Kind of Friend

By: Rei Hiyashiro

Do i really have to say it.... :sum1 yells yeh!: fine...:sigh: i don't own any of the characters in this story...:sobs: happy now?!!?

He sat staring at his book, although he wasn't really reading the words. It was more of an excuse to stay in the common room and watch James and Lily.

She giggled. He got sadder.

James knew he had a crush on her, but did he care? No. He asked her out anyway, made it obvious that he liked her and not be a good friend and tell her what a great friend Remus was. Why couldn't James be that kind of friend?

Remus looked up, staring at the fireplace so he could see them out of the corner of his eye. She was sitting, curled in his lap, giggling as he whispered sweet nothings in her ear. Remus did his best to keep a straight face, to keep from staring at them, to keep from scowling, to keep from jumping up and strangling James because he stole her away from him.

He was the one who pointed out her great features. Her beautiful, silky hair, her gleaming emerald eyes, her perfect pale complection, her light pink, full lips, her bright mind, her gleaming smile. James had asked her out that day just to spite and tease Remus. But when she finally accepted, he fell in love. It was because of Remus that he fell in love, got to enjoy this glorious feeling, got to know Lily Evans, but did Remus get one thank you? No.

He was looking on from the corner of his eye sadly, hoping they didn't notice, because James wasn't the kind of friend who would put his feelings aside and tell her what a great friend he was. All because he wasn't that kind of friend. But being the good friend he was, Remus tried to be happy for them. And he was, somewhere in him. He tried to get over her, he tried dating other girls but all it did was make him fall for Lily more, thinking about these girls' flaws that Lily didn't have. And now he had to wonder, what if Remus had asked her out? Would he have been the one she was fawning over, the one with her on his lap giggling as Remus whispered in her ear, the one she would kiss at any time of day in front of the whole student body if she could.

But he hadn't, and he was positive that she wouldn't break up with Prongs for his best friend, his sidekick. The guy she regarded but never gave a second thought about the way he looked at her.

The were heavy footsteps down the boys' dormitories and Remus turned.

"You're all still down here? It's already one A.M. for Merlin's sake," Sirius complained as he rubbed his eyes.

"Not anymore," Remus said, snapping his book closed. They were starting to get to him anyway. "Good night James, Lily."

"'Night Moony," James said.

"Good night Remus," Lily smiled.

As Remus and Sirius made their way back up the steps, Moony felt his heart finally break after two years of Lily and James using a tiny chisel to chip away at it.
