...

"All our work is gone." Bruce sighs, "Ultron cleared out. He used the Internet as an escape hatch."

"Ultron." Steve repeats the name, processing the situation.

"Great", Quark gripes, "you named it."

As the superheroes and other ferengi discuss (argue) about Tony's right to build Ultron, Rom examines Ultron's makeshift body. Ultron was an A.I. with a body.

Well, had a body, Rom thought, turning over a mechanical arm.

Thor's return brought Rom out of his musings in time to see the thunderer lift Tony by his neck.

"Easy now", Quark says. He approaches the angry Asgardian with his hands raised. "Let's not make any hasty decisions."

"Come on, use your words, buddy." Tony croaks out, patting the arm holding him up.

"I have more than enough words to describe you, Stark."

"Thor. The Legionnaire." Steve says, both to get Thor off Tony and to return attention to the robot Ultron used to steal the sceptor.

Dropping Tony, Thor reports, "Trail went cold about 100 miles out, but it's headed north."

Hand to his chin, Nog says, "My father and I could modify some of Tony's scanning equipment to trace Ultron's flight path."

Rom nods in agreement.

Joining Rom at the exam table, Dr. Helen Cho examines a peice of metal. She eyes Tony as she speaks, suspision lacing her words. "I don't understand. You built this program. Why is it trying to kill us?"

After a pause Tony chuckles.

"You think this is funny?" A clearly unamused Thor asks.

The conversation derails from there. Everyone was blaiming Tony, seemingly forgetting that Bruce had helped create Ultron as well.

All Rom could think about, was that this event wasn't recorded in Earth's history. He'd met an android, a Liutennat in Starfleet. After meeting him, Rom looked him up. There were a plethora of scientific journals about Starfleet's residant android. It was believed the Liutennat and his brother were the first funtional androids. But here, on 21st century Earth, another android was created. Why wasn't this mentioned in anything he'd read?

"Thor's right. Ultron's calling us out. The world's a big place", Steve said, going into Captain mode, "Let's start making it smaller."

As the others prepared to head out, Rom approached Tony, who stood at the edge of the group.

"Come to chew me out too?"

"No, I, I- This isn't recorded in history."

"What?"

"This moment. Ultron. He isn't recorded in history as the first android. The first android wasn't built until my time, the 24th century."

Catching on to what Rom was getting at, Tony's brows crease in thought. "Why... Why wouldn't it be recorded?"

"I don't know. But if he was going to kill you and your team, I think it would have been mentioned somewhere."

Nodding, Tony resolves himself for what needs to be done. "So we destroy him before he can make the history books."

"I don't think..."

Tony ignores him and walks out of the room. Bruce, having overheard their conversation decides to keep an eye on Tony and offers his assistance.

"Please, Like I need you to tell me how to explode a refrigerator."

Rom is left to his own thoughts. His brother may call him stupid, but even he knows and android like Ultron would have made the history books. Whether he was destroyed or not. Something else was going on here.

...

Following Tony to the lab, Bruce asks a question that's been weighing on his mind since Ultron's attack upstairs. "Tony, is- is Ultron really a shield? Or is it a weapon?"

Tony pauses what he's doing to stare at his friend, hurt flashing briefly across his face before his usual mask of arrogance raises. "Why can't he be both?"

"Tony-"

"Bruce!" Tony snaps.

Bruce winces. Realizing he's making the inventor upset, his brows furrow and he raises his hands.

Sighing deeply, Tony rubs a hand down his face. "Look, Bruce, I know what you're thinkgin. But this isn't it."

Bruce caustiously approaches him. "You have saved a lot of lives. You would be in the right."

Glaring slightly, Tony says, "My old man used to say, 'An eye for an eye mentality makes a lot of blind men'. He didn't agree with the Inversion law and neither do I. Not even when I was selling weapons."

"Its what allows us to do what we do."

"I know. I guess its like Capsicle's shield like tht. It helps as much as it hurts."

"Kinda like Ultron?"

"Yeah, he isn't doing a lot of helping right now. I really need to talk to him about this rebelious phase he's going through."

Elsewhere...

A little girl lies down in her grandparent's home to sleep. Sleep, but not rest.

Her mother and grandmother lie down next to her on the floor, getting comfortable on the roll out mats they were accustomed to. They lay flat on their backs, breathing in deeply, holding it for five seconds, and then releasing it. They tense their muscles and release them quickly, relaxing into the mats. They close their eyes and their minds drift away to the land of dreams.

"Oyasumi, watashi no kodomo-tachi." Mutters the grandmother.

According to science, dreams are a succession of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that usually occur involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep. They are nothing more than synapsis firing off.

Some individulas believe they are visions. A way to tell the future. Many of claime to have premonitions, warning "flashes" that alert them to an unseen danger or a fortuitous event.

For this family, they are an escape. Not mearly a frivilous distraction from the harsh realities of their world, but truly a way to leave everything behind.

For you see, the mind is a powerful thing.
