Smile

I glanced at him from the corners of glaring eyes. And there it was. He had that stupid grin on his face, just like always. What nerve he had to wear that cocky smile. He didn't deserve such confidence, considering his skills in ninjutsu were, in fact, comparable to that of a clinically retarted eight year old. He didn't deserve to look so smug.

Everyone hates him, too, I thought. He didn't have any friends, and his parents had abandoned him. What reason did he have to smile? Any normal human being would be hateful. Any normal kid he would be bitter and vengeful towards that Hokage who had cursed him with the demon-fox.

But Naruto Uzumaki wasn't normal. He had always been different, but not just because of the unusual circumstances that surrounded him. It was that optimism, that tangible energy that surrounded him, that iron will to succeed despite all odds.

It was all in that smile of his.

Looking at him, I couldn't help it. I smiled, too. He noticed, and I quickly turned away. Was I blushing? I heard him laugh, but he didn't say anything. When I turned around, there it was. Just like always. Only this time, he was smiling at me. I risked a small grin, then shook my head and sighed.

"Idiot…"
