She watched him again. First Indra, now Celine. Did it never stop? Did Dylan even pause to look at her?

No, he didn't. He hadn't for three years. When she first met him he was perfect, everything she dreamed of. But now, he was just a shadow of that man. Unfortunately, her heart couldn't be convinced of that.

So she watched.

"Looks like Dylan's lucky day!"

She had to say it. Those little quips covered how she really felt. It covered the fact that she had been in love with High Guard Captain Dylan Hunt of the Andromeda Ascendant since the day she pulled him out of the black hole.

Then she listened as Celine informed him that they had been "distracted" together. Looks like Dylan's becoming a regular James Bond, she thought, saving the damsel in distress and then bedding her. It was one of the old earth characters she had despised, but Harper forced her to watch hour upon hour of him on flexis. Typical Harper.

But she couldn't take this anymore. The invincible Beka Valentine had reached her limit.

"I loved you then, and I love you now."

"I'm not opposed to that."

She listened to the sickening lines exchanged between Dylan and Celine. This was where she had to end this. As Celine disappeared, she stepped forward.

"Dylan, she's not the only one. I loved you then, when I pulled you out of the event horizon, and I love you now, to my chagrin. Because I know you could never love me. I'm not a part of your precious commonwealth, I was just a tool to help rebuild it."

He just looked at her. Not only looked at her, but at who he'd become. He realized – he had become the kind of person he had been trying to stop. The kind of person who he rebuilt the commonwealth to get rid of. The kind of person who put himself before his friends.

Now it was Dylan's turn to step forward.

"You're right. I don't love you, because I don't love myself. How can I love someone else?"

She smiled at this. This was the old Dylan, not the new one. Instead of words, though, she expressed her feelings with a kiss.
