Rum, and the Art of Courting
On the deck of the Pearl songs of swabs and their girls
were drowned out by the song of the sea.
Captain Jack, in his heart and his soul, stood apart,
from the crowd, as he sighed listlessly
Now he knew that the sum of allotments of rum
came to naught in a week and a day,
So he loudly declared, to his merry but scared,
"to Port Royal, me hearties. Make way."
So deep was his need that he failed to take heed
of wise Gibbs' "take some muscle for cover,"
for each thought in Jack's head craved the warmth of a bed,
that of James, his sweet commodore lover.
So he sailed his best girl, and the crew of the Pearl
within sight of the cliffs at Port Royal
where Jack set afloat in a small but swift boat
and found shore without tarry or toil.
Once his boat kissed the land, his boots kicked the sand
making haste for the pub on the green
where without disguise, save the kohl on his eyes,
he stole all their rum stores, unseen.
In just three score trips, with a sway in his hips,
he transported each bottle of rum
Now, he must be admired, for although he was tired,
he remembered for whom he had come.
With a bottle to share, and one to drink there,
he ran to the house of his man,
but casing the place, he came face to face
with Gillette, a slight hitch in his plan.
Gillette was well groomed and sweetly perfumed,
as cute as a bug, maybe cuter
He did look surprised, when he first recognized
Captain Jack, as his rivaling suitor.
When it came down to those, who would step on his toes,
Captain Jack was not one to coddle.
So, before he could yell, or curse Jack to hell,
he knocked out Gillette with his bottle.
He did pause to lift Gillette's ribbon tied gift,
stepping over the unconscious dandy.
"No lad at these games will ever woo James!"
not when Jack has his hard liquor handy.
