A/N: Saw 'Listening To Fear' the other day. Got to wondering what Spike was doing all that time. He had to have been able to hear them. What was he thinking? This is my version.

Spike paused in his rummaging through the boxes in Buffy's basement. He heard the front door open and close then voices in the foyer.

'Bloody Hell!' He thought. 'They're home. Trapped. Nothing to do but wait it out. Maybe I can sneak out when they go to bed.'

He crept up the stairs and sat on a step not too far from the door. Noticing it was ajar he very softly closed it. He heard them moving around upstairs. Just as it got quiet he stood up to leave only to freeze when he heard Joyce in the kitchen cooking. He frowned in dismay as he listened to Joyce. Obviously the Slayer's mum wasn't in top form. To tell the slender-as-a-rail slayer that she was fat…well…it was clear all was not fine in the Summers house.

He leaned against the door as Buffy and the Little Bit took their mother back up to her room. He heard Joyce's rambling, it wasn't hard, she was quite loud for parts of it. His unbeating heart broke as he realized there was something seriously wrong. He felt Buffy come back into the kitchen to wash the dishes Joyce had dirtied in her aborted breakfast making. She turned the radio up so she couldn't hear her mother's ranting. He smelled her tears as she wept over the sink. He pressed his right hand to the door and closed his eyes. His left hand gripping the stolen photos in helpless anger. He knew without a doubt that if he made his presence known, she would kill him. So he stood there immobilized, upset and heartbroken for her. His head bent. A tear escaped, tracking slowly down his lean face. He listened to her fear, heard her sorrow. Knowing there was nothing he could do. Nothing she would accept. Listened to her cry and waited for his chance to escape.
