ARK, 57 years ago
Gerald Robotnik paced in front of a stasis chamber, impatiently waiting for the being inside to be born. This was the first of Project: UL. He was Neo, Neo the First Ultimate Lifeform.
Tired of pacing, Gerald moved to the second stasis chamber. Inside there was Shadow, the Second Ultimate Lifeform.
He stared at the 'unborn' form of Shadow for a few more seconds before going back to pacing in front of Neo.
He stopped his pacing as a red light flashed on top of Neo's stasis chamber. Using a radio on his belt, he alerted some scientists that Neo was being 'born'.
Five scientists ran into the room, crowding in front of Neo's chamber. They quickly got into some semblance of order, draining the green water in the stasis chamber, taking Neo out and placing him gently on a flat metal table, poking and prodding him, checking his heart, lungs and other vital organs and generally making sure he was healthy.
Seconds after releasing Neo from his chamber, a red light above Shadow's chamber flashed and, thanks to Gerald and his radio, another team of five scientists were alerted. The new team of scientists copied the other teams movement but with Shadow, not Neo.
Watching the reactions of the two subjects as they woke up, Gerald smiled. Now he had done his part to help Maria and the world. All that there was left to was to watch and wait and the two hedgehogs grew and learned.
ARK, 55 years ago
Shadow walked down one of the many metal hallways on Space Colony ARK. He was going to see Neo and Maria; they were going to visit ARK's replica of a beach today and play. All of a sudden, a loud boom echoed from up the hallway. Eyes wide, recognizing the source of the sound, Shadow ran his fastest towards Maria's bedroom. He had to hurry; Maria and Neo could be in danger.
It turned out to be an explosion. Not large enough to cause damage to the ARK, but certainly large enough to kill, and kill it did. Thankfully Maria wasn't hurt, but four others died. The first three didn't worry Shadow much; they were three scientists whom he had never met before. The fourth, however, caused great pain to his young heart: it was Neo.
Everyone who knew about Neo grieved for him. Shadow, in his grief, unconsciously locked away his memories of Neo, not knowing of consequences of his actions in the future, due to the pain they caused. Gerald himself tried to erase all evidence of Neo – he renamed the project and purpose of the project in hopes everyone would forget. Everyone did with the exception of Shadow, as his memories were only locked away in the back of his mind, ready to be reawakened when they were needed most…
Yay! Prologue finished! Remember, R&R! But before I forget, a bit of revenge on my little sister...
