A/N: I'm so excited for Willifer content in the new series of CM!
"Come on JJ! This way!"
"Hey, slow down! You'd think this was your gym, not mine," JJ laughed as she followed a hyperactive Bailey-Rose through the foyer of Romero's later that morning. "Also don't shake those brownies around like that or they're going to be mush!"
"You're gonna be mush!" Bailey-Rose retorted in a singsong voice, making JJ snort as she fought back a grin.
"You're a nut," she chuckled, reaching out and pulling open the door that led to the gym floor.
"You're a nut!"
"Ok, I'm tired of this game already," JJ laughed, shaking her head as she steered Bailey-Rose across the vaulting tracks towards where Nick and Teagan were coaching on the floor. Bailey-Rose giggled, falling into step beside JJ as they headed over to the group. Even amongst all the noise in the gym, Nick seemed to have heard the two additional voices joining the space, turning his head and breaking into a smile when he saw who was approaching.
"Ah, here comes trouble!" he said in a teasing voice. "And B-Rose, you're back!"
Bailey-Rose giggled, looking up at JJ. "You're trouble"
"You know I would flip you off right now if you weren't standing in front of twenty ten year olds," JJ said to Nick with a grin, earning a laugh from Teagan as she walked between the rows of kids stretching on the floor. He laughed, leaning forward to rest his elbows against a foam block.
"I know"
"JJ!"
Turning at the happy shriek, JJ had barely a second to recognise the person rushing towards her as Kate before a flurry of arms was thrown around her. She laughed, stumbling back slightly, giving the fifteen year old a tight squeeze, before pulling back and looking at the young girl in surprise.
"Since when have you had pink streaks in your hair?"
"Since I went over to Clem's house last week and we were messing around with a box of hair dye," Kate said cheekily. "I miss you! When are you coming back?"
JJ turned to Nick, raising an eyebrow. "Notice how she said 'when', Nick? What have you been saying to her?"
Kate laughed. "That you'll only retire when you're dead"
At that, Nick simply nodded, grinning from ear to ear as Teagan snorted and turned away to direct the group of younger kids through their next stretch.
"JJ said she might do Worlds again!" Bailey-Rose piped up. "Even Uncle Will said it!"
"See?" Nick chuckled, pointing at the eight year old. "She knows what's up. Just admit it. You're a sucker for punishment"
"She's a sucker for gold medals," Kate shot back, earning a triumphant nod from JJ.
"That's more like it," JJ said with a laugh. "But enough about me. B-Rose wanted to bring you guys some treats, and she's been hanging off my arm all morning to do some gymnastics-"
"Say no more!" Nick exclaimed, straightening up. "These little ones are almost done and then it's just me and Kate for the next two hours while Teagan takes the rec class. How do you feel about having an extra, Kate?"
"Yeah! Can I have a brownie though?" Kate asked.
"Have as many as you like," Nick laughed, before turning away to help Teagan wrap up the class.
"Have one now and more later, otherwise you'll barf," JJ chuckled, helping Bailey-Rose to pull the lid off the container the brownies were in. "Why is he so chipper today?"
"No idea," Kate replied, opening her mouth and shovelling an entire brownie into it. "Oh, thethe are tho good, thankth!"
JJ laughed. "Close your mouth, you look like a cement mixer"
Swallowing her mouthful, Kate grinned. "And you've had an eight year old for one night and you already sound like my mother"
Feigning shock, JJ swatted the teenager's shoulder, laughing as the three of them began to head over to the pit. A few minutes later, Nick was in their ranks, joining JJ on her perch atop a foam block as Kate and Bailey-Rose took turns bouncing from the trampoline into the pit.
"So," Nick said, a small smile on his face. "What's really going on? You seem on the fence about retirement"
"I... yeah," JJ admitted lamely, not even having the energy to try and lie. "I don't know, I just... I don't feel like I'm done"
Nick chuckled. "That's fine, JJ. You don't have to be done if you don't want to be"
"But I told everyone I was retiring. I was adamant"
"When did that stop Chusovitina? Komova?"
"I know," JJ sighed. "I'm just so conflicted. As soon as I tore my Achilles, I felt like I wasn't done. That I've got unfinished business. Although I have no idea what the hell the unfinished business is because I've exceeded every expectation I've ever put on myself. But I'm also... scared. That I might come back and hurt myself again"
"That didn't stop you after the shoulder. Or the leg," Nick offered gently.
"Yeah, but I'm not getting any younger," JJ replied. Nick chuckled.
"You're twenty three, JJ. You're acting like you're some geriatric already"
"But in gymnastics, I basically am"
"No you're not," Nick replied firmly. "I hate the stereotype that's been forced on this sport, that to be successful, gymnasts should be young, tiny, ballerina type athletes. You're twenty three, JJ, and you are the best in the world at what you do. You have been for two years. And if you want to keep going for no reason other than you damn well want to, well then, who cares? You do what makes you happy"
JJ smirked, leaning back on her hands as she watched Bailey-Rose do an easy front tuck to land in the pit. "Will said pretty much the same thing"
"Because the only person who has reservations about potentially coming back, JJ, is you," Nick said with a small smile. "And I don't know why, because from the sounds of it, your reservations are mainly just you trying to talk yourself out of it. But at the same time.. you sound like you want to do it. So why are you holding yourself back?"
Sighing, JJ allowed a short silence to fall between them as she contemplated Nick's words. "I honestly have no idea"
Nick laughed. "Well… I think that makes your decision for you, don't you think?"
Grinning sheepishly, JJ nodded. "I guess so"
"We can start off easy. Work up your strength and see how much we have to do after that tendon is healed. And then you can always decide down the track if you want to keep pushing at it"
"Will suggested taking a year off and coming back next year, but honestly… the thought of coming back after a year out is kind of terrifying. My body is just so used to the constant work, I think I would die"
Nick grinned.
"And add to that, I don't want to go back to the Olympics, so what's the point in competing in the pre-Olympic worlds and then retiring?"
Nick shrugged. "Like I said, JJ… you do what you want. If you want to retire right after the pre-Olympic worlds, that's completely your call"
"Well… I think I like what you suggested. Working in slowly and then seeing if it's worth the push to go to worlds this year"
"We can absolutely do that, JJ," Nick said warmly, leaning back so he was resting on his elbows.
"On another note… why are you so chipper today?" JJ asked, turning back to look at him as he got comfortable on the block. There was a moment's silence where Nick debated with his response, before he broke into a soft smile.
"Tash is pregnant again. We found out this morning"
JJ broke into a huge smile, her entire face lighting up. "Really?"
Nick nodded, his smile growing bigger by the second. "Yeah… we think she's pretty early on, so she doesn't want to tell people yet, but… I feel like I'm going to explode JJ. I'm gonna have another kid!"
JJ laughed, leaning over and giving her coach a quick squeeze. "I promise I won't say a word. I'm so excited for you! That's amazing news"
"Thanks JJ. We're pretty excited. A little overwhelmed, because Olivia is barely a year old, but it's gonna be great"
"JJ! JJ, watch this!" Bailey-Rose called from the trampoline, grabbing the attention of the two adults. "Look!"
"I'm watching!" JJ called back with a smile. Bailey-Rose turned to face the pit, working up a big bounce before launching herself up into what JJ guessed was an attempt at a double front, but was more like a front tuck to faceplant in the pit. She landed with a whumf, immediately breaking into hysterical giggles that were muffled by the foam as JJ, Nick and Kate all started to laugh with her.
"That was awesome B-Rose," Kate giggled, walking onto the trampoline and leaning over the edge to help Bailey-Rose out of the foam.
"Olympic material for sure," Nick called with a grin. The eight year old finally popped up, a grin spreading from ear to ear as she clambered out of the pit and ran over to the two adults, shaking foam dust from her hair as she went.
"I wasn't s'posed to do that," she said with a giggle, flopping against JJ's legs. JJ laughed, brushing some more foam residue from the young girl's face.
"I gathered as much," she chuckled. "But it was a good attempt! It's good that you're not scared to have a go at big things"
"Alright Kate, let's see this triple twist," Nick called out to his athlete. "Got to whip you into shape so you can beat JJ when she comes back, force her into retirement for good"
JJ scoffed as Kate laughed. "Thanks"
With Bailey-Rose in bed, the nightly routine came about like they were on autopilot. While JJ gave the guest bathroom a quick tidy, Will loaded the dishwasher and cleaned the kitchen. It was almost as if rehearsed, to the point that when JJ walked down the hallway towards their bedroom, Will was already a few steps ahead of her. He stepped aside as she walked into the room, allowing her in first with a smile before closing the door behind them.
"So what's on the agenda tomorrow?" he asked as he walked over to the bed, where JJ was plugging in her phone on the nightstand.
"Not too sure," JJ replied softly. "My mom said something about meeting for lunch, and then I thought we could take B-Rose to the aquarium. What time are you on tomorrow?"
"Well, I actually changed shifts with one of the guys. So I have tomorrow off," Will said with a smile, making JJ's face light up.
"Oh that's awesome! B-Rose will love that, she's been itching to hang out with you for a day," JJ chuckled.
"You mean she actually realises I'm here? And it's not just your house?" Will replied with a teasing grin, making JJ laugh as she pulled her sweater over her head and began to walk towards the bathroom. She was stopped in her tracks by Will reaching out and gently putting his hand on her arm. "Where are you goin'? I was hopin' to spend some time with you tonight"
Looking up at him, JJ met his bright blue eyes, the expression on his face making her feel as though she was suddenly being basked in warm sunlight. "Well, I was going to take a shower… you're more than welcome to join me"
Will couldn't help the cheeky smirk that crossed his face, making JJ giggle as she took his hand and tugged him towards the bathroom.
A little while later, they were both under the covers, the room in quiet darkness as they settled down for the night. Will was cuddled up to JJ's side, one hand draped over her stomach and tracing gentle circles on her hip bone. They had had their fun in the shower, but now, it was just about being. Cuddled together, enjoying and savoring each other's company. JJ had her face tipped towards the window, watching the cracks of light trying to find their way around the curtains. She could feel Will's breath against her neck, steady and constant as they lay there together.
"What are you thinkin' about?" Will asked after they had been laying like that for close to half an hour.
"Us," JJ said softly, turning her head so she was looking at her fiance. She gave him a soft smile, her eyes twinkling even in the low light of the room. "I can't believe how far we've come… we've had some serious obstacles along the way, but we did it"
Will chuckled, lifting his head and pressing a kiss to the tip of her nose. "We sure did. I'm the luckiest guy on earth"
JJ blushed. "I don't know why you keep saying that-"
"Because it's goddamn true," Will cut in indignantly, making JJ laugh before he tucked his head down and pressed another kiss to her collarbone. "I love you. And I love our life together. I'm so excited to see where it takes us"
"Only three months and you're stuck with me for good," JJ teased.
"Shackle me up," Will replied, lifting his head and finally pressing a kiss to her lips as she giggled. "I'm ready for life with no parole"
"You're such a dork," JJ giggled, bringing a hand to his cheek and reciprocating his sweet touches with another kiss. "But you're my favourite dork. And I can't wait to marry you"
"While I think of it, where are we goin' on our honeymoon?" Will asked, suddenly switching track. JJ smirked.
"You gave me free reign over that, and so I'm not telling you," she said teasingly.
"You can't not tell me," Will laughed.
"Yeah I can"
"How am I supposed to pack?"
"I think your exact request was 'make it somewhere you have to be in a bikini all the time', and so me being the amazing future wife that I am, have granted you that request. You should be able to pack just fine with that information," JJ replied with a grin.
"You're killin' me," Will groaned, dropping his head to her shoulder.
"I promise you'll love it. I just… I want to surprise you," JJ giggled. "Besides, I let you have full control over the flower arrangements, since I wasn't expecting you to have as much of an opinion about flowers as you did"
"I didn't like the lilies!" Will protested, earning more laughter out of JJ which only served to prolong the look of amusement on his face.
"So you told me, multiple times," JJ laughed, only for Will to grab her around the middle, making her squeal as he rolled onto his back and pulled her with him. The squeal faded into laughter as she looked down into his cheeky grin, just moments before she dropped her lips to his in a deep kiss. They stayed locked together for a little longer this time, a little more passion and heat behind the gesture, but when they broke apart, their eyes still twinkled with the same innocent, loving spark they had always had for each other.
"I love you," JJ said softly, cupping Will's cheek. "So much"
Will's lips quirked into a handsome smile as he carefully rolled back until they were laying side by side. "I love you too babe," he replied, stretching forward and pressing another quick kiss to the tip of her nose, then another to her cheek. "Come on… we better get some sleep"
