Two Flowers
Disclaimer; the characters are J.K.Rowlings, but the plot is mine.
Just something that came to me. I like to think Petunia wasn't always mean, and this is a fic about how her relationship with her sister changed.
It's bathtime in the Evans house. Six-year-old Petunia and her younger sister Lily are sharing a bath. Covered from head to toes in bubbles they are trying to form hats and dresses out of the stuff. Lily's small, four-year-old hands wash her sisters back then the swap and Petunia cleans Lily. Afterwards they dry themselves down then tie their towels around their necks like capes and run around the house, naked, pretending to be superheros.
Petunia is now ten, and Lily is eight, they are playing dolls in a magnificent doll-house Petunia got for her birthday, from an uncle. "Barbie ith a famouth actress, like I'm gonna be and she'th thaying at her home for a little while before she goeth back to Hollywood, ithn't she, Pet?" Lily hasn't quite out grown her lisp yet. "Yep, and Anna is lookin' after her, before she goes to work at the hospital, cuz movie stars need lookin' after by theirsisters."
Their playing is interrupted by Mrs Evans, who has come to bring the news that is the first step to the severing of the sister's relationship. "Petunia, I have something important to tell you." She says. "What! What!" Petunia scrambles of the floor, brushing of her skirt and looks up at her mother, Lily isn't far behind. "You're going to go start boarding school in three weeks! It is a very good school, very expensive and proper, Lily might go too, in a few years, and you'll be mixing with the right kind of girl thereā¦" Mrs Evans continues her ramblings, unaware that she has crushed two girls, who are just staring at the prospect of being separated.
Three years pass and the girls grow apart. Time at boarding school has changed Petunia; she is judgemental and gossipy. On Lily's 11th birthday they are distant, even unfriendly towards each other. The letter is the final straw, their bond is broken beyond repair, in Petunia's eyes Lily in now a freak, a weirdo. They trade insults when the pass in the corridor, make fun of the others friends and boyfriends but neither ever truly forgets the amazing bond of sisterhood they once shared.
The End.
