In Shadow

Watching.

Guilt comes upon on us, lighting us up as a match to flame, igniting our souls, making known to all the who are in the room what we carry.

Memories of old reunite us with our buried fears, things we seemed to have forgotten, things of so many years ago, things better off left in shadow.

Waiting.

Excuses pour out, like rain from the oncoming storm, waiting to drown us in our lies. We glance at each other as if waiting to see what lay claim, what future we might yet have. Our eyes close at the oncoming light that warns and burns at our fate. He sees what no one can.

Wandering.

Pacing about, while the uncontrollable urge to spill our lives and all that has brought us pain rips at us. The odds are against us, and yet, we try and gamble what chance we have to live away.

Friendship turns to animosity as we plan for the future we may never have, the future without each other.

Betrayal offers more salvation than trust, 'maybe he did do it after all..'

Fading.

Eyes, like a storm, reach out and sacrifice. 'Dylan, no!' We silently scream, frozen to reality, chilled to the pain. His courage never waned, his title was fairly given. Captain.

Maybe some things are best left in shadow.

We saw the light in him fading, while the darkness around us left, nothing mattered anymore. Our scams and deals were all miniscule compared to the loss of someone so close, so dear. He had always given up something in order to keep us together, now he gave the most important thing of all, his life.

Anger stirred in our souls, boiling the water beneath us. We took one last shot at the enemy and prayed.

Gone.

He was finally defeated.

A light came from our Captain's eyes, 'Yes, our Captain.' He was alive. A new hope awoke within us, a will to leave this place.

We smiled, a secret smile that is only shared between friends, and that was when we all noticed, we were a crew again, a crew with a captain.

And he faded, falling into shadow…
