Tsu was ecstatic when she was accepted into UA. She was even happier to learn that she'll be in the same classes as one of her best friends. The cherry on top is the number one hero All Might was her heroics teacher. So why was she upset?
She knew the answer because it was pacing with anticipation next to her.
Katsuki Bakugo was the last person she wanted to be partnered with. The way he treated her and her friends all those months ago was still in the back of her mind. She wanted to see if it was possible to switch partners with literally anyone, but All Might said the teams were final.
"Don't think we should plan out our attack, ribbit?" Tsu asked. She knew they were running out of prep time and they hadn't even spoken a word to one another.
"All I need you to do is stay out of my way, frog face," Bakugo said with venom in his voice.
Tsu let out a disappointed sigh. She thought that he would push aside any grudge he has against her and her friends for the exercise but she was wrong.
"We're not going to win if we don't work together! Could you at least listen to my plan!?" Tsu knew their chances of winning were low and it was solely based on her teammate's lack of cooperation. He didn't look at the building's schematics that All Might provided them and he never even asked her about Fumikage. Wouldn't any hero value any resource they have on a target before jumping into a mission?
"I don't need a plan! I'm going to go in there and blow every feather off of that damn bird's face!"
"And what about Hagakure?"
"Who?" Bakugo said with a puzzled look on his face. It looked like he tried to remember who Hagakure was before waving it off. "Doesn't matter. After I take care of tweety bird they'll be slim pickings."
For once, Tsu kinda agreed with her partner. No offense to Hagakure, but she knew that Fumikage was their biggest threat. Placing first in the Practical Exam and top five in the Quirk Assessment test, she knew their hands will be full with him. Though it didn't hurt that she knew almost all of the ins and outs of Dark Shadow.
Growing up with Fumikage they both learned things about each other's quirks. She knows that Dark Shadow is attached to Fumikage but the quirk has a mind of its own. Fumikage wouldn't feel any of the attacks that Dark Shadow receives and vice versa. She also knows that they would have to take out both Fumikage and Dark Shadow if they want to truly defeat the avian teen.
The only weakness that Dark Shadow has is light and Fumikage's energy. Even though they don't share pain, Dark Shadow feeds off of Fumikage's energy, limiting the amount of time Fumikage could use his quirk. It was a good thing that Bakugo's explosions can create a form of light and if they were able to survive Dark Shadow long enough then they had a good chance at defeating Fumikage.
This would be a great thing to tell her partner but she knew he wouldn't listen. She also knew that Fumikage was telling Hagakure about her quirk, putting her team at a greater disadvantage.
"Hero team, you may enter!" They heard All Might's voice blare through a loudspeaker.
Bakugo didn't waste any time by bursting through a window. Now, if Tsu was partnered with anyone else, she would have them quietly sneak in through a door or window and search from bottom to top while she scaled the building on the outside and search from top to bottom. But since her partner was Bakugo, she was going to have to follow him and make sure he doesn't kill her friend. With a sigh, Tsu hopped through the broken window and chased after her partner.
It didn't take long for her to find her partner, she could hear him marching down the hall the second she came through the window. She saw him looking around the hall but he ignored any door they came upon.
"Shouldn't you be checking the rooms? They probably hid the bomb in one of them, ribbit," Tsu chastised the boy. She also wanted to tell him that he was being too loud but she bet the blond wouldn't care.
"They wouldn't have hidden the fucking thing on the first floor. They probably didn't even think about doing that. It's most likely on one of the top 3 floors" Bakugo shot back.
Tsu was taken aback by his logic. It made sense because everyone thinks the top floor would be the safest place to hide something that they tend to forget it's the most obvious place to look. Hell, if she were on the villain team, she would've hidden the bomb on one of the top floors as well.
Bakugo continued to ignore any door they saw until they reached the third floor. He changed his approach by quieting his steps and slowly moving through the corridors. He opened a door and saw nothing. He moved to another one, leaving the door open.
He continued his approach for the remaining doors until they were all checked. He made his way to the stairs when he heard something. He turned around just in time to see one of the doors closing. He raced to the door with his hands popping like firecrackers.
He swung the door open to find no one.
He groaned with frustration, but then he heard more doors closing behind him. He turned around to see one door after the other being closed. Tsu couldn't use her tongue to capture them because she didn't know where her target was moving. Bakugo growled and chased after the person with his quirk ready.
"Get back here!" He yelled out to them. Tsu wanted to stop him but Bakugo had some type of tunnel vision so she thought it would be better to follow him. Luckily, they heard the person they were chasing run to the stairs.
Bakugo didn't hesitate to chase after them but Tsu stayed behind. She started to think that maybe the person wanted to be followed and they were leading them into a trap. But she also knew that the bomb was on one of the next two floors and she didn't want to waste time breaking a window or running for the exit and climbing up the side of the building.
Deciding to bite the bullet, Tsu chased after her teammate.
After reaching the fourth floor, Tsu quickly noticed that it was dark, only able to see her hand moving in front of her face. She heard her teammate's explosions and was able to see the light that emitted from them. She ran to her partner and barely saw him panting.
"Where did that bitch go!?" Bakugo said through gritted teeth. Tsu was about to reprimand him for running ahead when she heard something slither behind them. The two heroes in training looked behind them to see a lone figure standing in the middle of the corridor.
"Welcome heroes to our Revelry in the Dark!" Fumikage outstretched his arms and Dark Shadow came barrelling towards them. Bakugo threw out his right arm for an explosion but Dark Shadow grabbed his arm and threw him against the wall.
Seeing an opportunity to attack, Tsu shot her tongue at Fumikage. The avian teen easily sidestepped her attack and Dark Shadow placed their attention on her. The shadow quirk towered over her and appeared as if it was about to consume her before Bakugo blasted it from behind.
"Don't forget about me, you bastard!"
Bakugo fired off explosion after explosion on the shadow quirk. Dark Shadow backed off from the assault from Bakugo and regrouped with Fumikage to plan out their next attack. Not giving them a chance to breathe, Bakugo rocketed toward the two.
Tsu followed his lead but stopped in her tracks when she felt something wrapped around her. She looked and saw some tape wrapped around her waist and she groaned with frustration.
"Young Asui is out!" All Might's words confirmed her suspicions, she was wrapped in capture tape.
"Sorry, Asui," she heard Hagakure apologize.
"It's fine," Tsu shot back, taking a seat against the wall. Sure, she wished she had been more useful during the exercise, but because her partner was stubborn and wouldn't even let her tell him her plan, there wasn't much she could do.
Back with the boys, Fumikage quickly relayed his plan to Dark Shadow. He handed his quirk the capture tape and when the two saw Bakugo was close, Dark Shadow set the plan into motion.
Dark Shadow lunged at the flying boy, wrapped around him, and trapped him in a shadowy bubble. Fumikage almost celebrated a little when Dark Shadow trapped Bakugo but held back when he saw Dark Shadow start to bubble. Bakugo burst from the shadow bubble, drenched in sweat with a scowl on his face. After taking so much damage, Dark Shadow retreated into Fumikage leaving the avian teen defenseless.
"Did you really think that would be enough to defeat me!?" Bakugo panted. He heard Hagakure sneaking up behind him so he grabbed her arm and threw her at Fumikage. She landed with a heavy thud and Fumikage quickly checked up on his partner.
"Are you ok?" He asked. He received a painful groan in response.
"My head," Hagakure managed to mutter.
Everyone heard a light ding and Fumikage saw Bakugo with a sadistic smile on his face. He pointed one of his gauntlets at them and held on to the pin.
"These bad boys have been filling up with my sweat the moment I put them on! When I pull this pin, it'll release a massive explosion that'll wipe you off the face of the earth!"
"Bakugo don't! You'll kill them!" All Might voiced out worriedly through the loudspeaker.
"They won't die if they dodge!" Bakugo pulled the pin.
Time slowed down for everyone in the room. Fumikage saw the explosion coming right at him and Hagakure. He didn't have time to pick her up and carry her out of the way and Dark Shadow was too weak to take a blast like that. With no other options, Fumikage raised his cloak to cover him and Hagakure from the blast.
Tsu didn't waste a second to react. She shot her tongue at Bakugo's wrist and redirected his attack. The shot blasted through the wall leaving behind a huge hole and even damaging part of the building that was across from them.
A loud buzzer rang throughout the hallway.
"Enough, Bakugo has been disqualified, meaning that the villain team wins! Come to the monitoring room! NOW!" All Might said sternly.
Tsu ran over to her friend who was slowly getting up. She couldn't see any injuries but his cloak was damaged.
"Are you guys ok?" She asked worriedly. Fumikage coughed but he managed to give her a thumbs up.
"Yeah, my cloak seemed to have taken the brunt of the attack," Fumikage said before looking over at Bakugo. The blond had a frustrated look and Fumikage didn't think it was caused by him being disqualified.
The four made it to the monitoring room. Their classmates looked worried but then looked relieved when they didn't see any serious injuries. All Might, on the other hand, was slightly heated. Even though he still had his signature smile on his face, everyone could tell that he was the furthest from being happy.
"Bakugo, hand me your gauntlets and head straight to the principal's office! You're done for the day!" All Might said sternly. Bakugo's eyes widened and he looked like he wanted to argue, but All Might's aura told him that would be the dumbest idea in the world.
"Tch," Bakugo furiously took off his gauntlets and shoved them into All Might's hands. He then marched out of the room muttering incoherent nonsense. All Might disappointedly shook his head at the scene.
"I planned on assigning an MVP to the student that went above and beyond but after what happened I think it's best to move on to the next matchup," All Might said and no one argued. He reached into the hero and boxes and pulled out a ball from each box.
Shinso read over the floor plans before he and his teammate had permission to enter the building. His hero costume was a black short-sleeved shirt, gray shoulder pads, purple chainmail arm sleeves, and black fingerless gloves. He also wore black pants with purple ring designs around his shins and white boots with purple tips. He also had a utility belt that mostly carried medical equipment and mini speakers on his legs.
But his most important piece of equipment was the voice modulator on his face. He wasn't the most physically gifted person in the world, so he knew he was going to need some type of equipment to make his quirk super effective. With the voice modulator, he knew that if he could mimic someone's voice then he'll be one of the more effective underground heroes, and this exercise is a good way to test out that theory.
Well, it would if his partner wasn't scared of him.
Ochaco Uraraka, the first person at UA he used his quirk on, was doing her best to avoid him. Her hero costume is a skin-tight black bodysuit with some pink designs. She had pink wrist guards, pink knee-high boots, a pink belt, and a pink helmet with a pink visor.
Now, Shinso knew he wasn't an idiot, furthest from it. He knew that whoever he used his quirk on would be apprehensive around him. He knew during his time at UA he would have to work with them, but he didn't think it would happen the next day. This was going to be a problem for both of them if they can't move past the brainwashing incident, but he understood why, he'd be upset too if someone brainwashed him out of the blue.
"I might have a plan for how we could win," Shinso spoke up to break the ice. Uraraka squeaked and shoved her face into the building plans. Shinso groaned and dragged a hand down his face. He should've known that she wouldn't talk to him after what happened.
"Listen, I'm sorry for brainwashing you. I didn't want to get expelled and after seeing how high you scored in the ball throw I knew you were the best person to help me," Shinso said with total sincerity. Uraraka didn't waver, causing Shinso to sigh. He wasn't good at apologizing or socializing, to be honest. Years of self-isolation made him lose touch with his peers.
"Look, I'm not good at this, but I want you to know that I wouldn't have brainwashed you if I didn't think your quirk would've helped me," Shinso told her, which seemed to get a rise from the girl.
"Really? You think my quirk is useful?"
"Uh, yeah."
"I'm glad. The only people to ever tell me that my quirk was useful were my parents," Uraraka revealed. Shinso could sympathize with her to an extent. Growing up, no one ever considered his quirk useful for hero work or for anything, except for being a villain. "So what's your plan?"
"Oh, um, right…" Shinso cleared his voice to get back on track. Their opponents were Eijiro Kirishima and Denki Kaminari, both physically gifted students with powerful quirks but lacking in the intelligence department. "I was thinking that we should use your quirk to levitate us up to either the fourth or fifth floor."
"You think they hid the bomb on one of those floors?" Uraraka inquired and Shinso shook his head.
"No, they probably hid it on either the first or second floor. I was studying everyone during the first test and Kaminari and Kirishima seemed to like the idea of hiding the weapon on the lower floors," Shinso told her. He didn't condone what Bakugo did but he was onto something when he said that no one would think to hide a weapon on the lower floors. It's a sound plan if no one knows about it, but since Bakugo pointed out the possibility the lower floors will be the first place people look.
"So your plan is we sneak in and take them by surprise!" Uraraka said excitedly and Shinso moved his head in a way that said she was partially right.
"Kind of. We are going to sneak in but I don't want to get into any fights with either of them," Shinso told her. He knew that if they were to fight either boy then they would surely lose since they were not one of the strongest students in their class, but they would have a better chance at winning if they had one of them on their side.
"Hero team, you may enter!" All Might's voice blared through the loudspeaker.
Uraraka didn't waste any time putting their plan into motion by touching her cheek and Shinso's shoulder and levitating them up in the air. She only managed to get them to the third floor before the effects of her quirk kicked in.
"Sorry, I can only handle so much weight before I get nauseous," Uraraka told Shinso.
"It's fine, this will work too," he said and he led them down the stairs.
They kept their bodies low and remained in the shadows so as not to be seen by either Kirishima or Kaminari if either one of them decided to come looking for them. They kept their ears peeled for either boy's voice. They couldn't hear them clearly but they could hear Kirishima's voice through the floor.
The hero team went down one final flight of stairs and quickly but also quietly moved to where they heard Kirishima's voice. They saw an opening and the bomb too, but they didn't charge ahead. They kept to their plan and hugged the walls and then dived behind the closest pillar before either member of the villain team saw them. They listened in on the villain team's conversation as Shinso messed with a dial on his voice modulator to mimic one of the boy's voices.
"Are you sure about this, man? I still think we should've moved the weapon to the second floor at least," Kirishima said with clear doubt in his voice. His hero costume was just a pair of black baggy pants being held up by a belt with an R on the buckle, half of a torn red cape that was attached to the belt, and a pair of dark red boots. He also had two dark red gear-shaped shoulder pads, a black sash going down his chest, and a black wired headgear.
"Don't worry about it. You remember what Bakugo said, they probably didn't think we hid the bomb down here and ran straight to the higher floors," Kaminari said to calm his friend's worries. His hero costume was a simple white shirt underneath a black jacket with lightning designs, black pants, and brown sneakers. The only thing that stood out about his costume was the earphone covering his right ear.
Kirishima slightly grimaced.
"Yeah, but this doesn't feel manly, tricking our classmates. How can any of us show our skills if we never run into each other?" Kirishima said, which caused Kaminari to give him a funny look.
"Isn't that a good thing? I don't want to hurt Uraraka," Kaminari then shivered. "And I really don't want to face off against Shinso."
"Why not? He doesn't look that strong," Kirishima raised an eyebrow and Kaminari gave him a surprised look.
"Did you not see what he did to Uraraka in the quirk assessment test!? He didn't even look remorseful afterward."
"Maybe you're assuming things because you were scared," Kirishima theorized. He doesn't believe that Shinso is a bad person, just misunderstood.
"Whatever, let's just wait until they show up or the timer runs out," Kaminari gave up and the two went to separate parts of the room and waited for the hero team to arrive.
Seeing this as a perfect opportunity to strike, Shinso quietly tested out his voice modulator to see if he sounded like Kirishima. Uraraka gave him a thumbs up and the two quietly made their way over to Kaminari. They hid behind a pillar that was the closest to the blond and waited a few seconds to make sure he didn't see or hear them. He didn't move from his spot, allowing Shinso to put his plan into action.
"Hey, Kaminari, can you do me a favor, man?" Shinso did his best Kirishima impression and Kaminari didn't seem to notice anything out of the ordinary.
"Yeah, what do…" Kaminari's eyes glossed over and Shinso took off his voice modulator, revealing a devilish smirk. He then pointed at Kirishima, who hadn't noticed what was going on behind him, and gave his order.
"Hold him off while we secure the bomb."
Kaminari absent-mindedly walked over to Kirishima and wrapped his arms around the redhead. Kirishima was slightly taken aback by the action but he didn't seem to mind.
"Hey, I'm all for hugging your bros but I don't think this is the time or place for it," Kirishima told his partner. Kaminari didn't let go, he held on tighter to the boy. Kirishima started to squirm out of Kamiri's hold when he heard a buzzer go off.
"The hero team has recovered the weapon, making them the winners!"
Kirishima turned around and saw both Shinso and Uraraka with their hands on the makeshift bomb. He then heard Kaminari groan and felt the blond boy loosen his hold on him.
"Uh, what happened?"
"We lost," Kirishima told him bluntly.
"Aw, man!"
The four students returned to the monitoring room to mixed reactions. Some were praising Kirishima and Uraraka for their hard work, some were teasing Kaminari for costing his team, but a majority of them were giving Shinso dirty stares. The boy in question took the stares in stride as he stood with Fumikage's group.
"Before we crown an MVP I would first like to congratulate the hero team on a quick and decisive victory!" All Might started clapping and the students followed his example, but it wasn't hard to figure out that their applause was going to Uraraka. "Now, can you tell me who you believe was the MVP in this exercise?"
"It was Shinso, sir," the girl with the big ponytail said. Some of the students gave her weird looks and were ready to argue with her but All Might held up his hand to prevent any arguments from starting. He then signaled to the girl to allow her to explain her choice. "He was able to study us and figure out how we would act in the trial. He knew where Kirishima and Kaminari would hide the bomb and came up with a plan to easily defeat them."
"You are correct, young Yaoyarozu," he told her before turning to Shinso. "Young Shinso, with your big brain and amazing schemes you'll make a fine hero one day!"
Shinso stood in stunned silence as All Might continued with the lesson. It was the first time in his life that someone actually believed that he could be a hero. A weird emotion filled up inside him, something he wasn't used to feeling growing up, pride.
The final bell rang and everyone was leaving to go home or any after-school activity they had lined up. Fumikage and Tsu were walking down UA's front steps after their last period, which was a makeshift study hall that Class 1-A used to discuss how they could improve themselves. It was a great way for everyone to learn what they needed to improve on and everyone's names too. Bakugo didn't return from the principal which did raise some questions about what was going to happen to him, but it was a topic that they didn't want to spend too much time on.
"Hey, guys!" The two friends looked up to see Izuku waiting for them at the front gate. The two raced over to him, causing a small scene.
"What are you doing here?" Fumikage asked when the duo reached him.
"I just thought it would be a good idea to walk home together and talk about our day. But if you guys hate the idea…" The duo instantly said they liked to walk home together and Izuku laughed. The childhood trio started walking to the station when they noticed that people were staring at them. They didn't make it far when they heard someone call out to them.
"Wait up! Are you guys heading to the station? Let me join you!"
The trio saw a pair of floating clothes running up to them.
"Man you guys are fast," Hagakure said, slightly out of breath. She then quickly realized there was someone she didn't recognize standing with the duo. "Oh, hello, I'm Toru Hagakure."
"I'm Izuku Midoriya, it's nice to meet you," Izuku responded with a polite bow.
"So is this the guy you're dating?" Hagakure asked out of the blue. Both Izuku's and Tsu's faces turned bright red and Fumikage tried his best to diffuse the situation. Tsu quickly waved off her friend's attempts and regained her composure.
"Yes he is, and I kinda wanted to talk to you about Izuku. Alone," Tsu directed that last part to the other two who were standing with them. Hagakure instantly got the hint and grabbed Fumikage's arm and dragged him away.
"Come on Fumi, I know of an ice cream place close by!"
Fumikage tried to squirm out of her grasp. He asked Dark Shadow to help him but the shadow quirked helped Hagakure by pushing him. Both Izuku and Tsu chuckled a little while watching the scene play out.
"So, should we get going?" Tsu asked the green-haired boy.
"Sure, there's a park close by. We can talk there," Izuku said.
As they were walking to the park, Izuku was dreading what Tsu wanted to talk about. She didn't seem upset with him when she asked him but that could've been a facade because Fumikage and Hagakure were with them. It's definitely not about his secret so it must be about their relationship.
'Does she want to break up? I hope not because I'm enjoying the moments we have together but I also don't want to ruin our friendship,' Izuku said in his head. They made it to the park and Izuku quietly gulped. 'Whatever this is going to be I hope it's good.'
