one or two of you would have run to get help, wouldn´t have made any difference.
Danny:
I know, but you´re my bro. We´re supposed to be able to rely on each other.
Peter can see that Danny still feels very guilty over what happened and smiles warmly at him.
Peter:
Nothing that happened on that day changes that. You´re still my bro too!
They do their secret handshake on it.
Peter:
Plus, how many other dudes would go so far as to arrange a benefit concert in his friend´s honor? That´s going above and beyond, dude!
Danny:
I just want to do my part in getting you back to full strength again.
Danny smiles back at him, but it´s still clear that what happened sits deeper in him, than he wants to admit to himself.
OPENING CREDITS
2. Int. Rehearsal Room. Evening.
Jenna is playing her latest song for her bandmates and it´s one every Degrassi fan should be familiar with, her most famous song "Mr. Perfect".
Jenna (singing):

She finishes singing and playing for her band mates, who all look at her with their mouths opwn wide, which makes her feel self-conscious of herself.
Jenna:
It´s bad, isn´t it? I should have known that it sucked, before I played it for you guys! I´m so sorry, if you hated it!
Mo:
Jenna, our mouths are wide open, because we had no idea that we had the new Michelle Branch in the band!
Imogen:
You actually wrote that?
A wide smile comes back on Jenna´s face from the praise, she´s getting.
Jenna:
Once I came up with the chord progression, the rest came to me pretty easily.
Adam:
That´s the song we have to play for Danny!
Mo:
I completely agree. Is he says no to us playing at his benefit after hearing that, then he has to be out of his mind!
Jenna´s face is one big smile at how well her song was received.
3. Int. Car. Evening.
Jenna is getting a ride home from her brother Kyle.
Jenna:
In case I don´t say it enough, thanks for doing this.
Kyle:
When something like what happened at your school happens, it puts everything into perspective. I´d rather be your personal driver, than risk having anything happen to you on the way home.
Jenna:
I wasn´t in any danger, Kyle!
Kyle:
I know, but if you had been a bit more unlucky, then you could have been. The thought alone of you lying dead on some high school floor or somewhere else ...
Jenna:
You´re over-reacting! But, if you want to continue to give me rides around the city, then you won´t hear me complaining about it!
They smile at one another.
Jenna:
They loved my new song, by the way.
Kyle:
I can see why. It´s very catchy.
Jenna:
You really think so?
Kyle:
It has radio airplay potential written all over it, if you ask me.
Jenna:
It´s just a shame that you´re not calling the shots at any of the radio staions then, huh?
Kyle:
Aren´t you just a little worried, of how KC will react to hearing it?
Jenna:
Why wouldn´t he like it? The second verse has lyrics like "You´re incredible, so good to me" and either way, he should know that it´s only partly about him!
Kyle:
Let me ask you this way then: You don´t think that all of those very personal sounding parts about how you wish he were different will reflect badly on him, when other people hear it? They´re naturally going to think that you wrote it about him, you´re hopefully aware of?
Jenna:
I hadn´t really thought about that.
Kyle:
If you want to make sure that he´s still your boyfriend after that concert, then I´d check with him first, if he´s okay with you performing it in front of everyone he knows from school, if I were you.
Jenna:
Of course, he´s gonna be. KC is super supportive of everything I do! I´ve never been more sure of anything in my life!
Despite what she said, there is a hint of worry on her face though.
4. Int. Hallway. Day.
Chantay is waiting for Danny and checks the time on her phone, indicating that she´s been waiting for him for a while now. Jane comes over to her and looks at her with sympathy.
Jane:
He´s probably busy getting bands together for his benefit concert.
Chantay:
That seems to be everything he thinks about these days.
Jane:
He went through something that had to be traumatic for him. He needs to find his own way of getting over it and if this is his way relieving his guilt, then it´s not the worst way of dealing with it, you have to admit.
Chantay:
I know and it´s not that I don´t want to be the good, supportive girlfriend in this situation. After how patient he´s been with me and everything he´s done for me, it´s the least I can do for him. I´m more worried that he´s using it as an excuse to push feelings aside that he needs to deal with, or it´ll all come out at once.
Jane:
All you can do is be there for him, like am being for Peter.
Chantay:
His mom is actually letting him come out again for the concert, or so I hear?
Jane:
Yeah, she´s been a real mother hen to him since he got shot! I think that he´s starting to long for coming back to school, just so he can get away from her!
Chantay:
Then it has to be bad!
They smile at one another, as Danny comes running over to them.
Danny:
I´m so sorry, but I had to talk to a band about playing at the benefit. I had no idea that it would take so long.
Chantay:
It´s alright. You´re here now.
Chantay gives him a kiss. Soon after, they see Jenna storming by them and looking angry, while holding her guitar. KC follows shortly after her and isn´t any happier, than she was.
KC:
If you play that song in front of people, it´s over, Jenna! I mean it!
She turns around to face him and gives him a stare in the eyes so hard, that it even makes Chantay shutter a little.
Jenna:
You don´t own me, KC! Get that through your head!
KC:
So, you don´t care that I´ll be humiliated in front of the entire school? Is that it?
Jenna:
It´s just a song, KC. Not everything I do, revolves around you! I know that might be hard for your fragile male ego to hear, but if you can´t handle that, then maybe we shouldn´t be together at all!
She storms off again, as people stare at KC, who looks uncomfortable at getting this kind of attention, so he hurries off to class.
Jane, Chantay and Danny take in, what they just saw.
Danny:
Talk about a burn!
Chantay:
I´ve seen more than my share of girls, who were angry at their boyfriends in my years here, but she just might take the cake!
Jane:
I wouldn´t bet my life savings on those two still being together a week from now!
Danny:
Have I ever gotten you that mad at me, Chantay?
Chantay:
If you had, then I sincerely doubt that we´d still be together!
Danny nods in agreement.
5. Int. Classroom. Day.
Adam is sitting by himself and is trying to write a cool band logo for their band, which has been given the name "Jenna and the Jenners". Jenna comes storming in and sits down next to him, where she folds her arms and sulks.
Jenna:
Boys! Have I told you lately, how much they frustrate me? Present company excluded, of course.
Adam:
What did KC do now?
Jenna:
He thinks that just because we´re dating, that gives him the right to tell me what I can and can´t do!
Adam:
You must have known before you started dating him, that he´s full of insecurities. If you´d grown up like he had, then I´m sure you would have had them too.
Jenna:
It´s not like my life has been a picnic either! If he thinks that I´ll go along with it and let him decide over me, then it´s over. It´s that easy!
Adam:
We both know that it won´t be, because you´d still like him, no matter if you´re dating or not!
Jenna:
Then I´ll just have to get over it! I´m not letting any man or boy tell me what to do and that´s the end of it!
Adam:
Tell me what you think of these logos for our band, that I came up with.
He shows her and she looks a little impressed with it.
Jenna:
You made these? They´re really good!
Adam:
Is there one, that´s your favorite?
Jenna:
Hmm ...
She thinks about it and points one of them out.
Jenna:
That one!
Adam:
Do you think it could be good enough to be our official band logo?
Jenna:
I can´t see why not!
Adam looks glad. KC comes in and for a moment makes eye contact with Jenna, who immediately looks away from him, though.
6. Int. The Dot. Day.
Chantay and Danny are sitting at a table together, but Danny is busy on his phone.
Danny:
You can´t let me rent it just a little bit cheaper? It´s for charity.
Chantay tries to look like it doesn´t affect her, but clearly doesn´t like that his attention isn´t on her. He smiles at what he hears.
Danny:
Twenty-five percent? I´ll take that offer, good sir! Have a great day too!
Danny hangs up and puts his phone down on the table.
Danny:
That´s the lighting system for the benefit taken care of. Now all I need is to find is a good sound system, that I can rent at a decent prize and we´ll be set.
Chantay:
You could ask the school, if you could rent theirs. Maybe they´ll even let you loan it for free, since the reason for the benefit heavily involves the principal´s son.
Danny:
That´s not a bad idea! See, this is what´s so great about us, Chantay. We´ve always made the perfect team.
Chantay:
You´re actually kind of good at this, you know that?
Danny:
It´s not that hard. You just make a list of what you need and then you find a way to get it. Simple as that.
Chantay:
I´m not sure that I could do it.
Danny:
It´s probably easier, when it´s your best friend, you´re doing it for.
Chantay sees her chance to talk to him about it, now that she has the chance to.
Chantay:
Danny, there´s nothing wrong with you, if it´s going to take you a while to get over what happened.
Danny:
I´m fine! It wasn´t me, who got shot.
Chantay:
You saw your best friend get shot right in front of your eyes! Even though he´s recovered fine from it, you can´t tell me that you´ve gotten past it in only a few weeks.
Danny looks frustrated at being made to talk about it.
Danny:
Chantay, can we at least not talk about it in here, where everyone can hear us?
Chantay:
You´re shutting me out, Danny! Let me help you.
Danny:
The best way you can help me is to let me deal with this my way. I love you and you´re my soul mate, but what I experienced and felt that day is something, you can´t ever begin to understand what was like.
Chantay:
Then let me try to understand it!
Danny:
We´ll talk about it some other time, okay? Right now, I just want to make sure that this benefit goes off without a hitch and then I can deal with everything else afterwards.
Chantay:
Okay, but the moment you feel ready to talk to me, I want you to let me know. Can you promise me that much?
Danny smiles at her and takes her hands in his.
Danny:
I promise, Chantay. You´re so sweet for how much you care about me, you know that?
Chantay:
I can´t help it. I love you, Danny.
Danny:
I love you too.
She smiles at what he said, but is still a little concerned, that he won´t open up to her.
7. Int. Hallway. Day.
Jenna and her band mates are high fiving, after their audition for Danny went perfectly.
Mo:
This could be the beginning fo something big!
Imogen:
If we don´t stink up the place at the benefit!
Adam:
As long as we have Jenna singing, it can´t go entirely bad!
Jenna:
I´m only one fourth of the band!
Mo:
Let´s be honest, it´s you they´re going to remember after the gig.
Imogen:
I hope that you´re prepared to write a lot of autographs, Jenna!
Jenna smiles at all of the praise, she´s getting. It fades a little though, when KC comes over to them and isn´t looking too pleased with her.
Jenna:
KC, before you say anything ...
KC:
So, you´re playing the song anyway?
Jenna:
I´m not going to not sing it, just because you don´t want me to!
KC:
That´s all I mean to you, that you´ll humiliate me in front of everyone I know? I never thought, you could be this cold, Jenna.
Jenna:
KC ...
She doesn´t get to say anymore, before he walks off. She looks sad, while her bandmates look a little unconfortable at what they were just witnesses to.
Mo:
If you don´t want us to play the song, then we´ll just play another one.
Imogen:
It´s really no big deal, if it´s going to cost you your boyfriend.
Jenna:
No, it´s okay.
Adam:
Are you sure?
Jenna nods sadly.
Jenna:
If this is what he´s gonna be like now, how will he act when we become bigger and I won´t have as much time for him, as I have now?
Adam:
I´m sorry. I know that you really liked him.
Jenna:
It´s really for the best. Sometimes, the boy just isn´t worth it.
She still looks sad, that it had to end this way, though.
8. Int. The Dot. Day.
Adam is trying to cheer Jenna up after school, but she´s still looking a little down.
Adam:
He´s only one boy out of hundreds at our school, Jenna. Not that you have to limit yourself to someone at our school, if you don´t want to.
Jenna:
Who´s gonna want to date me, if they have to scared that I´ll write some mean break-up song about them, if things don´t go like I want them to?
Adam:
I don´t think it´s mean! Critical of him for sure, but not mean as such.
Jenna:
Maybe not, but the more I think about it, the more I see how he could feel hurt, when he heard me singing those things. I can´t imagine how I would have reacted, if he had sung a song like that about me.
Adam:
You´re not giving in, are you?
Jenna:
No, but I don´t want him to hate me for the rest of his life either! Even if we´re not getting back together, I´d still like to be friends with him.
Adam looks at her with sympathy.
Adam:
It´s a big decision. What are you going to do?
Jenna:
I don´t know yet.
Adam:
You could always try talking to him.
Jenna:
I guess, it can´t hurt to try.
She doesn´t look all that hopeful, that it´ll work though.
9. Int. Hallway. Morning.
Jenna comes up to her locker, where she sees KC (her locker neighbor) getting things out of his own locker. She approaches him cautiously, while looking somewhat nervous at what´s to come for her.
Jenna:
Hi, KC.
He doesn´t talk to her or even looks her way, as she comes up to him.
Jenna:
We need to talk about this!
KC:
I can´t see what there is to talk about. You´ve clearly shown that you don´t give a damn about me anyway, so why should I waste any more time on you?
Jenna:
It´s just a song, KC! That´s what I´ve been trying to tell you! I don´t want us to break up!
He finally turns his head to look her in the eyes.
KC:
Jenna, it´s about more than that. You wouldn´t have written it in the first place, if you were happy in our relationship.
Jenna:
It´s not even about that! It´s just about ...
KC:
Some guy, you made up. That´s what you keep saying. You should know that I´ve put in a request to get a new locker, that´s far away from yours.
Jenna:
You can´t be serious! Now you don´t even want to talk to me anymore?
KC:
You made your choice, Jenna and you decided not to choose me.
Jenna:
Because you were trying to control me! Give me another chance, at least.
KC:
You can call me selfish, if you want, but I don´t want to be with a girl who´ll do that. Then I´d rather pretend, that she doesn´t exist at all!
He closes his locker and walks away from her. She has to shed a few tears, now that it really looks like it could be over for real. She doesn´t even notice Danny coming up behind her.
Danny:
Jenna! Just the girl I was looking for!
She turns her head to look at him and he can see that she´s been crying, which makes him concerned for her.
Jenna:
Well, you found me!
Danny:
Are you okay? We can do this later, if you´re not.
Jenna:
It´s no huge deal. I´ve just become single again, is all.
Danny:
I saw that lover´s quarrel you had in the hallway yesterday. If he´s trying to control you, then you´re doing the right thing by getting out now.
Jenna:
Actually, it was him, who broke up with me.
Danny:
You have my sympathies, then. It always sucks to be dumped.
Jenna:
I´ll get over it in time. What did you want to tell me?
Danny:
Oh yeah, that´s right! I need to shuffle the program around a little, which means that you guys would be going on last. Is that okay with you guys, do you think?
Jenna´s frown starts to turn into a small smile.
Jenna:
As in us being the headliners?
Danny:
If you want to put it that way.
Jenna:
Yeah, sure! We can do it!
Danny:
Great! I hope you play that "Mr. Perfect" song, you played for me. It´s a banger!
Jenna:
I don´t know about that!
Danny:
It´s is, if you ask me. Play that one and everyone there will be talking about you and your band, when you come to school on Monday.
He leaves her to wonder what might be. KC looks to have almost disappeared from her mind completely.
10. Int. Above the Dot. Evening.
The benefit is on and Danny has truly done a fantastic job in making it feel like it´s a special night at the place, with the way it´s been beefed up. All of his friends are there, just like most of the other faces that we know from the school are. Danny slaps hands with Peter, who looks glad to have been let out by his mom again, after everything he went through. KC is also there with Connor, although he doesn´t look like he´s having nearly as great of a time as everyone else is.
11. Int. Girl´s Room at Above the Dot. Evening.
The life of an amateur musician isn´t a glamorous one, as evidenced by Jenna and her bandmates (minus Mo, of course) being forced to change in the bathroom for their gig. That doesn´t change how excited they are for it, though and Imogen is perhaps the most excited of them.
Imogen:
Have you seen how many are out there? We´re practically stars already!
Adam:
Are you thinking that we need to come up with stage-names already, so the press won´t hound us all the time, Imogen?
Imogen:
If so, then I want to be "Imogina, the Princess of Rhythm"!
Adam and Jenna laugh a little at her quirkiness.
Imogen:
I´ll see you out there!
Adam:
Later, Imogen!
Imogen leaves them and they smile at one another.
Jenna:
There aren´t two of her kind in the world!
Adam:
Not even close to it! What would be your stage-name, if you had to choose one?
Jenna:
Can´t it just be Jenna?
Adam:
Sure, it can!
Jenna:
I saw KC out there.
Adam:
Jenna, if he can´t appreciate that there´s no girl in the entire world, who´s more beautiful than you or sweeter or more perfect in every way, then it´s his loss. If you were my girlfriend, then I would never want to change anything about you.
She smiles at him and looks a little flattered.
Jenna:
You wouldn´t, would you? Because that´s not what you´re like.
Adam:
You deserve someone, who´ll love you for who you are and who´ll wake up every day with a huge smile on his face, because his first thought of the day is of you. Don´t sell yourself short for anything less than that, you hear?
Jenna:
Yeah, but where am I gonna find a guy like that?
When she looks at Adam, she also realizes that she´s just answered her own question.
12. Int. Above the Dot. Evening.
Danny is on stage as the emcee for the evening.
Danny:
First of all, I want to thank you all for coming and helping to show, that we don´t want guns to be on our streets, where they can be used to hurt innocent people like my friend Peter, who got shot two weeks ago. It was ...
He has to stop for a moment and we get a few reaction shots from his friends and Chantay, who can see how hard this is for him.
Danny:
It was the worst moment of my life, seeing him lying there and having to wonder, if he would survive or not. I don´t think I can imagine anything worse than that, even if I tried. It´s something I hope, none of you will ever have go through too, because it´s just about the worst feeling, you can have, feeling powerless like that. So, before you pick up a gun and think about using it, take a moment to consider all of those other people you´ll hurt too, if you shoot someone.
Chantay looks proud of him for getting it out there finally.
Danny:
With that, it´s time for the main event of the evening! Are you ready?
He gets a cheer from the most of the crowd, with KC being a notable exception, since he clearly isn´t ready for this.
Danny:
Then help me to welcome Jenna and the Jenners!
Jenna and her band take the stage and their positions. Jenna steps up to the microphone, while holding her acoustic guitar of course too.
Jenna:
Thanks, Danny. This first one is a song I wrote about my EX-boyfriend!
She looks directly down at KC, as she says it, so that he won´t mistake the message.
Jenna:
A guy who proved to me, that sometimes they´re just not worth your trouble!
KC gets some looks from those around him, since everyone who have seen him and Jenna around together know all to well, that it´s him she´s talking about. When Jenna starts singing the song about him too, it becomes too much for him and he storms out of there.
13. Ext. Above the Dot. Evening.
Danny is catching some fresh air, when Chantay comes out looking for him.
Chantay:
There you are! Why aren´t you in there, enjoying your success?
Danny:
I´m basking in the relief, that this evening has gone as well, as it has!
She smiles at him and comes over to him.
Chantay:
I guess, I can understand that. Has it been stressful?
Danny:
Not really, I just wanted to do the best I could for Peter.
Chantay:
Maybe event planning could be a future for you. You certainly have a knack for it.
Danny:
You really think so?
Chantay:
If you managed to pull this together in two weeks, imagine what you could have done, if you´d had a month or two to do it.
Danny:
Perhaps it is something I should consider, as a possible future.
Chantay:
Look, Danny, I fully get why it´s hard for you talk about what happened and whatever amount of time you need to take to get there, is fine by me. I´ll still be here for you, when that time comes.
Danny:
I just felt so powerless, when I stood there looking at him.
Chantay:
Who? Jeremy? If it had been me and some crazy kid with a gun was waving it around and firing it off, I would have been so panicked, that I wouldn´t be able to do anything!
Danny:
Then you would have reacted the same way, I did. I guess, I always thought that if a situation like that arose, that I would be the one who could still think rationally and be the hero. In stead I just stood there, while my best friend was bleeding out on the floor of our gym. I couldn´t even get myself to run for help to save his life. I guess that I thought if I did this for him to make up for it, then it would make me feel better.
Chantay:
Has it?
Danny:
It´s done it´s little bit to help with it, yeah.
Chantay:
No one knows how they´ll react, until they stand in that situation. It doesn´t make you any less of a man, that you reacted in a natural way to it.
She gets a small smile out of him.
Danny:
You´ll still have me then, even if I´m not a hero?
She puts her arms around him and gives him a kiss.
Chantay:
You´ll always be my hero, Danny.
Danny:
Do you want to marry me someday, Chantay?
She´s a little taken back by the question, but still looks happy that he asked.
Chantay:
I don´t know what to say! Is this a formal proposal?
Danny:
It´s more like a promise that you´ll say yes, when I pop the question for real. When I met you, my first thought was "Man, that girl is cute"! What I didn´t know was that we would be so perfect together, or that here over two years after you settled for me as our second choice date for some dance, we´d still be together. I´d call that pretty incredible, wouldn´t you?
Chantay:
I´d call it nothing short of a miracle! Okay, I promise to say yes, when you ask me to marry you someday in the future. How´s that?
Danny:
It´s all I wanted to hear from you!
They go back to kissing.
14. Int. Hallway. Morning.
Peter is back at school and of course, everyone wants to hear how he´s doing after the shooting. Danny is with him and just looks glad, that things are slowly returning back to normal.
We cut to Jenna, who´s explaining what happened at the gig to Clare and Alli.
Jenna:
Senior girls came up to me and asked for my autograph! Actual senior girls!
Clare:
Welcome to your first taste of fame, Jenna!
Jenna:
Thanks. It´s a little overwhelming, I gotta say, but it beats being Ms. Anonymous around here, like I was before!
Alli:
Did any guys ask you out after the show?
Clare:
Of course, that´s the first place, your mind would go to, Alli!
Alli:
I´m just curious!
Jenna smiles to herself.
Jenna:
A few, but I wasn´t interested in any of them. Most of them were too old for me anyway.
Alli:
What qualities does a guy need to have, in order to live up to every point on the "Jenna Middleton Minimum Requirements For a Boyfriend List"?
Jenna:
He has to be around my age for a start. Plus/minus a year at the absolute most.
Clare:
Okay, so that counts over half of the guys here out! What else?
Jenna:
He can´t be controlling like KC tried to be or a jock, come to think of it. I mean, I don´t mind if he likes sports, as long as there are also some things, that I have in common with him.
Alli:
Like playing music together, for example?
Jenna:
That would work! He also has to be kind and nice to animals. That´s another must!
Clare:
So, to sum this up: You´re looking for a guy, who´s around your age, is kind, likes animals, plays music, can´t be a jock or controlling in any way? Did I get that right?
Jenna:
I don´t think that´s too much to ask!
Alli:
We´re talking about maybe one percent here, who´ll live up to those standards! You could be single for a long time, unless you lower them a little!
Jenna:
This time, I´m not settling for anything besides perfection!
Clare:
That all sounds fine and dandy. The question is where to find someone like that.
Jenna:
Believe it or not, i already have someone in mind.
Alli:
Who? Fess up!
Jenna:
Sorry, Alli! Not until I´m sure that he likes me first!
Clare:
Do you think, he does?
Jenna:
I think there´s a good chance, that he does.
Alli:
It´s a start at least. I just wish you´d tell me, who it is! Now it´s going to be on my mind all day!
Just as she said that, Adam comes up to them.
