Mulder's ApartmentHis heart was breaking as she cried. He knew it had scared her… it scared him. All he could do was hold her until finally her shaking eased.
"I'm so sorry Scully." Sniffling, she loosened her hold on his shirt. Mulder lifted slightly just to see her face.
"I tried to shoot him Mulder. He's not… human. Oh God Mulder. I could feel him, I SHOT him but the bullets… they didn't even faze him." Scully reached down and lifted her blouse revealing only one large puddle of blood. Her blood.
Still cradling her with one arm, Mulder wiped away some of her blood. Seeing no wound he looked at his partner quizzically.
"How does he do it Scully?"
Looking at her chest she shook her head. "He just digs right in. No knife, no… nothing. I don't get it Mulder. Your neighbor just imagined all of this, but it hurt like hell. He was here. No fictional character can do that." She looked up at Mulder. "Where's your neighbor?"
"In the basement." With a firm grip on his partner, Mulder slowly rose from the ground.
Once on her feet, Scully started to sway and her face turned white. Mulder tightened his hold on her, but her knees gave out.
"Scully!" He caught her and lifted her into his arms.
"Thanks." Scully said resting her head on his shoulder.
"Any time." Mulder looked down at his weary partner's face. "You okay?"
"Blood loss… I…"
"I can fix that." Thankful blood was all she needed, and wasn't dead, he smiled and carried Scully out of his apartment.
DC General Hospital2 hours later
After arriving at the DC General, Scully was given 2 pints of blood. The attending nurses were puzzled by what caused the blood loss. They kept asking questions and wanted to run extensive tests to make sure Scully didn't have any other injury, but after a great deal of negotiation, the nurses agreed to keep silent and Scully agreed to stay overnight.
Mulder sat on the edge of Scully's bed holding her hand in the usual "Mulder/Scully" fashion. They were both grateful to finally be left alone to talk about what had happened just a few hours before.
"How you feeling partner?" Mulder made a half-hearted attempt to lighten the mood.
"I'm… confused." She looked Mulder in the eye. "I saw him. I, I felt him, the effects of him. Even now, I feel like I tried to lift weights twice my size. He was there, then he just… disappeared."
"This man, he was there, but only to do what his creator had imagined. My neighbor is dead. In the time it took me to get from the basement to you, he imagined the killer would leave you and kill him. That's why he disappeared."
Scully pondered for a moment what Mulder had said and then turned to look out the window wondering what other things this crazy man had imagined in his lifetime.
