This house lies in an unnatural turmoil; a lifetime's worth of possessions strewn about like so much trash. The white noise of the television fills the house, a sullen and bitter sound. I close my eyes and listen hard, trying to hear what the boy had heard, but all I can hear is the angry rumble of the empty air space. Just for a moment, I can hear the anguish of a sanctuary desecrated, the faint and powerful demand for healing and revenge, but I don't know if I can. I don't even know where to start. Wandering through the wreckage, I set the furniture back on its feet. Try as I might, I can't remember just how it stood before. A slow, burning rage flares hotly in my chest. I slam my fist down on the end table. I don't want it to be different when the family returns. I don't want them to remember how their house was violated; raped. Will this place ever feel safe again? Can they still call it home? Upstairs in the room at the far end of the hall, I imagine a sea of toys scattered across the floor. In my mind, the toys asre cast in an insidious light, a light that tells you that these toys were not left here by loving hands. The walls are naked, stripped of childhood masterpieces. Story books lay in a puddle like interrupted dreams. I walk up the stairs to the room and step in, eyes closed tight.
