"Take a moment to ask yourself if this is how we fall apart." -Rebecca Sugar
The breeze was nice tonight as Steven laid beneath the stars, his arms folded behind his head. The teen had been driving for a while now, and since there was no motel in sight and he didn't feel like sitting at the wheel for another couple hours, he opted for a snooze under the sky.
Almost asleep he was unexpectedly shaken off the roof of his car by a strong force that even lifted the wheels off of the ground. Luckily his car didn't tip over onto him, but had just rocked back over like nothing had happened.
Picking himself off the ground groaning he saw two feet in front of him. Then as his eyes traveled upwards he saw legs, a torso, arms, and a shocked looking face staring back with their hands clasped over top of their mouth.
"Um hi?" Steven said as he stood up and straightened his jacket and pants.
In front of him was a kid? He looked a little younger than Peedee with big green eyes and soft yellow curls, but what was more surprising was that the other's skin was shining. It was like a halo of light surrounded the boy as he met Steven's own dark brown orbs.
"I'm Steven Universe. And uh who are you?"
The other didn't respond, instead he fidgeted with the collar of his turtleneck looking ashamed. He gestured towards the car behind the gem hybrid.
Steven slowly turned back to the vehicle now seeing a human sized dent on the passenger side door.
"That's okay, I can fix that later." He brushed it off. It wasn't like that was the first time he faced property damage, and besides it looked like it still worked.
Giving his attention back to the illuminated figure in front of him, he asked again, "So, what's your name?"
A panicked stare met his gaze.
"Wait, you don't speak english? You are glowing… So an alien? Is it offensive to call you that? If you are, I know space pretty well. We could find a translator-"
Steven paused, cut off by the boy before him laughing silently. His frail shoulders shaking as he held tightly around his midsection partially bent over. He calmed down and looked up and smiled brightly at the teen, motioning to his neck.
"Oh, you can't talk?"
The other nodded, pulling down the collar of his shirt to reveal a long scar angrily marred onto him. Steven shuddered a bit. But then an idea bloomed into his mind.
He grinned and said, " I think I can fix that if you'll let me."
The blond looked at him confused, but allowed Steven to approach closer.
Spitting into his hand, the dark-haired teen gingerly placed his palm flat against the younger boy's throat and watched as sparks danced between his fingertips, creating a strong feeling of warmth in both of them.
"Hope this works!"
Pulling back the earthen gem watched as the scarred tissue smoothed out, and a soft gasp broke out from the blond's lips. Amazed by the sensation of the new skin and the sound of his soft breathing the little boy's eyes began filling up with tears.
"I'm sorry!" Steven immediately apologized, backing away as he saw the droplets fall, "Please don't cry!"
"...Thank you." A hushed voice whispered kindly, " I haven't been able to talk for so long, so thank you."
"You're welcome." Steven felt his heart warmed by the sweet voice. Looking at him he saw the clarity in his eyes sparkling with unbridled joy. The visitor then sucked air into his lungs and continued.
"My name is Joey, and even though some of my friend's are aliens I'm not. But I am in the wrong dimension which is why I'm glowing. It happens when we exit out of the Speedforce at the incorrect time."
The gem hybrid was very confused, his eyebrows raising with his mouth a gape.
He's from another dimension! And what's a Speedforce? Was that like the warp pad?
Tinkling laughter was heard as Steven focused back on the other boy.
"Don't think so hard, it doesn't even make that much sense to me," Joey giggled, "No one is really sure how it works including Wally, and it's a part of him."
"But you'll be able to get home right?" He asked knowing how much he panicked when he was trapped away from home.
"Oh yeah, I'll be fine. I just have to wait for the Herald to pick me up. Since we have a telepathic link set up he'll be here soon."
The older teen felt relieved, at the notion that he didn't have to worry about a stranded traveling kid. He was about to ask more questions when a blinding light burst next to them.
Walking out of a swirling vortex of colors a blue stranger comes out with a trumpet in his hand.
"Jericho, how many times have I told you and Kid not to travel without my permission. I just pulled Wally out of a world where everyone was a toilet." He scolded.
Joey just swayed back and forth on heels before skipping away to the portal patting the musician's arm. Peering over his shoulder he shouted happily, "Hope to talk to you again Steven Universe!"
And then he hopped through the Herald following behind in disbelief.
"Since when can you speak?!"
They both disappeared and Steven was left standing under the stars.
Looking up at the sky the corners of his mouth rose.
"Hope to talk to you again too Joey!"
