A Room Forbidden
Lireal was alone again. Almost the entire Clayr had been called to the nine day watch again and she was wandering the library looking for an interesting door. The Great Library was vast, full of unknown things. Not only books and records.
She found herself in front of a door that had a very odd symbol on it, a charter symbol that she did not know. Lirael bent down and got to work clearing the boundary rope so that she could explore this chamber. As she worked she remembered, it seemed so long ago that she had gone for a walk on the terrace thinking to kill herself. It was all because of the Sight. It hadn't come despite the fact that she was born into a group of people who had a gift she didn't. yet, she hoped.
But most days now she spent her time rapped up in her work hardly thinking of the Sight that just wouldn't come. Every time there was no one around to stop her she went exploring down through the old levels of the library the parts even some of the most gifted of the Clayr wouldn't go to.
She waved her bracelet in front of the lock and it came undone inside was a dark tunnel leading down. As usual Lirael had one hand on the mechanical mouse in her pocket and the other on the hilt of her dagger. You always had to be very careful down here.
She walked down the tunnel wary of everything around her until she reached a door. Once again she waved the bracelet around in front of it. The lock hesitated for a minute and then the door slid open. Inside she felt a pleasant breeze and a sense of more to her life.
It was a dimly lit room and as she looked up she saw that this chamber was lit with stars and a waxing moon. In the center of the room there was a small decrepit tree, and the shadow of a person. As the moon went through its cycle the tree grew and blossomed under the care of the shadow.
She new almost instantly that this room signified Hope and life. Something that she had never really had. The love of a real person. No real mother to have comforted her for so long. Lirael just wanted to cry. So she did. She fell to the floor and started to cry. She remained prone for long after she had stopped crying. But as she got up she felt something that she only felt in dreams now: a soft hand on her forehead somehow she new her mother was with her in this room. Sadly she couldn't stay here in the room of hope and love.
She headed back through the tunnel making sure to set the rope and seal back the way they had been before.
She walked back slowly thinking of how things could have been if she did have the sight, if she did still have a mother, or maybe if she had been born as someone else. Lirael then on decided that she was going to work harder and maybe the Sight would come to her eventually.
