Prologue

Shane McMahon woke up with a ringing in his ears.

As the owner of the World Wrestling Federation sat up in bed, glancing over at his sleeping wife. Whatever startled him awake had nothing to do with his pregnant wife. Marissa wasn't due with their son until late February. It was the fact of the impending birth that motivated Shane to give a bit more control to WWF commissioner Mick Foley. Not that he put much of a leash on Mick as far as wrestlers went anyway.

As Shane started to ponder what had awakened him from sleep, the ringing happened again. He realized that it was the telephone. He picked it up, hoping nothing had happened to his mother, Linda.

"Hello?"

Silence greeted him.

"Hello?" he asked into the phone, becoming annoyed. He wished for a moment that he had actually gotten out of bed and picked up a phone in one of the other rooms in the house. Shane and Marissa's bedroom was the only one without caller ID; if this was a prank caller, Shane would see to it that whoever it was got prosecuted.

"Hello?" He asked a third time, completely exasperated, trying not to lose his temper and raise his voice next to a sleeping Marissa.

This time, Shane McMahon got an answer.

"S - Shane?" a timid voice asked him back.

Shane was frozen in his bed. He sat for a few moments in shock. He recognized the voice on the other end! It had been a little more than three years since he'd heard the voice on the other end of the line. It may as well have been a voice from beyond the grave to Shane.

He'd certainly never expected to hear from his dead sister three years after her death on the phone!

"S - Stephanie?" He managed to utter his dead sister's name.

"Shane," Stephanie spoke again, and this time Shane realized that not only was her voice nervous but also tearful as well.

"Me and Hunter need your help."
