If it was anyone else, they would be unprepared for Damon's blurring and it was only years of experience and honing his skills and senses in the Purgatory that allowed Dean to anticipate it and he dodged before grabbing Damon by his arm and headbutting him and pushing him back.
"Hey, guys, stop!" Stefan yelled.
"We don't have time for this!" Sam shouted.
"Don't. There's no going back now." Cass said as he stepped up.
Dean and Damon were exchanging blows before Damon managed to land a punch at Dean's face as he staggered back but Dean blocked the following punch and headbutted Damon, dazing him before Dean kneed him in the groin, causing for Damon to double over. Dean then grabbed Damon in neck lock and kneed him again repeatedly before elbowing him in the back but Damon shook Dean off and tried to punch him, when Dean stabbed him in the hand with the demon-killing knife and Damon groaned. Dean then grabbed Damon by his arm, broke it and threw him away as Damon rolled on the ground.
"That's enough, come on!" Bonnie yelled but neither one of them listened.
"Both of you, stop it!" Alaric shouted.
Damon got up, cracking his arm into its previous angle and with a roar rushed at Dean, tackling him, or at least attempting to as Dean's feet were buried in the ground and sliding back by inches but Damon elbowed Dean in the chin, dazing him and Damon grabbed Dean by his throat, intending to end it by snapping his neck but Dean slammed his fists on Damon's head like if he was banging drums, dazing him before Dean pried Damon's hands away from his neck before Dean threw a barrage of punches at Damon but Damon recovered and blocked before he grabbed Dean by his hands and blurred with him to a nearby car, denting it and shattering the window upon impact as Dean grunted and coughed, the wind knocked out of him.
Before Damon could plunge his hand into Dean's chest and rip his heart out, Dean kicked Damon in the leg, causing for Damon to stumble. Dean blocked and dodged Damon's punches before striking him in the ribs and then delivering a right hook in his face and they exchanged few blows before Dean grabbed Damon by his arm and threw Damon down on the ground. Damon attempted to get up but Dean rushed at him with a roar and tackled him to the ground but before Dean could throw another punch, Damon shook him off as they got up and Damon scratched Dean across his face as Dean stumbled back. Damon picked a rebar and attempted to impale Dean who dodged and grabbed the rebar and plunged it into Damon's heart and pinned him to a pile of junk.
"Not wooden." Damon smirked.
"I know." Dean smirked back and Damon screamed as Dean pulled the rebar out and stabbed him in the hip with the demon-killing knife. "But it doesn't mean it doesn't hurt like a bitch."
Damon snarled in rage but Dean headbutted him, dazing him. Dean grabbed Damon and headbutted him again before kicking him in the chest as Damon staggered.
"Hey, enough!" Stefan stepped up in front of Dean.
Noticing Damon, Dean shoved Stefan aside as Damon tried to blur at Dean and stopped his hand inches away from Dean's chest before Damon could rip his heart out. Dean twisted Damon's wrist as bones cracked before Dean hit Damon in the face. They grabbed each other, trying to push the other one but Damon gained the upper hand due to his vampire strength and tackled Dean down and pummeled him before Dean grabbed Damon by his hand and clawed a handful of dirt from the ground and threw it at Damon's eyes, blinding him, which was all Dean needed as he shoved Damon down and pulled out his knife.
Dean and Benny were in Purgatory fighting monsters before Dean pinned one of the monsters down and raised his blade, about to finish it off with a bloodthirsty glare in his eyes.
As Damon recovered, he saw Dean glaring down at him hatefully as Dean let out a roar of rage as he raised the knife with the sharp edge of the blade against Damon's neck and brought the knife down onto Damon, about to cut his head off.
"Stop!" Bonnie cried.
Stefan blurred to Dean and grabbed his wrist with the knife, which, much to his surprise was inches apart from Damon's head, who stared back with utter shock before Dean pinned him down.
Dean looked up at Stefan and Bonnie before looking down at Damon with a profound look into his eyes. "You can blame everyone but yourself for what's gone wrong in your life, but in the end, you are responsible for your own choices. Not your brother. Not Katherine. They may have turned you, but you being a jackass, you lashing out, you hurting those who try to care about you, try to reach you, that's all your choice! Bonnie and Stefan and Elena and Jeremy would help you and reach you and how do you repay them? By hurting those they love, whenever things don't go your way? You still think that's because you're the monster Katherine made? No, that's all on you, whether you turn your humanity on or off, but they won't give up on you, Stefan and Bonnie and Elena wouldn't because they still believe in you and if you keep being such a dick, at the end, you'll lose them all forever. Family has your back even when it hurts, through good, bad, all of it. You can fight back and being a dick, but if you do, in the end, you'll be the monster you blame everyone for turning you into. You might have eternal life and all the strength but it's nothing without anyone by your side and why do you think they'd turn their backs on you? You can shut it off and kill me but that'll only prove me right. There's dozens of reasons I ought to use that to cut your head off. And right now, the only reason I didn't do it is in front of me." He finished as he looked up at Bonnie and Stefan.
The words seemed to dent the tough exterior Damon was putting on as he just stared, too shocked, beaten and speechless to retort with any witty or snarky comment, while he looked up at Stefan and Bonnie who looked down at him sadly and in sympathy, while Dean got up, staggering on his feet as he limped to them.
"You OK?" Sam asked.
"I've been worse." Dean assured.
"Here." Cass said, touching Dean's forehead and an instant later, Dean's injuries were healed as Dean breathed in relief.
"Thanks, Cass." Dean said before they turned to Damon who was getting up but he didn't seem humiliated or enraged, he just seemed… contemplating as Stefan and Bonnie looked at him sadly and Dean, while still angry, felt some small sympathies for him.
Damon stared in front of him as he sat down, the words Dean had said affecting him as Alaric, Stefan and Bonnie walked to him.
"So… go ahead. Mock me. Laugh at me. Beaten by a human hunter. You must be so proud, Ric." Damon said.
"Honestly… I'm just sad." Alaric said, surprising Damon.
"We just wanna be sure that you've calmed down. You do realize you've brought this on yourself, right? It didn't have to be this way." Stefan said.
"And to be fair, you had it coming." Bonnie said and Damon couldn't really deny their points.
"I know." Damon said honestly, surprising them. "I was a jackass."
"Do you mean a specific moment or do you mean in general?" Bonnie asked sarcastically.
"I think that there are too many moments to count for being specific." Damon said as they chuckled. "But… what he said… I realized he was right." He admitted, silencing them. "I wanted to kill him. I could've. But if I did…" He turned to them. "I'd be the monster I've always blamed you for turning me into, especially when…" He swallowed, looking ashamed. "When you'd do anything to come through for me, when I haven't done it enough for you."
Stefan, Bonnie and Alaric felt both shocked and touched that Damon would admit he was in the wrong and that he appreciated their help.
"But we got a second chance when we got out, Bon." Damon said, turning to Bonnie. "I thought we were in Hell together but we got out and you're using it to do better and now it's making me realize I haven't done enough. I want to but…" He looked down, ashamed. "I'm trying to change." He laughed humorlessly. "I've wanted to change since Elena and even more since…" He gave Stefan and Bonnie a bittersweet smile. "But I guess it's the one struggle that I'll carry with me forever, if not with you, brother."
"Maybe. But you think that even though you might live forever, you'll be alone and you'll lose me and Elena one day and that's what scares you, whether we're vampires or not." Stefan said.
"Maybe it's not an easy road for you to be better… but you don't have to do it alone. You never had to. You just have to have it in you to let people reach you. If you keep pushing everyone away and lashing out instead of letting them help you, then you are lost forever, Damon." Bonnie said as she held Damon's shoulder as Damon considered.
Dean finished cleaning up his clothes as he put on his jacket.
"You OK?" Sam asked.
"As well as I can be." Dean said.
"That's not what I meant, Dean." Sam said as Dean turned to him. "Look, I'm not denying that Damon had it coming but… that rage… that bloodlust…"
"I know." Dean nodded as he considered. "Honestly, Damon and Stefan scare me. Not that I'm afraid of them but…"
"Kind of like looking into a freaky mirror." Sam said and Dean nodded.
"That's one way to put it. They do care about each other and seem to try to be good but mainly for Damon it's much easier to do his worst, when he has a chance to do his best. It just makes me wonder what if this was us." Dean said.
"What, you think we'd make each other miserable for turning into vampires?" Sam asked.
"God knows we've pulled some nasty stuff at the other." Dean said.
"Never to make each other suffer, only to help each other and yeah, I know it has backfired before but we're nothing like them, Dean. If we were demons or if we lost our souls, maybe, but what separates us from them is that no matter what, at the end of the day we stand by each other. Stefan does stand by Damon but for Damon, while I guess he does try, he's the one doing his worst when he can do his best. And yeah, maybe we shouldn't have to give up on him, but do you really see us in them? You remember what Bobby and Dad used to say?" Sam asked and Dean nodded.
'Family don't end in blood, but it doesn't start there either. Family cares about you, not what you can do for them. Family's there, through the good, bad, all of it. They got your back even when it hurts. That's family.'
Dean and Sam walked out, when they met Damon, Stefan, Bonnie and Alaric and Dean neared Damon. "You calmed down or you want a next round?"
"I think I'll save it for next time." Damon said as they chuckled. "Though… I guess I had that coming anyway."
"So, now that we've calmed down, any ideas?" Alaric asked.
"Well, we know where they are, so I think we'll need backup." Dean said.
So, I hope you enjoyed Dean vs. Damon, some of the parts are inspired by Aragorn II Elessar's 'A Devil in the City of Angels' with Matt Murdock (Daredevil) vs. Angel and 'Champion vs. Bad boy' with Damon vs. Angel. Damon may have the strength and speed of a vampire but Dean has taken on stronger foes than him.
The next chapter is going to finish the whole ordeal with Kai, though there will be some loose ends to deal with and some things you might not expect.
