Chapter 6

When Meg awoke late the next morning, she wasn't up on the deck like she had been the night before. Now she was in a cabin below deck. (A/N: I'm sorry! I couldn't help it!) As she sat up and rubbed her eyes there was a knock on the door and Jack let himself in.

"Mornin', luv." Jack greeted her with a smile.

"Good morning Captain." Meg said, politely which was most unlike her.

"Sleep well?" Jack asked.

"Like a log." Meg replied, "Um, why am I down here?"

"I went ta wake ye up in the wee hours but ye were so peaceful." Jack explained, "So I brought ye down here to sleep longer."

Meg smiled, "Thanks."

She was glad Jack hadn't had to face her early morning wrath. She'd never been a big morning person. She liked to stay in bed watching movies all day when she got the chance.

"Now ye have a choice, luv." Jack said, breaking Meg's thoughts of home, "Ye can stay on board the Pearl with me an' the crew. Or ye can go back to Tortuga alone, savvy?"

Meg didn't need to think twice. She felt like she fitted in in this time period, with the people. She felt like she belonged: "I want to stay here."

"Ye'll have to work as part of the crew, mind." Jack explained.

"I'll do whatever, just don't leave me alone." Meg hoped she didn't sound too desperate but truth be told, she really was!

After a long moment of consideration Jack stretched his hand out for Meg to shake: "We have an accord. Ye'll cook for me an' the crew and' we'll keep ye safe."

"Aye." Meg shook Jack's outstretched hand, "Show me to the kitchen."

"Potatoes? Potatoes?"

Meg and Pippa were stood in Galley with a great pile of potatoes in front of them.

"Aye." Jack said, "Tatties. Ye'll be in charge of the cookin'."

"Um, maybe now's not the best time to tell you I failed food tech!" Meg said, quietly, "Blew up the ovens!"

"Did ye now?" Jack asked, intruiged, "Well Pippa here'll show ye the ropes an' an make sure ye have no accidents. I'll be back to check on ye in an hour, savvy?"

"Aye, Cap'n Jack sir!" Pippa piped up with a giggle.

Jack rolled his eyes and left the girls to it.

"Wow potatoes. This'll be fun." Meg said. Her famous sarcasm echoing heavily in her voice.

"You should think yourself lucky that we have these." Pippa said in all seriousness, "When I first came on board all we had was stale bread. That was about it."

Meg felt bad: "Sorry." She said, picking up an knife and beginning to skin the potatoes.

The girls worked in silence for a while. Meg was thinking about Jack, Harmless 'I wonder what his favourite food is?' type thoughts at first which quickly changed to 'I wonder what it would be like to be in his arms?' and 'I wonder what it would be like to kiss him'

"Thinking about Jack, are we?" Pippa asked.

Meg snapped back to reality: "No!" She said, a little too quickly, "I mean...no, no I'm not."

"Well you've been peeling that same tatty for 15 minutes. There must be something...or someone on your mind!" Pippa smiled.

Meg looked at the tiny, mutilated potato in her hand.

"So, spill it!"

Meg sighed: "Okay, so I was thinking about Jack but I didn't mean to!"

Pippa rolled her eyes: "Yeah right."

"I didn't!" Meg said, "Much."

Pippa shook her head: "Like I said before I give it three days before you're completely and utterly in lurve with him."

"We'll see, we'll see!"

A few hours later, the dinner was on the table and the crew were hungrily eating it down below.

Meg had excused herself and had gone up on deck. She was staring out at the vast ocean spread before the ship, completely oblivious to anything else going on around her which is why she didn't realize Jack was behind her until he slid his arms gently round her in a friendly hug. Meg jumped and turned round, pulling out of his embrace (A/N: That word always makes me think of that sleazy Embrace Of The Vampire film!).

"Captain...I was just..." Meg started.

"Ye don't need to explain, luv." Jack smiled, "It can get a bit rowdy down there. Sometimes I like ta get away too."

He walked up to the port (A/N: Left side to those of you not in the know!) side of the ship where Meg was now stood and stared out at the sea. There was a long moment of silence as the pair looked out to the sea. Meg peered at Jack trying to work out what he was thinking but Jacks face was completely unreadable. He seemed to just be at one with the sea. Meg found herself unwillingly admiring the Captain stood next to her. Seeing her looking him over, Jack turned to her: "Like what ye see, luv?" (A/N: God, everyone says that! :D)

"I might do." Meg smiled, mysteriously.

Jack smiled back and turned back to the sea: "Beautiful, isn't it?"

Meg nodded in agreement, trying not to concentrate on the rippling waves too much as they were making her feel slightly nauseous.

"This is why I became a pirate." Jack admitted, "Didn't like being holed up in London making maps. I'd rather be out 'ere followin' 'em."

Meg listened intently as Jack explained about his life before 'The Pearl'. He'd lived in London and worked as a cartographer. As soon as he'd found the money to commission 'The Black Pearl', he got himself out of there and become a pirate.

"So, what about ye?" Jack asked, when he'd finished "What's ye story?"

Meg sighed and told Jack her story. Jack listened intently to Meg's every word. He admired Meg for being so open with him despite only having known him a day. She was different from the other girls he'd met on Tortuga. She was vunerable, fragile and lost. When Jack first saved her in the alley he was attracted to her and had seen her as the possibility of an easy lay (A/N: Don'tcha just love honesty?) but now his feelings for her were slowly becoming something more than sexual.

He listened hard to her story, hanging on her every word. She'd been through a lot. Her father had been an abusive drunk who she and her mother had escaped when she was 7. Her older sister didn't talk to them anymore because she believed that marriage was for life and you should just put up with what your dealt and they hadn't. Meg had suffered from depression at the age of 13 when her mother had spiralled into alcoholism herself. Luckily her mother realized her problem before it was two late and the pair helped each other through.

Jack smiled at Meg. He was completely enchanted by this girl. She'd been through so much and come out the other side a decent, well-rounded girl. There wasn't any bitterness in her. She hadn't wished for another life. She'd made the most of what she had. Jack respected that.

Meg returned Jack's smile. She'd never told anyone that before. But then again Jack wasn't just anyone. He was unlike the rest of them. He treated her like an equal. Like a friend. Meg had had friends before, like Brittany but Jack was different. Brittany had always talked down to her in some ways and made her feel inadequate. Meg had never realized this before until she'd met Jack and Pippa. They were friends. Brittany had been someone who was using Meg until she found someone better.

Jack broke the intense silence: "It's getting' late. Ye'll be wantin' ta turn in, I imagine."

Meg nodded: "Yeah." She lied. She wasn't really very tired but she felt like she'd opened up to Jack enough for one day.

"Well I'm not havin' ye sleepin' on deck again, savvy?" Jack said, "Ye can sleep in ma cabin. I'll stay up 'ere with Pippa."

Meg smiled at Jack's generous offer but graciously declined: "I couldn't do that, Jack."

"That wasn' an offer, luv." Jack said, "That was an order. I'll show ye down."

He put a hand on Meg's back and gently led her below deck towards his cabin. He opened the door and pushed Meg gently inside, following close behind.

The cabin was simple. A little bed rested in one corner. A small chest and mirror were in the opposite corner and a chair in the corner opposite that with a small table next to it upon which was a map and a few books.

"It's not much." Jack admitted, "But it's warmer than up there."

Meg turned round to face Jack: "Are you sure about this?"

"Aye." Jack said.

Meg smiled: "Thanks."

"Ye welcome." Jack said, "I'll see ye in the mornin'."

He closed the door and left Meg alone to look around the room. She walked over to the table by the chair and picked up one of the books. It had no title or fancy cover. She opened it in the middle and saw a handwritten scrawl, which looked like a diary entry. Not wanting to be nosey, she shut the book and put it back on the pile. She then turned her attention to the map. Meg had never been very good at reading maps and this one was no exception. All the grid references and the islands looked confusing to her. She put the map carefully back under the books and walked to the chest. Carefully removing the mirror off the top of it, she flicked the locks open and lifted the lid. Bottles of rum, lots of them, lined the chest. Meg smiled.

Just like in the film, She thought.

She shut the lid, locked it and was careful to place the mirror back in the exact position she'd found it in. Meg let out a small yawn and realized she was more tired than she'd originally thought.

She walked over to the bed and lay down, pulling the blankets over her. She drifted off almost instantly into a deep dreamless sleep.

Eeee, good golly miss Molly! That was a hard one to write and I was in a pirate mood too!

Anyhoo, the back-story I provided for CJS is the back-story Disney gave in the original script for PotC. So there ya go!

Anyhoo #2 YAY! Just found out today that Secret Window is now being released in the UK on April 16th! Which is 6 months before it's originally slated September 24th release date! Am very happy now! *does happy dance*

Anyhoo #3 I know that Chapter may seem very...well...crap to a lot of people! I must admit I'm not that happy with it either but hey...every story has it's crap bit! Eg: PotC the bit where Lizzie and Barbossa are talking on the ship. That bored me.

Anyhoo #4 New chapter coming soooon! Hopefully quicker than this one!
