I don't own Inuyasha...

Title: Defend Thy Soul

Category: Drama/humor

Summary: When it comes time to leave, there is one more thing Kagome has to do...take back her soul...

It had come down to one simple matter. She was about to travel home for the last time...and she was incomplete. The hole had grown bigger right after Naraku's ashes had floated away on the wind. Kagome had told Inuyasha about the ever-growing hole in her soul, but he hadn't listened. Nobody ever did listen...so when the undead priestess came to collect on her debt...Kagome took matters into her own hands...

Before Inuyasha could even take a step towards Kikyo, Kagome was there. And to everyone's shock and confusion, she had a particularly determined look upon her face. It was an expression rarely seen on Kagome's face...that peculiar light in her eye...an end-all kink in her smile. Kikyo's own eyes widened a mere fraction but she remained silent.

Inuyasha, who was first to come out of the dazed shock, narrowed his amber eyes at Kagome. Something did not smell right...there was a definite crackling of air around Kagome's profile...

Kagome took another step forward as Kikyo took a step backwards. Within a hair's breadth away, the reincarnated miko struck. Reaching out her hand, palm forward and fingers spread upwards towards the sky, she released a short burst of purifying energy. Kikyo's normally stoic expression fell apart as her stolen souls were released...down to the very last bit, where...hanging mid-way between the two women, it stayed until Kagome sighed...and it returned to its rightful owner.

As Kikyo's eyes turned completely lifeless, one very enraged hanyou took a threatening step towards the now whole Kagome. The young miko turned her head and sent a warning glance at him. The air cracked with unspent energy as Kagome struggled to keep her anger in check. For what seemed like hours, the group of travelers stood; tense...as if waiting for something...or someone to explode...

Then...Kagome's anger dissipated instantly and she skipped merrily down the path towards the well...calling out... "I will return someday!"
