Forest of the Gods
Chapter 2: More curses
Somewhere
After traveling another day after seeing the tree, he suddenly heard the sound of a vast amount of destruction in the forest.
'Hmmm, maybe a good fight.'
And so our hero went off to ward off whatever evil may come.
Watchtower near a village
A teenage boy addresses an old man sitting in the tower while watching the forest line.
"Something's coming...... Jii-ji, what can it be?"
"I don't know. It's not human." replied the old man.
"Back at the village, Hii-sama is calling for everyone to return."
"It comes...... It's a Tatari-gami!"
"Tatari-gami?! Yakkuru, run!!" (a/n: if you can't guess now, you really need to watch more anime.)
The Tatari-gami ("Curse God") knocks down the watchtower. The teen grabs 'Jii-ji' and leaps with him into the nearest treetop.
"It's headed towards the village!! It's going to attack!" exclaims the boy.
"Ashitaka, don't touch the Tatari-gami. You'll be cursed if you do!!" he warns the boy now known as Ashitaka.
"Yakkuru!"
Ashitaka rides Yakkuru in front of the Tatari-gami.
"Calm! Calm down! Surely you are to all appearances a mountain god of name, but why do you rampage like this?"
The Tatari-gami sees the three girls, and turns towards them.
"Monster!" one girl yells.
"To the village!" yells another.
"Stop! Why do you attack our village?! Stop it! Calm down!" Ashitaka pleaded
One girl slips and falls while draws her sword and prepares to defend them.
"Hold on!!" Ashitaka yells as he draws an arrow into his bow.
Seeing that the girls are in danger, Ashitaka shoots an arrow through one of the Tatari-gami's red "eyes." The monster stops; Ashitaka attempts to keep himself and Yakkuru between the monster and the village while the girls flee
"Hurry!" he yells to the girls
Suddenly the Tatari-gami's tentacles explode into action. Although Yakkuru gallops away from the Tatari-gami, Ashitaka's right arm is about to get caught by the Tatari-gami's black feelers/snakes.
Just as the tentacle was about to grab his arm the Tatari-gami is struck in the side by a ball of light that explodes and causes it to lurch to one side.
He looks towards the source of the light and sees a young lad no older than he running at them while glowing a bright blue.
"Ha, take that demon!" Shouted the new boy.
As he gets closer Ashitaka can make out more of him. He sees a very fit person with strange looking clothing and... a pigtail? Yep our boy Ranma has come to town.
"ahem" Fanfare starts
Mister Trouble never hangs around When he hears this Wild sound:
"Here I come to save the day!"
That means that Wild Horse is on the way!
Yes sir, when there is a wrong to right Wild Horse will join the fight On the sea or on the land He gets the situation well in hand
So though we are in danger We never despair 'Cause we know that where there's danger He is there! He is there! On the land! On the sea! In the air!
We're not worryin' at all We're just listenin' for his call:
"Here I come to save the day!"
That means that Wild Horse is on the way! end fanfare
a/n: sorry, just pictured mighty mouse with that scene. now back to the story.
"Kachu Tenshin Amaguriken" he shouts as he proceeds to punch the demon 923 times in one second.
This only stuns the Tatari-gami so Ranma decides to bring out the big guns.
"Kijin Raishu Dan" he shouts as he pulls his arms back as fast as he can and two blades of ki come from him. The blades both strike the demon, the first blade cutting half way into his hide, the second cutting into his ribs, splitting his heart in two.
The Tatari-gami collapses and its black "snakes" gradually disappear, revealing a huge Boar God underneath.
"He beat it!!" exclaims Ashitaka.
"Get Hii-sama, hurry!" another man shouts.
Ranma then clutches his arm and falls to the ground in pain.
"Onii-sama" a girl says as she heads towards our fallen hero. a/n: is onii-sama right? i can never remember.
"Kaya, don't touch. It's not an ordinary wound." says Ashitaka.
"The stranger is wounded! Where's Hii-sama?" shouts another man.
"Everyone, you mustn't get any closer!" shouts Hii.
Kaya looks at her " Hii-sama!"
"Pour this water slowly onto the wound."
"Yes ma'am." replies the young girl.
"Though I know not from whence thou came, rampaging god, I would humbly and respectfully speak to thee. We will build a mound on this place, and observe a festival in honor of thy departed spirit. Forget thine anger, and be calmed." Hii said to the boar god.
"You damned filthy humans. You will know well my suffering and hatred......" the creature avowed.
After saying this, his flesh dissolves.
That night in the village shrine
Hii, Ashitaka, and several of the village elders are sitting with Ranma. One wall of the shrine is a cliffside which bulges into the room; this has become a shintai or "god-body" (an object of worship in a Shinto shrine in which the ghost of a deity is believed to dwell). Beneath the shintai is a small altar flanked by flickering lamps. Hii and Ranma sit facing each other on either side of the altar. Hii is fortune-telling by casting small pebbles on a cloth mat in front of her; Ranma sits upright, hiding his resignation.
'These people seem to be at peace with their surroundings. I noticed they only take what they need and nothing else. I think .... that I would like it here.' Ranma thinks to himself
After stirring the pebbles and reading their meaning she starts.
"Well, this has become a worrisome situation. That boar turned up from a land in the far west. Driven mad by the poison of his mortal wounds, his flesh rotting away, he ran and ran towards here, accumulating curses, until finally he became a Tatari-gami. Honored stranger..."
"Hai" Ranma replies.
"Show everyone your right arm."
He slowly uncovers his right arm to show the marks left by the demon.
"Honored stranger, are you prepared to gaze at your own destiny?" Hii asks.
"Hai. I've been ready since I left home."
"Hmm...... that wound will eventually reach your bone, and probably will kill you."
"...... Hii-sama, isn't there anything that we can do? He saved our village!" Yama-oji states.
"That's right, he saved our village and protected our girls!!" another man declares.
"To only sit and wait for death......" another man said glumly.
Hii raises a hand to gain their attention again.
"No one can change destiny. However, it is up to him to decide whether to just wait, or to proceed for himself. Look..."
She then pulls out a ball of iron and shows it to everyone assembled.
"This is the thing that ate into that boar's body. It smashed his bones, tore up his guts, giving him cruel pain and suffering. Otherwise, would the boar have become the likes of a Tatari-gami?...... There is something ominous happening in the western lands. Going there, to ascertain everything with eyes unclouded with hate, you may possibly discover a way to sever that curse."
"Hai" Ranma says in finality
"Defeated in the war against the Yamato regime, we have been hidden away in this place for more than 500 years. Now we've heard that the power of the Yamato king has withered, and that even the fangs of the Shoguns were broken. Yet, the bloodline of our clan also weakens. It may be unchangeable fate that, at this time, the young man who should have become one of us departs to the west."
"We wish you well in your journey stranger, and hope that you can rid yourself of this curse."
"And I hope that someday I may return to your village. It is just the sort of place I could finally live in peace at." he replies back
This brings a smile to Hii. "And we would like that as well."
As he leaves the village everyone bows their head to him in a show of respect. As he nears the edge of the village a girl comes running up to him.
"Onii-sama, matte!" she calls to him.
Ranma kneels down to one knee as she approaches "What is it little one?"
"I know you just came here, but if you ever return I want you to know that you're now my onii-sama. I want you to accept this gift so you will forever remember us and that you have family here." as she says this, Kaya hands him a crystal dagger.
"Isn't this your precious crystal knife?" asks Ashitaka.
"I blew a breath upon it to make a good-luck charm. I will always be thinking about you, always." she whispers into his ear as she hugs him.
"Arigato, imouto-chan." he whispers back as he gives her one last squeeze and relinquishes the hug.
"Stranger, one more thing." Ashitaka says.
"Hai?"
"My friend Yakkuru wants to go with you."
At this the elk standing next to him walks up to Ranma and brushes his nose against the pigtailed boy's shoulder.
"Haha, well who am I to turn down the request of such a fine friend." he states as he gently scratches the muzzle of the great red elk.
a/n:
anybody else having problems getting asteriks' and the like to show up now?
Yep, it was Mononoke Hime. I have been watching this over and over but noticed i don't recall any crossovers with it. Since i'm currently in a block on Interlycanthropy I decided to go ahead and put this one down. I may see where it goes.
I know Ranma seems a bit out of character at the end, but I figure that the tree left some of its peace in him for his offering and he seems to trust these people even tho he's only known them a short time. So thanks to the tree, he will be a little calmer... but I bet his foot in mouth will start acting up again when he see Lady Eboshi. hehe.
I'll probably deviate more from the movie later, but certain things have to be played out….
So, what do yall think?
