"Why the hell are we going here?" I asked, grimacing.
"Because! We're going to join the country club!" Jack said, cheerfully, bounding out of the car. I looked at him, wondering whether he was truly sane.
"And…why are we joining the country club?" I asked, looking wistfully at the car.
"Because Starr goes to this club!" Jack sighed, sounding like a lovesick puppy. My shoulders tensed, and I shut my eyes so that he wouldn't see me rolling them.
Starr. I should have guessed. Jack's got a humongous crush on her. She's a stuck-up prep, but hey, that's just my opinion.
"Okay, but why do I have to join the bloody country club?" I asked, bitterly. "I'm not trying to impress that prick." Jack frowned, sternly at me.
"Don't talk about Starr like that. She's wonderful," Jack sighed.
"You know, there's a song called 'Wonderful,'" I said, grinning. Jack looked interested.
"Yeah?"
"Yup. It's about a liar." I couldn't resist. Jack glared at me.
"Wizard, if you're gonna be like this, you can go home. No one dragged you here," Jack said, irritably. I scowled.
"Actually, Cowboy, you dragged me here, and I can't go home, because I can't drive!"
It hurt that he'd said that. I've been there for him for five years. Starr showed up at out school last month.
Yeah. He's liked her a month, and he's already joining the country club.
Seriously pissed off, I followed Jack into the country club. Big shocker that it took 0.7 seconds for him to find Starr. He hurried off to have a flirtfest, and I, completely forgotten by my best friend, went to sit in a random corner.
Apparently, the country club was having some kind of party, or something, because music started playing, and people began to dance.
Second big shocker: Jack is dancing with Starr…to a slow song. They seemed to be having a serious conversation. Her eyes locked with mine for a second, and I figured I knew what they were talking about: 'If this is gonna work, you can't hang out with her anymore…She's a freak…et cetera, et cetera, et cetera…'
Jack tore away, looking stunned. I rolled my eyes and waited to see which girl he'd pick, though, considering what he had said earlier, I had a fair guess.
"Do you like me?" I jumped a foot in the air and looked up to see Jack standing over me. I frowned.
"You're my best friend. I'm not going to let one moment of pissed-off-edness make us instant enemies." I paused. "I could market that: Instant Enemy."
"No, no," Jack said, impatiently. "I mean, do you like me?" My mouth formed a rather surprised 'O' as I realized just what I was being asked.
"Um, I…" I trailed off and began blushing, profusely.
"I need an upright answer, Wizard," he ordered. I sighed, saying nothing. He squatted down in front of me, looking me straight in the eye.
"Curse your beautiful eyes," I muttered, not realizing I had said it aloud. He grabbed my hands and pulled me out of my chair.
"Come on," he said, pulling me onto the dance floor.
"What!" I nearly shrieked. He spun me around, into his arms. "Jack what're you—"
I stopped talking. I had a slight hindrance.
Not that I minded.
