Rain
Rain.
It trickled down her pale blue hair. It soaked into her high school uniform it dripped down her pale skin. Rei Ayanami took no notice of the rainwater that drenched her. Her blood red eyes were like mirrors, reflecting the world, showing nothing of herself.
Rain.
People will hurry home under their umbrellas. They will dry themselves, and then have a cup of some warm drink or another. After the Third Impact, mankind had proven again that they would survive. Coming out of the Sea of LCL, the rebuilt their lives. They wanted to move on and forget. They could not. Those without the will to live never came back fro that red ocean. That was the cold hard truth of life.
Rain.
Young couples giggled and blushed as they walked under the same umbrella. A young child danced in a puddle of water. His mother chased him fretfully, trying to convince him to return inside. The mother finally caught her son and gave him a kiss and a hug. The two walked away as Rei's crimson eyes followed them.

From around the corner came a pair she knew well. After the Third Impact, they had developed a close relationship. The Second Child Asuka Langley Soryu and the Third Child Shinji Ikari. The former EVA pilots passed her by without a glance. They were too immersed in their own little world, in each other. They soon disappeared in the gathering gloom. Night had almost come.

Rei could envision their return to the apartment they shared with Major Katsuragi. The major would undoubtedly tease the two about their relationship. A ghost of a smile briefly haunted the albino's face. Pilot Soryu would probably become very angry. Ikari-kun will have a difficult time restraining her. The major was upset that it would rain during her engagement party. Soon, Misato would become married to the one pilot Soryu had once fancied, Kaji. He had been miraculously resurrected fro the Sea of LCL. Yes, they were happy. They were a 'family,' and they would never need her.
Rain.
Three years had passed since the Third Impact. Now, Touji Suzuhara and Hikari Horaki were an 'item.' Ritsuko Akagi and Commander Ikari never returned. They were not much missed, the First Child silently mused. I am not needed here, she thought to herself. Humanity is getting on fine without me. My work is done. As a young high school girl passed by, she saw a girl, pale of skin, with red eyes and pale blue hair sprout wings. Even as she gapped, the apparition began to dissipate. After blinking for a moment or so, she shook her head. It was probably just a weird hallucination. After her form vanished from sight, night arrived. The rain continued to fall, but there was no girl.

Author's Note: Weird story eh? Sorry! I always thought of Rei as something ethereal, not human. I think it wasn't really Rei in this chapter, but her spirit, lingering on to see what happened to the world. I always believed that she was the avatar of some angel. She certainly can't be completely human. Besides, part of her is angel. It was just interesting to write my views on what happened after Third Impact. This is my first one-shot. Please read, enjoy, and review! : P.
