CHAPTER 1: A Very Special Day
It was a typical sunny day in the town of Pontypandy. At Fireman Sam's house, Fireman Sam was getting up. He got showered, dressed, and headed to the calendar on the wall. He saw a fire engine sticker on it, and he knew what it meant.
"It's today! Today is exactly 35 years to the day i first joined the Pontypandy Fire Service." he said proudly. "I can't wait to celebrate it later."
When he arrived at the fire station, he saw Elvis and Penny. "Hi there, Elvis, Penny." he said. "Isn't it a brilliant day?"
"It is?" Elvis said, confused, but then, he remembered. "Ah, yes, Sam, it is!"
"I agree." Sam said. "I think it's a special sort of day today, don't you agree?"
"You're right, Sam." Penny spoke up. "Me and Elvis have to meet the Pontypandy Pioneers in the park later today, Sam, for an emergency fire drill test."
"OK." Sam said. "I'll come too. Always best to have more hands for fire drills, you know."
"Uhhh, thanks for the offer, Sam, but we'll manage." Penny said.
"oh well." Sam sighed. "I'll just see if there's anything Steele needs."
He went to up to Station Officer Steele's office, and saw Steele was on the phone. Upon seeing Sam, Steele quickly hung up, and turned to face Sam as he came in.
"Oh, uh, Sam," Steele flustered. "I didn't know you were there."
"Oh, It's alright, Station Officer Steele,"Sam said. "After all, today is a special day, isn't it, Station Officer Steele?" Sam added, proudly, hoping Steele would remember.
"You're exactly right, Sam; Today IS a special day." Steele said, making Sam proud and happy that Steele knew what day it was.
However, that moment of pride and happiness was short-lived.
"Today is the day Chief Fire Officer Boyce gives his yearly fire-station safety inspection." Steele told him.
"Oh." Sam said, slightly disappointed that it wasn't what he had in mind. "Well, will you need me to help with the inspection?" he asked hopefully. "Thanks for the offer Sam, but we'll manage." Steele said. "Why don't you take the day off today? We'll manage just fine."
'I'm smarter than that,' thought Sam to himself. "Well, OK, Sir." Sam said. "Let me know if you need me."
As he left the office, he sighed. "This is strange. Why does nobody remember what day it is?" he murmured. "Ah well, I'd better go home and get changed to spend a well-earned day off."
Steele, who was watching from the door, waited till Sam had left, then turned back to the phone, and dialled it. "Ah yes, Sorry I hung up on you, Dilys, but I've made sure Sam doesn't know about our party plan."
What plan was Steele making?
