A/n: All right, I'm hooked. I can't stop writing this story. But if no one's gonna read it, I'll stop. No more after this until I get a few more reviews, Ok?
Chapter Four: Of Surprises and Awkward Meetings
*Skysong's Book of Shadows*
"Merry meet.
The coven did wonderful last night, and up until the end even Jaide's energy was pure, though she didn't fully do the full moon ritual. Does she do things like that on spur of the moment? Also, both Whitney and Adam are extremely talented. Adam hit it off with the runes right away, while Whit…She's very enthusiastic, and very eager to learn. She felt the energy better than even Will after the full moon ritual, and this causes me to believe that she has extraordinary talent. But all thoughts are in theory.
Today the most amazing, scary thing happened. I went to Practical Magick and met one of the most amazing people. I couldn't breathe, for I could sense her power so strongly… Dragon's was meager compared to it. I can't fit all into words of the details, but I shall tell you more of this day…
The day I met Morgan.
~Skysong"
Aurelia awoke the next morning with the sun shining brightly through her window and her mother folding clothes by her dresser.
"Jesus Mom, what time is it?" said Aurelia, sitting up and rubbing her eyes.
"Aurelia, watch your language," said her mother, folding a red shirt. "And it's nine o'clock."
"Nine-! Oh my god, I am so late…" She started to scramble out of bed, but her mother kept talking.
"You don't have school today, sweetheart. And I'm taking the day off."
"What?" Aurelia was halfway through shoving her legs into a pair of pants. "What do you mean we don't have school?"
"Power's out again. That building is falling apart, I tell you. It's older than your father, for Christ's sake."
"Marian, watch your language," laughed Aurelia, climbing back into bed. "Wake me in an hour, will you?"
"I will," said Marian, tucking her wispy brown hair out of her hazel eyes. "And we you wake up, you can help me clean."
"Lovely," said Aurelia as her mother left the room. "More work, even on a day off." And she soon drifted back off.
***
When she awoke next, the house was quiet. She got up, looked around her woodsy room, and shook her head wearily. Though she had been quite awake the hour before, that hour's sleep had reclaimed her. She threw on the pair of jeans she had used earlier, and then put on a white chenille sweater. After throwing her hair up into a ponytail, she went downstairs to find her mother.
"Mom? Hey mom, where are you?" She checked the office and the den. "Um… mom?" When she entered the dining room she found a note on the table next to a twenty dollar bill. It read:
"Dear Aurelia,
I had a few errands to run at the clinic. On my way home I'll be stopping at the grocery store, so I won't be home for at least a couple hours. I may be gone until dinnertime, so get the lasagna out of the freezer for me. If you decide to go anywhere just remember to do the dishes first.
Love, Mom
P.S.: I know you like to order pizza's on your days off, so I left you $20 for lunch.
Have fun honey!"
"Well, said Aurelia. "That was nice." She stared at the note another minute, and then ran through the archway to the kitchen to do the dishes. 'Thank god for dishwashers,' she thought as she piled them into the contraption. She put in soap and hit the button for start, turning and running back upstairs for her wallet and her car keys. She grabbed the money her mom had left her as she ran out the front door. After all, she had never been hungry in the morning anyway, and the drive to Red Kill would be about forty-five minutes.
***
The drive through the back roads was peaceful; the sounds and sights of springtime greeted her as she drove. She smiled as a hawk screamed overhead, and she turned her vision to it as she drove down the back roads. It soared high overhead, wheeling and turning against a bright sky. She greeted her favorite animal with a wave of her hand and turned onto the road leading straight into Red Kill.
She found a parking spot close by and exited her car, slipping her money into her back pocket. She walked up the side walked and entered the little shop, blinking at the change in light. She headed straight to the books section, running her hands over the beautiful books.
An older woman passed by carrying an armful of books. She was very wobbly and looked as if she was going to fall. Aurelia giggled as she saw her. "Here, Alyce. Let me help you with that." She walked over and took a few.
Alyce looked up and smiled. "Why, hello there. Aurelia Dawson, it has been a long time since you walked through that door. Where in the name of the mother have you been?" She walked over to the section book section labeled "Solitary" and sat the books down on the floor and started filing them.
Aurelia sat hers down next to Alyce's, and sat on the floor next to her. "I'm really, really sorry. I know I haven't been around since February, but I was really busy with schoolwork and the coven."
"Oh? And how is Nightwalker, anyway?" Alyce asked with interest.
"Oh, okay, I guess." She sat next to Alyce and read titles of books on Scrying. "We'll be getting new members on Beltane."
"That's wonderful, Aurelia!" She smiled at the much younger girl. "You've done a wonderful job as a leader. You know that, don't you?"
"I try," Aurelia shrugged. "Jaide still begs to differ."
"Oh, Jaide doesn't mean it. She just wants things done right. She doesn't think you're old enough, that's all."
"Yeah, but it keeps messing up the energy in the coven. She keeps bringing anger and insecurity to the circles."
"She'll get over it." Alyce seemed a bit sidetracked as she put the books in their rightful positions. "So what about you? Are all your ailments healed?"
"Oh, you mean my nightmares?" Aurelia shrugged. "No, but I finally found some help."
Alyce gave her a look. "I would have helped you."
"Yeah, but…" Aurelia just gave her a small smile of apology. Suddenly a thought clicked. "Do you know my history teacher? He's a blood witch."
"Who?" Alyce looked up, interested.
"Um… Evan Wood?" she named hopefully, flicking a piece of hair out of her face.
"Goddess, yes. I've known him since he was your age… a little younger, more probably. He's only seven or eight years older than you. Has he finally grown into his looks? I haven't seen the boy in years."
Aurelia didn't know what to say. "Um… he's my teacher. I don't usually think like that about teachers."
Alyce laughed. "Well, you go back to your shopping. By the way, stones and candles are on sale right now. We have a new supply of moonstones, if you'd like to look. They're in the wooden case."
Aurelia smiled. "Thanks." She walked toward the stones and Alyce began working on the books again.
***
"By the way Father, I finally found some interested students." Dragon sipped his beer and looked at Padriac, who was sipping his own nearby.
He looked up, ruddy face mildly interested. "Really? How many?"
Dragon leaned in, as if telling a good joke. "Well, actually, there's a coven inside the school."
"Just what we need. More children playing with magick." The man tipped up his mug.
"No, you underestimate them. As far as I can tell they do things right. Their leader is really intelligent for one so young." He smiled.
"You know him?"
"Not him. Her. She's the strongest of the group, not to mention the youngest of the existing coven. She's a student of mine. Her name's Aurelia Dawson, and I'm working with her every day in the last hour of school. She really knows what she's doing, and leads a coven of five to even seven people. I'm impressed." He smiled.
The older man perked up at the sound of her name. "Dawson?" he said slowly. "That's a fairly common name…"
Dragon shrugged. "Not really." He took a drink. "So, you want me to take you home?"
"Yes, I think I'd like that." He sipped his beer. "You will keep me updated on your student wonders, won't you?"
Dragon blinked, a little surprised. "Of course Father. If you want me to."
Intelligent black eyes stared off into the distance, a plan forming behind them. "Oh, I do. I do."
***
"I'll take these ones, Alyce."
Alyce looked over her purchases and nodded. "Good choices. You need the amethyst for…?"
"Calmness. Piece of mind. Lily's been thinking of her mother again lately. They're for her, not me." Aurelia looked apologetic.
"Oh really? Poor girl. Send her my love. Oh, and um, tell William that the book he ordered finally arrived."
Aurelia swiped a piece of hair behind her ear and nodded. "I will." She opened her mouth to ask her about the nightmares, but Alyce was already turned around and walking toward the door. A bell tinkled just then and someone entered Alyce rushed over to greet them like a beloved relative. Aurelia's eyes lingered on the spot where Alyce had been standing. Suddenly a pair of shoes blocked her vision, and she looked up into brown eyes. A hand was offered and Aurelia slowly shook it. Alyce walked over and smiled. "After all this time…finally. I always wanted you two to meet."
Aurelia glanced over the striking girl who faced her, and her breath caught in her throat. Power radiated from her like light from the sun. Aurelia opened her mouth to speak, but only air came out.
Alyce smiled at them both. "Introductions? Aurelia Dawson, I would like you to meet Morgan…" She looked at the girl for the answer.
"Rowlands, Alyce. It's nice to meet you, Aurelia."
Aurelia finally drew in air and smiled. "No, Morgan, the pleasure's all mine."
