01: Saki Kawasaki.
He wasn't a wide eyed virgin when he met her and it certainly helped his chances. Saki Kawasaki wasn't in the market for pretty little boys. She preferred grown up men who could handle adult conversations. While he had lost his virginity to Tomoko Kuroki, a fellow nineteen year old university student, Kawasaki had dated a man in his mid twenties whom she simply called 'L'. Nowadays the age gap didn't look as massive or significant. Hell, he understood the attraction and benefits of being in a relationship with an older lover. He had loved Shizuka Hiratsuka-sensei. He had loved others who were older.
But back then, when he was a first year university student, a nineteen year old young adult who had his first taste of women, his first real relationship and his first ever heartbreak, he should have known better than to start something new with a woman like her. But he didn't know any better. In high school, he had ruined his chances with Shouko by being timid. She had been the one to initiate things physically. But things hadn't worked out. He hadn't treated her like a woman with sexual desires of her own. He had treated her like a disabled person and it had hurt her in ways he would never come to understand.
With Tomoko things had been different. She was a pervert and he meant it in the nicest way possible. She knew what she wanted and she took it without being asked twice. He liked that about her and to an extent it molded his future preference in women. They had been each other's first and he couldn't have asked for a better partner. Tomoko and he were similar in many ways, but there were a handful of differences as well. It had worked out for the best. They really enjoyed each other's company. But soon they found out this just wasn't it. Tomoko was the one who broached the subject. He just listened to what she said and nodded his head because he had more or less the same feeling.
They were better suited as friends. Both of them knew it. Adding a bit of romance into their relationship was okay at first. The odd and awkward attempts at flirtation and cheesy pick up lines which they threw at each other like bad jokes to get a laugh or a giggle was okay too. And the sex was the best. They had really leant a lot from each other and from online videos which they watched together like the shameless, horny young adults they were. But everything else like going out on dates, it didn't really feel like they were on a date. It felt like they were hanging out as friends. It was okay at first, but over time her heart didn't flutter and neither did he look at her with the eyes of a man who was deeply in love with a woman, whom he intended to marry in the future. He looked at her like he was his best friend who he occasionally had sex with and to an extent he was fine with it. A woman who was fun to be around and good for sex, what else could a man want in his life.
But Tomoko was selfish and she wanted more from her life. It was the one thing he disliked about her and as it turned out, it led to them breaking things off. For once in his life, he wanted things to be not true, but he knew it would end like this. Her selfishness, he had been wary of it from the start and it had cost them a lot. But Tomoko was a smart woman and she knew he liked her more than she liked him and they had a good thing going on, so she didn't want to call it quits quite yet. Despite herself she had grown emotionally attached to him and though she wanted a fair and handsome prince from her fantasy, for the time being she was satisfied with Hachiman Hikigaya.
In the end they made an arrangement. Officially they were breaking up, but they were still the best of friends and wasn't it a friend's duty to look after each other. Yes it was and so they mutually decided that because they were physically compatible and they both enjoyed having sex, they shouldn't just stop sleeping together with each other over the small fact of no longer being in a romantic relationship. It was the first time he fully understood what it meant when people were asked if they were in a relationship and they replied 'it's complicated.'
In a way it wasn't complicated. They weren't boyfriend and girlfriend and now that he thought about it maybe they never were like the typical couple. Sure they loved each other and they shared similar hobbies and in a sense she had been the only woman so far he could see himself being in love with, but that was soon about to change.
He met Saki Kawasaki and for him, she was the one. He didn't believe in destiny or love at first sight, but he thought she was the exception. He fell for her and fell hard and he found himself no longer satisfied with his arrangement with Tomoko. But like a man who didn't want to let go of a good thing, he found himself second guessing. He didn't know what to do. If he told Tomoko he didn't want to sleep with her, she would obviously take it as a rejection and they might not be able to salvage their friendship. He cherished it, he cherished her, but he wanted to move on and he didn't want the blue haired woman to slip from his grasp. He knew he would regret not asking her out, he knew he wouldn't get another chance.
But self doubt was an ugly thing and he didn't have faith in himself or his own good looks to win over a girl. Tomoko went for him because he was a safe bet. She went for him because he was a friend. She stayed with him because it was better than nothing. But now she had called it quits and their relationship had turned into nothing more than two people satisfying each other in bed. She had even said, half jokingly, that if they hadn't been a couple of weird, awkward virgins, they wouldn't have slept with each other and he had laughed because there was some truth to her statement.
But now he was after a woman who seemed out of his league and he had never really talked to her. She wasn't her friend, she didn't knew him and they had only exchanged a handful of conversation after he realized he had fallen for her and even then she had looked at him like there was something wrong with his head. She was a loner, she kept to herself, she didn't talk much and sometimes she missed her classes, but apart from that he knew absolutely nothing about her.
This had to change and it had to start from somewhere small. He knew she smoked cigarettes and he was really liked watching her smoke. He was fascinated by it, the action, the picturesque image, a maiden hidden in a white mist, lost in her own world. Only she wasn't a blushing virgin. She wasn't like Shouko or Tomoko. This was a woman who had her own share of experiences, who had loved and lost and now if everything turned out in his favour she would be taking a chance with him. He didn't know whether she would be willing to take that risk. At best it would be a waste of her time, at worst it would be an awful relationship. But he wasn't going anywhere with her if he didn't ask. He just had to show some courage and talk to her, show her that he was interested in her in a romantic sense.
He wasn't one for making grand romantic gestures and she didn't look like the type to be swiped off her feet, so he went for the traditional pick up line.
"Are you seeing someone?"
"No."
Well, he had given it a fair shot. He couldn't do anything until she asked the follow up question. She had to be interested in him even a little bit or otherwise this wouldn't work out. He watched her smoke with patience, thinking he might suffer from second hand smoke, what with spending time observing her like a creep with a new fetish and his Friday dinners with Shizuka-sensei. At the end he was given something more than a look. It was an eye of interest. However she mistook his intentions completely.
"You want a cigarette?"
"No, I don't smoke."
"Then what do you want, Hikigaya?" She had sounded a bit annoyed and he couldn't really blame her. He was kinda ruining her smoking experience by being his creepy self. "Aren't you in a relationship with Tomoko?"
"We stopped seeing each other recently."
"Bullshit." She glared. "I heard Tomoko brag about her sex life in the woman's bathroom. She was talking about you. Look," she blew out a trail of smoke and took out the cigarette stuck between her lips and trapped it between her fingers. She looked angry and embarrassed about something he didn't quite figure out until she went on to make things clearer. "I don't know what you heard about me, but just because I work as a masseuse, doesn't mean I will be up from a threesome or a swingers party -"
He blushed and held up a hand. "Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold up, I think there is a bit of a miscommunication. I am not interested in you like that."
She hadn't quite believed him. "So you are not trying to get into my pants?"
He had rubbed the back of his neck and looked sideways, unable to meet her pigeon blue eyes. In the end he had gone with the truth, because alas, back then he really didn't know any good pick up lines. "Only after the third date, honest."
"Smart-ass." But she had chuckled and he was enamored with the sound. He wanted to make her laugh, he wanted to make her cry, only to console her and have her in his arms, trapped within the confines of his limited heart and messed up psyche, to treasure each moment, each minute like it was the last, for however long she would allow him, even if it was a second, even if it was a blink of an eye. He wanted her and he thought she should know this because never before had he fallen in love with a woman quite like this. And in his stupidity, he went all in.
"I love you." He had said. "Please go out with me."
Saki Kawasaki hadn't blushed. She hadn't had any outward reaction, though he did see her take a couple of hurried drags from her cigarette to relax her a little bit with his untoward proclamation. He never thought he would say those words to a woman again, in this embarrassing situation and he was immediately reminded of Orimoto. But he shook his head and tried to think of positive thoughts. The worst thing that could happen was she would reject him and call him a creep or a pervert. He could deal with it in time and no doubt news would get back to Tomoko and she would tease him relentlessly. But she would invite him back in her bed, welcome him with open arms and warm kisses and things would go back to how they were before he took this huge risk. In a way he wasn't risking anything and from the looks of it, she caught onto that fact all too well.
"What about Tomoko?"
He wasn't able to meet her eyes. How to explain their relationship without being labeled as a pervert or a creep. Oh, I know, it's rather simple.
"It's complicated."
Saki Kawasaki hadn't looked impressed. She had dropped her finished cigarette on the ground and stepped on it with her heels, extinguishing the small, fickle ambers before meeting his eyes with her steel like gaze. He saw a woman who knew what she wanted, a woman who didn't deal with bullshit and yet still held onto the simple notions of being in love or having a relationship. "I don't do complicated. Either stop sleeping with her or kiss my ass goodbye. I don't share."
So she had a rather possessive streak about her. He knew from what little experience he had that women were prone to jealousy. But he didn't quite felt like testing her. In the end it was a simple decision to make. He didn't even have to think twice. "Okay."
He thought it was prudent not to add that he might still see her as a friend, though he knew Tomoko and him were going to have a serious talk about their current relationship and how she broadcasted about their private sex life. Their current arrangement won't do at all.
"Okay then." Saki Kawasaki had nodded. "See you after three weeks."
He had blinked in utter confusion. "Huh?"
"Well, we can't be together right now. It would be yucky." From her lips the word yucky had a different effect. It sounded really vile, not cute at all and he didn't know how to feel about that, but he had a feeling he would learn soon enough. "End things with Tomoko. Have a little cooling off period of about three weeks and then we will see what happens." She had looked completely serious. "Or am I not worth the wait?"
Three weeks. Three weeks! It was nothing. "See you in three weeks, Kawasaki."
"Idiot." Kawasaki had mumbled. "Of course we will be seeing each other during this time. We just won't be together." She made absolutely no sense and it must have shown on his face, because she had looked worried. "Are you sure you have been in a relationship before? If I didn't hear about Tomoko's sex life as often I would have mistaken you for a virgin."
He hadn't been amused. "I'm not a virgin."
This time she had blushed and he didn't think it was possible for a woman to look this cute. Really, how was he gonna handle three whole weeks without her. Oh right, they were gonna see each other, but it wouldn't be like seeing each other in a romantic sense, if that made any sense at all. But no, he had been more focused at her voice and how she said the next words which confirmed everything, yet nothing, at the same time. She really had a lovely voice when she acted all uncertain and cute. "I know that. Like I said, Tomoko likes to brag."
And at that moment he had never been more prouder of his friend Kuroki Tomoko and her habit to brag about his sex life. This time it had worked in his favour and if he had a little bit of luck and some good fortune, after three weeks he was gonna show Saki Kawasaki how much of it was actual bragging and how much of it was really true.
