Whenever You Call
She watched as he sat looking into the fireplace, an amber glow upon his face from the dancing flames. He'd been like this for hours. Ever since he'd heard out the Olympic tryouts. It seemed his head and his heart we telling him two different things. Sighing he looked over at her with tears in his eyes.
"She wanted this, I did to at some point. But with out her, it just doesn't seem worth it, you know." She nodded showing she understood. She'd learned a long time ago to just let him vent.
"But with my dad losing his job, Atlanta would be a good choice financially." He sighed and got up sitting next to her on the couch. "I think we shouldn't see each other anymore."
She sat there shocked, "What?"
"I think we shouldn't…"
"I heard what you said, but why?" She asked placing a hand on his shoulder. He closed his eyes as he ran his hands over his face.
"I'm not in a good place right now Joelle. I have so many thing I have to work out, so many things I have to do… for myself before I can focus on someone else."
She nodded and looked away. "We've had this conversation before, and you know where I stand. So when you're ready, give me a call, okay?" She got up, placed a kiss on his cheek before turning and leaving him.
She laughed as she tired to keep her balance. As much as she loved hockey ice skating wasn't one of the things she was best at. She tugged at the jersey she wore to keep it off of her neck, and then pushed the helmet up to keep from falling over her eyes.
"You know, this is killing me." She said pushing the helmet up once again. She said causing Jimmy to snap out of his trance.
"I'm sorry I don't have any smaller ones for you." He said laughing at the picture she made. She was practically drowning in his gear. "If you'd like you can do it without the pads and stuff, if you'd prefer being knocked into the boards, and falling on the ice without any protection. Then by all means take it off." He playfully winked at her.
"Shut up…" She said chuckling as she skated towards the other side of the rink.
She kept the puck in front of her trying to keep an eye on him at the same time. Just as she thought she had the hang of it, he swooped out of nowhere taking the puck.
"So this is how you hockey players do it, beat people who don't know how to play?" She questioned as she tried to keep her balance.
"Something like that. But it's more like a teaching tool. You know tough love." He said skating towards her.
"I wouldn't expect anything less from a gold medalist."
He took of his glove off and removed her helmet. He tossed it over his shoulder and brought his hand back to her face. "I love you."
"I love you too." She replied moving a bit closer to him. He leaned in slowly and softly pressing his lips against hers. She closed her eyes and sighed as he deepened the kiss.
She was about to wrap her arms around his neck when her legs came out from under her, causing her to fall onto the ice.
"Was it that good?" He asked laughing, he kneeled down in front of her and held out his hand to her.
"You know?" He was laughing so hard that she had to hold on to him to keep from falling again.
"What?"
"Thanks for calling." She said kissing him.
"Thanks for waiting."
