A/N this is a fairly depressing little drabble I thought up in – I kid you not – Pizza Hut this evening. It has nothing to do with the 'Wavelength' series I'm currently writing.

One Last Kiss

When the Wraith took Elizabeth Weir, all Rodney could think was, one more minute. One more minute and I can save her. And if not – if I don't get there in time – one kiss. That's all I ask. One kiss.

He didn't know who he was talking to – praying to. He didn't believe in God. Perhaps it was the Ancients he begged for that one moment with Elizabeth he had never had the courage to get when she was alive and safe and healthy.

When he brought Elizabeth back to Atlantis, with her grey-haired and shaking, after the Wraith took most of her life, all Rodney could think was, one more year. Please, just one more year with her to tell her how I feel. To show her how we can be.

Two and a half years later, when they shared quarters together in the City, when Rodney brought Elizabeth food and helped her to wash and dress herself, every day he thought, one more month. Just another month to show her how much I care. One more month together while she still knows me, knows herself.

When Elizabeth was taken to the infirmary, all Rodney could think was, another week…please, just one more week to tell her all I feel, to hold her hand and tell her she won't die alone.

Ten days later, when he sat by Elizabeth's side as his lover drifted in and out of consciousness, Rodney thought, one more day…just one more day to sit by her side and tell her I love her. One more day to figure out how I'm going to live without her – whether I can at all.

Thirteen hours later, with Beckett taking him aside and saying that it would be over very soon, all Rodney thought was, one more hour…that's all I need. One more hour, please. I can't let her go just yet. One more hour to say goodbye.

A few minutes later, as Rodney sat beside Elizabeth, holding her hand and watching her trying to speak, struggling to breathe, as he stroked her hair and said it was okay, she could let go now, all he could think was, one more moment…one more moment to say goodbye.

One more moment.

One last kiss.
