The night wind whispered through the orchard trees, bringing with it the sweet smell of summer. Alucard made his way down a beaten path on the side of the park. He could smell the scent of blooming flowers, even as the wind redirected itself.
He could almost taste the blood that ran through the human's veins as he passed them on their way. One person in particular caught his eye. She walked alone on a separate path that ran adjacent to the one Alucard walked upon.
She flitted her hair every so often and sighed as if her world were coming down around her. She seemed sad for some reason, so he decided to read her thoughts.
(Girl's thoughts)
Why is the world the way it is? Why can't everyone just die? I suppose it would be mean if any one knew I thought that, but humans are so boring… Maybe things would have been different if I could only bring him back…
The girl tried to erase what she had started thinking. She was frightened of the aspect of remembering something. This so called 'something' turned out to be a someone, when the vampire caught an image in her mind.
It was a small child; a little boy about the age of maybe eight or nine years. He had black hair as well, with light colored eyes. He was smiling in one image, and crying in another. The one with him crying boasted a dry sob from the girl Alucard was following.
Alucard hadn't noticed how far he had walked until he realized that the park was far behind him. The forest loomed near by, the trees creaking and moaning in their efforts to stay upright in the wind.
"The call of the dead," the girl mumbled from somewhere up ahead. Still, the vampire lord followed her, keeping just far enough back as so not to be noticed.
The path sloped gently downward. Enough so that he caught a glimpse of her hair as it billowed behind her slender figure. The rise and fall of her heartbeat rang in Alucard's ears, dragging a malicious smile from him.
The girl suddenly stopped, aware of a presence around her. She searched the darkness for whatever it was that quickened her heart's pace. Seeing nothing, she let it go and leaned against a nearby tree. She seemed to take comfort in the shelter that the forest gave her. She sighed and was almost as quickly taken into slumber.
"Now that wasn't a smart thing to do. And to think there was a vampire following her this whole time," he laughed as the girl slept. He heard, almost too late, the crackle of breaking limps as the onslaught began.
A black shadow jumped from the trees towards the girl. Before the vampire could even react, she was up and the shadow on the ground. She approached it, blowing lovingly on the smoking end of her gun. In one fluid motion, she unsheathed a sword and cut the head from the thing.
Another vampire? Alucard thought as it sizzled and smoldered. He watched the girl as she smirked and wiped the blood onto a cloth. Right in front of his eyes, he watched as the cloth caught fire in the girl's hand.
"So, we have a new one…." Alucard called into his communicator.
"Alucard, get back here right now!" someone yelled over the com. System.
"Ye, master." With that, he slipped away into the dark.
