Go back to the movie for a second: the announcement of the last mission. – "And you, Gawain?" asked with a sombre voice. Arthur leaves.
Has that scene or the look on Lancelot's face never prompted you to ask: "What??? Why didn't you ask him?" What went on in Lancelot's mind at that moment?

A dull train ride later: here's my shot at the question. Watch out for the hyperbole-alarm going off... ;-)
I know it's too small, but thanks for reading anyway.

Loyal Indignation

There, you leave in hasty pace…
…off into the brooding arms of your faith as if they were the loving arms of a lover.
There was no looking back, no queering eye, no hesitating question –
Not for me.

Why did you not ask me if I was with you?

Me that have loved you like a brother.
Me that, guided by a blind loyalty, would go through all the fires of this earth to save you.
Me that I have steadied every blade ever to be brandished against you,
Deflected every dagger aimed at your back,
Stepped into the line of every arrow sent for you.

Why did you not ask me to follow you?

Do you think me so strong, lacking any doubt, that I don't need your challenge?
Do you think me unmoved by your quandary?

I can see your pain,
the lines it draws on your noble face,
See your breathing turn shallow
And your hands opening up like withering flowers.

Your prayers,
spoken into the dark of the night,
are the ruins of your already faded universe.

Your doubt, sweet brother,
will persist to linger in the deep fabric of your troubled mind,
will fester like a sullen wound,
ever growing.

And once touched, it will pour its grinding power into your blood.
Arthur.

Share it with me.

There waits an eternity for you and me,
Filled by transparent silence,
only separated by a single moment of absent mindedness from the here and now.

You'll loose all faith.
Forever.

Then at last,
the last words spoken before the timeless stillness of my tomb,
Are transcended by all meaning.

I know you, brother.
Only then will you share your burden.

The things that surround me are so lonely,
as the sun finally touches the earth.
All that will be left is this small night.
Filled only with my all-consuming love.

Tomorrow the world will be empty.
