Daniel stormed past the closed door to the General's office, wishing Jack hadn't gone on vacation. Then he backtracked and stared, his mouth agape, at the open door to the General's office. "Jack, what're you doing here?" he wondered, entering the room and approaching his friend's desk.
The General shrugged and tiredly held his head in his hands. "Sit down, Daniel; it's a long one." Once the archeologist had done so, he continued. "Yesterday morning, my doorbell rang. When I answered it, I saw this guy who looked like I did ten years ago. Turns out, he's my long-lost brother or something. And here's the kicker: this guy's friend is friends with Hammond. George knows him and thinks it'd be great to have him on SG-1."
Daniel's brows furrowed. "But SG-1…"
"…doesn't need another member, I know," Jack finished. "We'll see what happens; there's no guarantee he'll even want to join."
"I don't know, Jack. It's hard to imagine someone not wanting to."
Jack shrugged. "You didn't come to hear the latest in base gossip. What do you want, Daniel?"
He sighed, shifting gears. "Yesterday, the MALP sent back images of what appeared to be a Goa'uld-occupied world, and it wasn't put on the mission list."
"Standard procedure," Jack pointed out. "So what?"
"Yes, except that if you look closer, the room the gate was in appeared to have been deserted for centuries. Think how much we could learn about the Goa'uld!"
"Like what?"
"The history of the Goa'uld battles between…." he began. Then he noticed the skeptical scowl covering his friend's face and decided a change in tactic might be in good order. "What if the Goa'uld used to have a weapon, and it was somehow lost to them? A really good weapon? My point is we don't know what we will find there unless and until we go there."
Jack sighed, having been swayed by Daniel's advanced weapons argument. "I'll think about it. But if the Goa'uld left, they'd probably have a good reason for it."
"A new ally?"
"You said it's deserted."
"Right. Just saying."
The two sat in silence for a minute while the General fiddled with a pencil. Finally, he dropped it and looked solemnly to Daniel. "I'd like you, Carter, and Teal'c to be there when MacGyver comes back tonight; I'm gonna ask if he wants to join the SGC."
Daniel started, and his eyes widened. "MacGyver?" he repeated, unbelieving. "The man who's saved wildlife, preserved artifacts, and escaped innumerable booby traps?"
"Heard of him?"
"Yeah," the archeologist replied. "I'll be there."
Original text has "unglaublich". Just thought I'd point that out. Argh. You can't put asterisks in.
This was an irresistable one... I've got half of the next chapter written, but they're all going to be short chapters. That way, when I suddenly want to work on something else, I can share everything I have.
