Chapter two: Confounding the Senses

Lily rocked back and forth gripping her knees. She had crawled into the farthest corner of the darkened room and sobbed her heart out.

She was now sick to the very fabric of her being, she felt hurt. Her slender arms stung from the harsh grip of his hands. Maybe he didn't mean to do it she thought. I strung him along he seemed so nice and charming, and he said he loved me!

Another sob racked her body. She slowly got to her feet and stumbled forwards, blindly she felt her way to the bathroom and fell to her knees. Lily was sick, her stomach ached and she longed to be rid of this feeling.

Now ice-cold water poured down her body, she was shaking uncontrollably. Her green catlike eyes were red rimmed; Lily looked down at herself through trickles of water. Her pale skin was red and bruised but the pain was only felt in her heart.

The shower washed away nothing of the filth she felt.

The bed was only a few feet away now, the alcohol had confounded her senses or maybe it was the spliff. Crawling on sore knees she finally reached the four-poster.

Burying her head into the soft-feathered pillow she sniffled once and was soon profoundly dead to the world.

"Lily" said the voice "Lily my sweet"

Lily stirred. Groggily she lifted her head, the room span and then her eyes focused on a point between untidy black hair and a nose. Circular glasses, huh?

"James!" exclaimed Lily pulling the covers tightly about her.

James cocked his head to one side as if considering something then finally he said "You look-"

"Terrible I know" groaned Lily rolling onto her side "Can you get me a glass of water please"

As James left Lily quickly dressed, her body felt tender. She pulled on the highest polo neck she could find, to hide to bites, and brushed her flaming locks as best she could. As Lily reached the almost empty common room James strode through the portal door the glass of water held aloft.

"Here's your..." But Lily was already past him and racing down the many stairs of Hogwarts "Water" James finished and sighed to himself.

Albus Dumbledore's brow furrowed, his bushy red eyebrows set at an angle as he peered down a crooked nose at the transfiguration register.

Two desks stood empty. Lily renowned for her excellent time-keeping and astounding grades was absent as was her unique friend Remus Lupin.

Unique, yes. Like all boys his age he sprouted hair, but not just the boyhood stubble. But transformation now! Impossible, the sun clearly shone unhindered by a cloudless sky.

So where were they?
