The PHANTOM looks at the monkey musical box and listens.
PHANTOM (to the musical box)
Masquerade... Paper faces on parade... Masquerade... Hide your face, so the world will never find you...
He turns and sees CHRISTINE standing at the bedroom door. His look is of immense longing and helplessness.
PHANTOM (whispered)
Christine, I love you...
She fingers the ring on her left hand. Her look is as though a thought has suddenly occurred to her.
CHRISTINE (tentivly approaching)
I can be your freedom... I can be your light...
She kneels in front of him and caresses the disfigured side of his face. He places a hand over hers and brushes his fingers over the ring. Her eyes are glistening with tears of pity, and perhaps something else...
CHRITINE
Just say you love me every waking moment, Say those words and I will follow you...
BOTH (the PHANTOM almost disbelieving)
Share each day with me, Each night, Each morning...
PHANTOM (hopefully)
Say you love me...
CHRISTINE
(sung) I swear, (whispered) I do...
BOTH (leaning closer together)
Love me – that's all I ask of you...
They kiss. We turn to see RAOUL watching brokenheartedly, but CHRISTINE does not turn back to him. He slowly poles the boat away. The PHANTOM and CHRISTINE draw back. Both have tears sliding down their cheeks, but are smiling. The sound of the MOB approaching draws them from their revere, and finally noticing the flames from the burning opera house above falling around them, the PHANTOM takes CHRISTINE'S hand and runs down to the mirrors.
PHANTOM (as he's running)
Let the dream begin! Let our voices join within!
He picks up a heavy object and smashes all the mirrors, the act symbolizing the demise of his torture and the end of his solitude. He draws aside a curtain which was covering another, larger mirror and shatters it as well revealing a hidden passage way.
PHANTOM (looking at CHRISTINE)
You alone can make my song take flight...
CHRISTINE'S look is of immense happiness and anticipation. She entwines their arms.
BOTH
Together we can make the music come to life...
The PHANTOM lifts her into his arms and carries her over the shattered glass. The curtain is closed behind them. We turn and see the PHANTOM'S white mask lying forgotten on a table as the music box next to it plays on.
