Bittersweet Victory
By Matthew Burns
Two weeks after the Battle of Alkali Lake
Scott Summers watched his rival from the window of Danger Room Control. Watched the silver claws slice through everything, watched burns and cuts heal in seconds. For two years the man had haunted his darkest fears, his nightmares of his love in the arms of another man. How many times had he watched her reading, knowing she hadn't turned a page in 5 minutes, wondering if she was thinking of the clawed maverick.
But really, how could she not? Wolverine was heroic, Scott was cautious. Wolverine was fun-loving, Scott was uptight. Wolverine was dangerous, Scott was safe. How could she not have thought of him?
He watched the claws slice again and again with furious anger. But she had chosen him. She had taken all that was Wolverine and turned it away. For Scott. For him. But then she had died, and now she was gone forever. The claws sliced once more. Bittersweet victory.
