In the Darkness

He'd been gathering berreis, he thought.

Someone had stolen his berries, he thought.

He pushed himself up off the ground, then crouched there, staring at it for a moment.

Not only that, whoever had stolen his berries had stolen him, and deposited him on a street that was cobblestone instead of dirt. Blinking, he looked around him slowly, at the buildings rising up out of the cobblestone street. The bright moonlight made him squint a little, but he stood up, continuing to think.

Come to think of it, now, he wasn't so sure it was berries. They seemed like some dim dream to him, the more he focused on them the mistier they got. This puzzled him; a few moments ago he could've sworn it was berries.

He set off down the street, deciding that maybe someone he met would be able to help him. Passing a store window, he glanced at it and stopped.

What a funny looking person. Heh, all gangly and put together wrong. What strange eyes, he thought, and reached out a hand. Pause. When he moved, the person moved. He backed away a step, then reached out again. Pause. This time because he'd managed to glimpse his own arm.

Smooth, black, the arm thinned a bit at the wrist, flowed out again into hand and fingers. No, not fingers. He clenched his fist. Claws. Amazingly flexible claws. Opening his hand again, he watched the dim light of the streetlamps play along the lines of his hand and fingers, shadows of translucent purple.

No creases, no wrinkles. Achingly perfect symmetry when he raised his other hand and held them together. Black on black on black. He looked into the window again, turned one way, then the other. Thin, lithe form, though maybe too thin. His arms stuck onto right angled shoulders, creaseless as well. His ribcage ending in an anorexic hourglass shape. His eyes went lower, he gazed with wonder at his legs.

To his knees they were about normal, other than entirely and deliciously black on black on black, but then they curved back rather sharply. A little later they curved forward again, ending in a pair of triple clawed feet. He picked one foot off the ground, looked at it closely. He flexed his foot claws, feeling each respond. He pounded themon the cobblestones, causing delightful little cacophonies of sound.

Looking back in the window, his attention turned to his head. Almond shaped, pointed at what he supposed his snout was. He prodded his snout a few times, but could find no sign of a mouth. This didn't surprise him as much as he thought it should. He traced his claws across his face, his head, felt the long, fluttering things at the back of it. Horns? No, much too soft. Some sort of ears, maybe? He wasn't quite sure. He tugged on them a bit, but they remained attached to his head.

His eyes gleamed at him from his reflection. Yellow, glowing, they called to him. he touched a claw to one of his own eyes, then put it delicately on the flass in front of him.

An excited ripple of sound went through the glass. He jumped back, surprised. Cautiously, he moved forward, pulled a claw along the glass. A delightful screech cut through the air. He trilled happily, then put all ten claws on the glass and pulled. Screeching note after screeching note, he'd never heard anything so beautiful. He almost danced, there, by the window, it made him so deliriously happy.

"Hey, you! Whadda ya think yer doin, eh?"

He whipped around to face the direction the voice had come from. A middle aged man was looking at him, squinting sleepily and with not much more than a robe on. Suddenly, the man's eye opened wide and he took a step back towards the open door inteh building.

"Who-- What the 'ell are you?" The man trembled, but found he couldn't move.

He flexed his claws, not sure what to do. He honestly had just been trying to figure the same thing out. Suddenly, his eyes caught something. A flicker, there, in front of the man's chest. No, IN the man's chest. Time seemed to slow a little, the flicker, the sparkle grew larger. Something inside him was unraveling, he could feel his claws spreading, stiffening. The flicker, the sparkle, it called to him, called to him like the yellow light of his eyes called to him. But this was blue, it was pink, purple. It grew, it dimmed. it called, called. He wanted it, every dark souled atom of his being cried for it, NEEDED it.

The man made to move.

He lunged forward, claws out and raking, and a glimmer came to him, some remnant of that berry picking past.

My name... is Owen.

He sat perched atop the building. Looking down he could see where the man continued to lay. There was a crimson pool gathering around him, and every now and then his hand would jerk, causing tiny delightful ripples of excitement to rush through it.

He turned back to what he held, what hovered between his claws. It was like he'd seen it, but it wasn't. Blue, pink, purple, hooded green, a sparkle that every now and then flashed forward, then ran back into the prismlike center of the object. He didn't know what it was, but now that he had it he knew what he wanted to do with it. The feeling inside him intensified, and he put the prism up to his snout, pushed it and found that his snout gave way, allowed the glimmering light filled crystal to enter him. It filled him with beauty, with light, with the wonderful feeling that he had destroyed something pure. How exciting, how tantalizing, he fell onto his back, looked up as the stars began to whirl around lethargically. Stars didn't move, but he didn't care, a rose colored haze rose in his sight, and it seemed to him that the stars sang to him, and the moon played the violin, and somewhere in the distance the screams reached a crescendo.

Endnote: And yes, I love the heartless. I love them. Love. Do you understand? No, you don't. But that's okay. I forgive you.

Owen is mine! RAARRGG!!

I hope you enjoyed this. Laters everybody.
