Ji Yeon stood by the window watching as her parents threw a black trash bag into the trash can. She knew what was inside, but she wished she didn't.
She had woken up early that morning to Cleo having puppies. She wished that she had never seem those puppies being born.
She peaked inside into the bathroom where Cleo was laying on a blanket with some tiny, blueish grayish blobs around her. Their legs were all misshapen and backwards. They didn't look like any puppies she had seen before.
Ji Yeon jumped away from the window as her parents came back inside talking.
''We have to get Cleo fixed.'' Mi Sun said.
''We should've gotten her fixed a couple of years ago.'' Jin remarked.
Ji Yeon was confused as she watched Cleo go about her day doing all of the normal things that she usually would.
Ji Yeon picked up her tablet and decided to call Dil seeing as he had had dogs all his life. Surely he would have the answeres.
Dil's picture appeared a few seconds later.
''Hey Ji. What's up?'' Dil greeted using the nickname he had given her, because it was easier for him to pronounce.
''Cleo has to get fixed.'' Ji Yeon explained.''I think she's broked.''
''When one of my toys gets broked my daddy fixes it.'' Dil told her.
''Cleo doesn't looked broker though.'' Ji Yeon said as Cleo jumped up onto the couch beside her.
Ji Yeon then had a thought.''Her puppies came out all not moving and they didn't look like puppies are supposed to.''
''Maybe the puppies broked Cleo and you just can't see it.'' Dil advised.
''Maybe.'' Ji Yeon agreed petting Cleo's head.
The next day Cleo went to the vet while Ji Yeon was at daycare. She arrived home later that day to find Cleo laying on her bed with a plastic cone around her neck.
Why does Cleo have that thing on her?'' Ji Yeon asked her mother.
''She got fixed today, which means that she can't have puppies again.'' Mi Sun explained.''She has to wear the cone so she doesn't mess with her stitches.''
Ji Yeon was sad. The vet didn't fix Cleo at all. They just broke her more.
The weekend came and Ji Yeon and Dil were sitting on the couch watching a movie. Ji Yeon looked into the kitchen and saw her mother hand feeding Cleo.
''See, Cleo can't even eat by herself no mores. She even drinks water out of a cup.'' Ji Yeon told Dil as she pointed to the kitchen.
''Why does she drink out of a cup?'' Dil asked.
''Cuz the cone thingy gets in her way.''Ji Yeon answered.
''Why don't we just take it off so then she won't be broked no mores.'' Dil suggested.
''Maybe.'' Ji Yeon thought. She remembered that Cleo had to wear the cone so she wouldn't mess with her stitches,but it had been awhile since her vet visit so Ji Yeon figured it would be ok if they took off Cleo's cone. After all her mother hadn't said how long Cleo had to wear it.
Ji Yeon and Dil waited until Cleo was let outside before sneaking out into the backyard. They found Cleo laying in the sun and got to work removing the cone.
Dil got it off and threw it in a corner of the yard. Cleo chased after it and began chewing on it.
The kids went back inside before they were caught and waited to see if removing the cone had made Cleo any better.
MI Sun wasn't to happy to see Cleo without her cone. She went outside after letting Cleo inside to try and find the cone and avoid another trip to the vet. She eventually found it hanging off of a broken branch in the yard. It had a few holes and was useless now, so Mi Sun threw it in the trash figuring that Cleo had caught it on the branch and had gotten free on her own.
Ji Yeon was excited as Cleo ran inside and jumped into her lap and kicked her all over her face, something that Cleo hadn't been able to do all week due to the cone.
The next morning Cleo refused to eat and her stomach was swollen.
''Taking the cone off worked.'' Ji Yeon whispered happily to Dil as they ate their breakfast.''It looks like Cleo is going to have more puppies.''
''We fixed her.'' Dil cheered quietly.
''Hiw did Cleo get so fat so fast?'' Min Jun asked as he walked into the kitchen.
MI Sun turned away from the stove and noticed Cleo's swollen stomach as she lay on the floor.
''Everyome hurry up and eat breakfast. We have to take Cleo back to the vet.'' Mi Sun ordered.
''No.'' Ji Yeon cried rushing to Cleo's side.
''We have to so the vet can make her better.'' Mi Sun told her.
''No.'' Ji Yeon yelled and grabbed Cleo and took off down the hallway.
MI Sun chased Ji Yeon down the hall and into her bedroom.
Ji Yeon dove under the bed and tried to get Cleo to come with her, but Cleo wouldn't move.
MI Sun knelt down next to the bed and leaned down so she could see Ji Yeon's face.
''Why don't you want Cleo to go to the vet?'' She asked.
Ji Yeon slowly came out from under the bed and crawled into Mi Sun's lap. She buried her face in Mi Sun's chest before mumbling a soft reply.
''Cleo got breaked at the vet.''
''She's not broke. The vet just made it where she cannot have puppies anymore. The vet helps animals feel better.'' Mi Sun explained giving Ji Yeon a hug.
''But why does Cloe look like she has babies inside her?'' Ji Yeon asked pulling away from her mother and staring at Cleo.
''That's why we have to take her to the vet. She can't have puppies anymore so something is wrong with her.'' Mi Sun said getting to her feet and walking out of the room still holding Ji Yeon in case she tried to run away again. Cleo followed obediently behind and everyone got in the car and headed for the vet.
Ji Yeon sat nervously fidgeting in her mother's lap as Cleo was taken away for x rays. The vet was an old bald man who seemed nice, but Ji Yeon still wasn't sure if she trusted the vet yet.
''She has plastic in her stomach.'' The vet told them as he brought Cleo back into the exam room.
MI Sun remembered the cone and figured that that was how Cleo had gotten plastic inside her.
''It's blocking her intestines so we'll go in and remove it and she'll be good as new.'' the vet concluded.
Cleo was taken back fir surgery a few minutes later. Ji Yeon was more nervous then before. What if the vet broke Cleo even more?
''She's going to be ok.'' Mi Sun assured Ji Yeon as she pulled her close.''It's just like when you had and me had surgery. We came out ok.''
Ji Yeon nodded and leaned into her mother.
''She'll be ok.'' Dil said holding Ji Yeon's hand.''I think we might have broked her when we talked off the cone. Otherwise she wouldn't need to be fixed again.''
''So vets only fix animals not break them?'' Ji Yeon asked.
''I think so.'' Dil shrugged.
Cleo was allowed to return home after surgery with strict instructions to rest for a few days. Ji Yeon sat by Cleo's side the whole time making sure nothing happened to her.
A few weeks later Cleo had to go back to the vet for a checkup. Ji Yeon was once again nervous, but knew hiding and running were not going to do any good.
''She's all good.'' Thr vet assured Mi Sun and Ji Yeon patting Cleo on the back.
Ji Yein smiked and hugged Cleo as they made their way home. She now knew that vets were doctors for animals and fixed them when they were broken.
