HHH
Not many people were asked to host the minister of magic for tea but it was something that was comforting to Harry. Kingsley had been good to Sirius while he got sicker and so she had spent a fair bit of time with the man during school breaks the previous year and considered him a friend, so she was happy to speak to him outside his office and in a more comfortable setting. They had not had the opportunity to really talk since he had asked her to take part in the rebirth project. It felt like forever ago, not just a couple weeks.
"So, Dumbledore and The Weasleys aren't happy with me, how about you," Kingsley asked when Harry poured the minister some tea.
She also appreciated his bluntness. "You've been hearing their bitching then," Harry asked. Kingsley wasn't like a lot of the other order of the phoenix members. He did it because it was the right thing, not because he was enchanted with the same ideals that Dumbledore could do no wrong. Apparently, he had not asked Dumbledore's opinions on things which wasn't a surprise.
He gave a chuckle. "I must say, Molly's howlers are quite an experience."
A part of Harry was horrified. She might have had no respect for the ministers of magic in the past, but Kingsley was still minister. You don't just send Howlers to someone of his position. "She really…"
"Hmm, yes. Luckily my mail is watched as minister, so I only heard it in private and muffled. I must admit to feeling bad for Fred and George, they I'm sure had hundreds of those things. The order even watched her make one in the past but to receive one is quite a different feel."
"So was it the fact you approve of the program or me being involved that made her do something as ridiculous as sending the friggen minister of magic a bloody howler."
"The second of course," he said not even bothered. "So, I'm guessing she had a lot to say about you taking in the reborn."
Harry scoffed. "Everyone seems to have a lot to say about me taking them in," Harry returned getting a cringe in response. "I've stopped opening the letters. Because its bloody awful."
Kingsley felt guilty on that. He was the one who brought it to her attention. Even knowing the fact, she would likely face ridicule over it didn't stop him. While he stood by the fact this program was the right call, it was still unsettling to have so badly messed up the girl he cared so much abouts life. "What do you think of it," He questioned. "How's it going with the adoption." That was the best word for it.
How to find the words. It was overwhelming, terrifying, it made people angry at her, possibly ruined the friendships that she had since she was eleven but not one part of that was her answer. "I will never be able to thank you enough," Harry admitted surprising him. It was the truth though. What Fred and George had said was the truth. She was happy and experiencing life in a different way. Maybe not the right way but it as something that she would never give up if she had another choice. "This was the best things ever done Kingsley."
He was silent for a moment hardly able to understand what he just heard. "I'm glad for that Harry but I have to admit, that was not the reaction I expected."
Harry got up from the couch. "Let me show you something." Showing him was much much easier then explaining.
He followed her and she pointed to a dozen pictures on the wall. The ones they had given her the day following the bathtub disaster had grown in number, now all the kids had made Harry presents and cards. Each one unique. "They made me those."
"Artsy."
True enough. They had a fair bit of talent for their ages but that wasn't what she was showing him. "Because they want to make me happy," Harry said wanting him to understand. She knew not everyone would get it, understand it in the way she did but she felt like he who started all this deserved to understand. "Because I was sad when I found out the abuse they suffered as children, the extent of it made me near sick and they didn't want me to be sad, so they drew me those. That's...not the actions of a future death eater but of an innocent child with the world at the palms of his hands. I'm happy Kingsley. I'm really happy. Being like their mother...I know it's only been three weeks, but I think I already love them. They are amazing. Seeing them flourish and grow even in a short time. These kids are amazing King. Like you don't even get it. They are so good."
"That's wonderful," Kingsley said surprised.
"I could tell you a thousand things," Harry said. "How exhausting raising kids is, how frightening it is. How overwhelming. I'm not saying it's perfect but it's worth it. And these kids, they've done more to make sure that I was okay, then most people have my entire life. Just because I was sad. I know abuse, dark magic, the dark mark, brainwashing turned them into monsters and even Sirius wasn't completely separate from that. But right now, they aren't evil. They are so good. So easy to love. So innocent. They could do anything with their lives. So much good. Because they care about people. They see someone upset and try to fix it. The rebirth programs good Kingsley. So good. It has so much potential. I don't know how the others are making out, but I think that it's worth it."
He was pleased as he looked over the drawings. "I'm glad Harry. I never wanted to cause you more trouble but there truly wasn't another choice. I'm glad that it is not bad."
"I know," she said. "I don't know how to be a mum. But I figure that I can't be as awful as their parents were so at least there is a chance thing are going to be better."
He looked at the pictures and could see multiple of them had a dark-haired girl with glasses, so he assumed already that they were attached to her. The two returned to the tea sitting down. "But I'm sure you've not just come here to talk about the howler and how the kids are doing," Harry returned. "And as minister you are probably far too busy for easy going social calls."
He chuckled. "Gryffindors are always blunt and to the point."
"Makes life simpler," She returned without hesitation. "So what's going on? I've been avoiding newspapers."
Considering the absolute nonsense, they usually spewed about her, he wasn't surprised. "Overall people aren't sure which side they take over the rebirth ritual being used," Kingsley admitted. "Some people are very much accepting of it, others think that giving them a second chance is wrong, some are worried about how it can be exploited and others still thinking of ways to exploit it."
Of course, that was the case. She wasn't even surprised. "Well, that was expected," she said. "How many have been turned?"
"32 people as of now," he said seriously. "All of whom either had a dementors kiss sentence or cases where the person was dying through ministry mistakes, or through curse damage caused by the war."
"So, Death Eaters, Sirius and the Longbottom's," she said shortening it.
"I really wish to say that Frank and Alice Longbottom were the only ones who have been de-aged due to extreme cruciotus damage, but that would be a lie," Kingsley returned. "It's only been a few weeks since the first batch went through the ritual, so we have only put out a couple statements. More will be understanding hopefully but it probably will never be fully accepted."
No, changing them was the easy part. Now it was a matter of insuring people did not treat them as if they were the murderers they had been. Harry was worried that people would attack the kids over crimes the elders committed but all she could do was protect them.
"Nothing we can do now. We all made a choice," Harry said. "It was the right one and its already done."
"Your right," He agreed nodding before getting to the biggest point of why he had requested a meeting with her. "I'm glad your approving of the program and not upset about what I've asked of you. Especially, because I have a favor, I need from you."
Of course, he had a favor of her. Last time he mentioned a favor in any form, she became a parent to four kids at sixteen so this could hardly be a good thing. "Oh bugger," Harry said glancing to the kitchen, "If you weren't minister, I'd pull out the fire whiskey for that. What's going on?"
He chuckled. "I wouldn't complain about a good drink, but you are still underage."
She raised an eyebrow at him. Really, he was complaining about that? It was barmy to be complaining about her having a drink seeing as everything else that was going on. "Really, my age is now something that worries you?" She challenged.
"No but as a responsible adult I should at least state that fact," he returned. Considering she had fought in a war, ended a terrorist group and now was raising four children her being underage to drink was hardly an issue.
Instead of being upset he just laughed. ""Dumbledore wants a meeting, apparently you only told a few key people the floo address when you changed it up. Frankly, I'm grateful to have been included on that list."
"Your still running Dumbledore's messages minister," Harry asked judgingly. She didn't know what she thought about that considering he was one of the few who weren't afraid to admit Dumbledore was not right in the way he reacted to the war and was fairly useless in the fight.
"No but it's in regard to the rebirth program and your education so in this case, it's actually part of my duties to play messenger. I may be minister but I am also involved in the program so yes, I'm still forced to run his messages. It's not just about you, it's with all the 'new parents'."
"So, me and Neville?" As far as she knew that was it.
He cringed slightly. It was hard enough knowing they left children to raise children, but it sadly was not just the two of them. "Actually, there is five of Hogwarts age," he said surprising her.
With 32 rebirths, and her having four, Neville two. The fact that more than six children were now being raised by minors essentially was a horrifying thought. "Really, I mean, weren't there...well people out of Hogwarts." It might be hypocritical to ask but it seemed insane. Maybe she should have kept an eye on things instead of hiding away.
"The issue comes with these people being grown adults, most of the people left are their children or spouses, we found opposition to spouses taking custody of the children. In some cases, the spouse should likely be in azkaban, others they aren't stable or refused. So sadly, in more cases then expected that leaves children to be guardians."
"Okay so, I have four, Neville two though his and Sirius's are different circumstances. You said thirty-two people. So, is all the trials finished? That's the end of it right?"
"More people are choosing this path," he admitted.
Surely, she had heard wrong. Who would choose to relive their lives. How was that even allowed? "Reliving your entire life. And they are being allowed, I thought this was a last-ditch effort to change their futures and not have many families die out not a free for all regaining lost youth."
Kingsley quickly spoke seeing her get riled up. She was typically easy going but when she wasn't, even he could admit she was quite the fierce witch. "It very much is not going to be a free for all," Kingsley assured. "The plan is for each person to be screened by a panel."
"Panels can be bought." So could the ministry but she chose not to verbalize that last bit to the minister.
"No one sane wants to relive childhood, forget who they are and everything about themselves. It's a change instead of the dementors kiss, an option that doesn't involve soul sucking demons though some still die. Magic takes its tole but there were three other cruciotus victims whose relatives sought this alternative. Better than a life time in a vegetative state. At least they can live. We weren't even sure how well it would work in the beginning so as of now, no large decisions are being made and there is a temporary halt so no further individuals are being rebirthed until a more clear panel is made."
"Who decides," Harry asked.
"Currently, the entire wizenmagot. Each person involved is selected by a majority vote of the wizenmagot. You've not been to any meetings yet because your not yet fifteen but it so far is just involving the trials. People who are selected to receive the dementors kiss are given this option instead. And the few cases of cruciotus exposure. As of now, it is halted, and we are building a panel as a few people are trying to get this to happen to them but due to age instead of necessity and we realized an issue so we are building a panel. If its requested due to age, its automatically declined. Only irreparable magic damage such as the cruciotus exposure, Dementor exposure and hardened criminals will be okayed."
"And can we keep this power from being misused," Harry questioned. The idea of groups like Death Eaters having the power to completely erase who someone is, made her ill. It could easily be misused. Something she had not considered but hearing that people seemed to actually want it was nauseating and brought up fears she had buried. Have an heir who disagrees with you like Sirius did his mother, rebirth him so that they can try again. So many opportunities for misuse.
"Considering six unspeakable and the minister hold the secrets to it, so far it is protected, and we believe completely safe," Kingsley said. "Each hold a different aspect, to be passed on to the next in line, its information destroyed. We have taken precautions. I know you have no trust in the ministry and that is deserved but trust me on that. Every precaution is being taken so that this isn't misused."
She didn't quite trust it even if she liked the man. "What if one of the unspeakables or you die? Is it lost?"
"There is fail safes," Kingsley returned. "I would never agree to it for me. Because it is not reliving your youth, its living it for the first time for you, taking away good chunks of who you were."
"And the favor you want is just me going to meet Dumbledore?"
The look on his face said no that wasn't just it. "Life's never that easy Harry. The favor is sadly multi-level."
"Just spit it out." She could feel a headache forming and really just wanted a clear answer.
"We want you and Mr. Longbottom, to be on the council for choices, 15 selected from the wizenmagot to make decisions. A clear process created for approving or disapproving of the program. Who gets custody. Whether or not there are other choices. You both are some of the early ones involved and hold lordships so are a very easy choice. I also know for a fact; you both are not corruptible and will not be bought off which adds one of those protections you want. I know it's a lot to ask but there are very few I can trust. You are raising three death eaters reborn, and one due to health. Mr. Longbottom is solely raising children based on health cause for rebirth, but it will give a strong perspective on the program. Someone with experience to have a voice."
That was a lot to ask. She knew nothing about being part of a committee like this. She was not even sure how to use her wizenmagot seat and was terrified for the day she had no choice but to step up. This sounded like an actual job. "I don't know," Harry admitted. She wanted to keep an eye on the program because some aspects of it did worry her but she wasn't sure if she could be that involved with anything ministry related either.
"Just come in, see the options, see what it involves. That's all I'm asking."
She nodded agreeing even if she wasn't sure if she could do it but she agreed anyways."Alright," Harry said. "I can agree to that."
"Thank merlin," he laughed, "And the meeting with Dumbledore and the other parents still in school will occur at the ministry in two days time."
"Maybe next time you visit, just visit," Harry suggested. "No more of this stuff."
"Hopefully, once things settle from the war, fighting, and the absolute disaster Fudge left the ministry I will take you up on that," He said easily. "Harry, I know we are asking a lot of you. An unforgivable amount especially with everything you already gave up." She didn't disagree with that. They were asking a lot. "But you are one of the few who can be trusted because you know both sides. And your one of the few who will speak up as well. I'm sorry to ask it."
"I understand," She returned.
