Ros looked at the large kitchen in front of her as she helped in delivering the meat pies and egg rolls which she had been tasked to do by Severus. She sure had come from a long way to wanting to become a whore to earn money for herself to become the infamous red haired spitfire of Wintertown called by Wintertown people or 'habanero' called by Severus during his talks with her. She didn't knew its meaning but then he had explained when he had shown her the seeds of the chilli plant. She prided in his given name afterall he had explained that it was perhaps one of the most hottest chilli present there. Where he got the seeds of the plant, she didn't knew but he had a wide variety of seeds which he had explained that he got from his father who had been a trader. Lord Stark had accepted the excuse afterall, afterall Severus did had large amount of seeds of plants and crops with him in his bags which surprisingly grew well in cold. He had explained that his father had toured all around the world gathering items before his arrival to North.
"Ros, it is good to see you again," Gage spoke up looking at the red haired girl infront of him who was delivering the egg rolls and the various dishes made for the Lords and Ladies.
Severus Snow was perhaps the best cook in the world in Gage's opinion, with his culinary and cooking skills out of this world. He made dishes which watered one's mouth with it's smell only, even Lord and Lady Stark ordered for some of his items which he sold personally like the cake, which he had prepared for the birthday of Lady Arya. There had been three big cakes and several small ones for the household members of Lord Stark which Gage had got to taste. It was delicious like anything he had ever eaten, he had an inkling that it was Lady Stark who had ordered it considering Lord Stark stern and hardly frugal nature. But he was glad to have tasted it, the boy was a genius, the likes of which Gage had never seen. 'The Snow of Wintertown' the people lovingly called him as they tasted his food or helped in his endeavours. Already the traffic in Wintertown was increasing and it was all just for the sake of food, it was incredibly mind boggling.
"Gage, any more orders for now?" She asked looking at him. The Harvest Feast was responsible for letting her not sleep properly for past two days, all the northern Lords were arriving so everything had to be perfect. Severus had sent her to sleep but she had returned back to not let her sleep cloud her duty. This was a big chance for them to gain favours from many nobles here and there.
"Oh some extra, more Northern Lords are arriving slowly," he replied with a sigh thinking of the headache he was already receiving due to the large amount of work coming to the kitchen.
"More!" Ros exclaimed, wide eyed at the request, even she could see that this was perhaps the most busiest Harvest Festival in years with the large amount of guests and even then people were still arriving. It was a good thing that Severus had planned carefully everything and every dish was being done separately by seperate people. Even Gage was going to present there after an hour or two, the only reason he was here was because of the lemon cakes he was making here. After that he will be there to help in the preparation of more items for the nobles. The food for the Lords afterall was prepared under the eyes of Stark guards and men, it was the custom for every Harvest festival. There could be no lax in the security afterall as the Lords of North were present here.
"Oh and we want a little more oil jars for the fried potatoes we are preparing," Gage asked as he looked at the jars filled with oil which will be empty after an hour or so. The fried potatoes and its chips were being eaten like weed by the people present here with the salt and a little chilli sprinkled over it. The idea given by Severus to do so as it will be like a snack to some people.
The children loved the chips and the Heirs and daughters of the Noble families were already demanding it more. Arya loved to eat them along with Lord Stark's baseborn son Jon Snow, Lady Sansa loved the cakes which Severus sold while Lord Robb loved the brown bread and the chicken Rolls and the egg rolls. The cakes filled with cream and sweetness alike and sold to everyone who could afford the low priced ones as well as the high priced ones. The only difference was in the cream and savouriness of it.
"Oil, aye got it," Ros said as she wrote the items in a small paper which she had been carrying.
Soybean and Peanut, two new type of plant introduced by Severus which could be eaten and from which oil could be produced too. The nearby fields were mainly filled with the Soybean and Peanut plants from which the oil was being extracted for the use of cooking.
The oil was mainly used for cooking purposes and was also sold to other people in Wintertown and Winterfell.
"Let's go Desmond," Ros said as she walked along with Desmond to their kitchen building where everything was being prepared and her boss was present to see over the preparations.
Severus counted disinterestedly the large number of prepared meat rolls as he sent them inside to the main area with the Stark guards and men. He was currently supervising his fellow men and cooks on the presentation and preparation of food.
It really helped to have a Noble backing you, Severus thought inwardly as he looked at the large amount of dumplings filled with chicken and vegetables. The dumplings were going to be cooked in steam and then some later fried on for serving. It was the food for the guests and the men alike in the Hall. Lord Stark had talked with him about the food and had requested him to make the food as nice as they could. Apparently he wanted to have the other Lords in a bright mood for some discussion.
He and Lord Stark had talked about some things personally and while he would lose some of the items in his arsenal, he would be not affected much in the whole. He didn't craved money and Land was already going to be given to him by Lord Stark.
They were preparing the food in a big courtyard near the smithy which was normally used for practise of new weapons. Since the smithy was closed as Mikken was fooling around with him, helping for the Welcoming Feast which will happen today. The Harvest Feast was yet to happen for next two days so they were not that busy today. There was a lot of fuss for preparing food for so many people but it was nothing compared to what they will face two days later.
He had already plans to introduce plain rice today, along with chicken gravy as well as meat gravy and potatoes. It would be there for almost everyone along with other type of normal food prepared by Gage and the chicken rolls and mear rolls from him. The chips and other items would also be present for the next two days.
He was going to give them plain rice today and then shift to some other dish of rice tomorrow. There were a large number of cups already for the rice pudding he had prepared, it was something he had perfected after the various trial and errors on his part. There were boiled eggs cooked with chilli and other spices in a thick gravy. He could already imagine that the feast was going to be something else today with the amount of dishes made. The rice had not travelled outside Winterfell as it was being stored for now. A crop that was a life saver for someone trapped in a siege.
He looked at the two girls who were cutting the cottage cheese that they had prepared after adding lemon to the milk. The cheese was going to be used in dishes as he was going to make it for the Lords. He was going to make the cheese with peas with a thick spicy gravy, like the food he had eaten once in an Asian Restaurant.
"A little fast," he spoke up calmly and the girls immediately sped up the process a more. The two of them were volunteers who had offered to work if they were paid and given three time food. There were many like that who had started to populate Wintertown slowly after hearing about the chances here. Infact the tanners and other shop owners were having more traffic than before due to the new residents of Wintertown. One could say that the town was expanding and with Lord Starks permission, more and more houses were being built as the houses were slowly started to be occupied.
It wasn't that hard to recreate concrete in this world with the amount of time the Maester and he spent in discussing theories and experiments. Infact the concrete was invented so deliberately that the Maester thought that it was result of some aimless experimentation. He didn't knew that it all had been Severus's extremely careful manipulation. Besides it wasn't as if he was doing something bad, his all manipulations had been entirely to better this stuck up medieval world a little.
Luwin had a spark for knowledge and experimentation, and Severus had only fuelled it more. The concrete invention was purely a secret till now. He knew that Maester Luwin hadn't even told about it to the Citadel. The entire process was a guarded secret for now.
The broken tower was repaired with it as well as many other parts of the castle which had fallen off or degraded. He had witnessed that Lord Stark was more than a little proud and overwhelmed at all of the innovations happening. The seed drill had spread across all of the North by now and more land was being prepared to be farmed by it.
There were many projects which he wanted to implement but he couldn't do it now. They required time and a little effort on their part and he wasn't ready for them by now. He was a common boy at the end of day and as much good his ideas were, his origins would hamper them.
Besides it just gave him more pleasure, afterall the common men believed now that even they could be great by seeing his example. He was famous among the children of his age as nearly every one of them worked under him or with him to earn some coin or learn some skills. Besides if the people had a steady supply of food to eat and a place to live, then they didn't bothered anyone much. Everyone just wanted a nice life for themselves.
Some of the men were choosing to be farmers or wanted to become soldiers for House Stark. Some of them were selected and trained in the art of weapons and fighting.
Even he himself was allowed to join the men in training. Lord Stark had given him the permission to come and train in the arts of fighting if he wanted. He had just accepted it and went on to join them sometimes hoping to learn swordfighting.
As much as clever and intelligent he was, he simply lacked a wand for himself. He could be killed even by a single stray arrow or someone armed by a knife or sword. Hence he had taken the practise seriously, hoping to learn the ways of sword.
Rodrik Cassel was a surly ass most of the time but the man was a good teacher nonetheless. He had been drilled in the stances and allowed to use a wooden sword during the practises to build enough skill first. Nonetheless he carried a dagger with himself for additional safety with him. He didn't wanted to die again this young, he will live till his old age and simply sire bastards here and there till he could.
Besides there were no Dark Lords or Dumbledore to bother him here, he thought amusedly.
"Severus, Gage needs more oil for frying potatoes and some extra orders of meat rolls and egg rolls," Ros spoke up loudly as she walked to him.
"I see," Severus replied back calmly. The meatrolls were already being fried for now, it will take a moment before they were ready to serve.
"They are being done," Severus commented as Ros reached near him.
Ros had to say that Severus was already prepared for most of the things. He had guessed correctly and already had meat rolls frying for the delivery. He was always like this, far more mature than anybody of their age.
Severus meanwhile continued looking over the cooking and doing the more important ones by himself. If there was one thing he was skilled at, it was multitasking. Brewing different potions simultaneously had made him skilled like an expert in cooking many items together.
He moved through the people and items like an artist as he started his cooking for the feast already from now. There was only 4 to 5 hours for the supper and he wasn't going to waste that time and do everything at the last moments.
