Chapter 3

Camille had woken from her sleep sooner than expected and was standing close to the front door of the compound. Klaus flashed there in seconds, finding her holding a box in one hand and a letter in another. She was clearly shocked.

"Cami, love, what's wrong?" Klaus asked her, worried.

"A tourist, I think that he was compelled, left them at the door." Camille said, handing the box and the letter to Klaus.

Klaus looked in the box and found a heart in it. Then he read the letter.

Dearest friends,

Please find enclosed the heart of Jackson.

Hayley's will follow unless you meet me at Coltrane's Autoshop

Kind Regards,

Tristan de Martel

Klaus couldn't help but sigh in relief that it wasn't the mother of his child whose heart was in the box. He liked Jackson, he had just saved Freya from a sure death but they weren't by any means friends. Still, Hayley must be heartbroken, he thought.

"That's just lovely, isn't it. It's Jackson's heart." Klaus said to everyone, handing the box and the letter to Elijah.

Elijah read the note and started to bolt, when Klaus stopped him. "Brother, you just said to be rational, then please be rational about it."

"It's Hayley, Niklaus, I have to go."

"Not alone, you are not. And we need a plan. It has a trap written all over it."

"Okay, we have two originals and two powerful witches if we can call Vincent for help. I like those odds against two vampires." Klaus continued, smiling.

"And one baby vampire on your side," Caroline chimed in.

"No, I can't ask you to help with this." Klaus said to her.

"I insist. You helped me and now I want to help you get your baby's mother back."

"Okay," Klaus reluctantly agreed.

"But the Martels have the advantage right now. They have the serraterra AND Hayley." Freya said.

"So, maybe it's time we get the advantage back." Caroline said, clearly with a plan.

"What do you have in mind?" Klaus asked.

"We'll have to take something important for that Tristan guy…" Caroline answered Klaus, leaving the rest for him to figure out.

"Aurora…" Klaus figured out what Caroline tried to say.

"Yes, we'll kidnap her and then a simple prisoner swap" Caroline declared her plan.

"No we don't swap them. We can lock Tristan away with a serraterra and then decide what to do with Aurora later." Freya came up with a plan of her own.

"And how to we do that, dear sister."

"We'll make Tristan believe that it's her sister in a cargo container, for example. Then you just drop it to the ocean, like they did with Rebekah."

"Ok, that's some magic. You'll need Vincent for that. What else?" Klaus asked

"As serraterra locks only supernatural creatures in the room, we need a human being that I can mask to look like Aurora."

"You want me to compel someone off the streets for that?" Klaus asked his sister, confused.

"I was thinking more that it would be better to use…"

"Me." Camille, who had been quiet until then, ended Freya's sentence.

"Do we really need to use her, If I can compe someone-"

"No, I want to do this, Klaus. For Hayley, who I consider to be a friend."

"Okay, I guess we can minimise the risks for you, sweetheart."

At that Caroline flinched. She shouldn't be jealous, she knew it. But she couldn't help it.

"Caroline, are you still up for the first part of the plan, kidnapping Aurora, with Elijah, while me, Freya and Camille go to prepare for the second part.?"

"Yes, of course."

"Okay, then Freya, you need to be near the container for the spell to work, right?"

"No I can to it from here. I just need to be on the phone with you to know when exactly it goes down"

"Then first locate Aurora and then we all know our assignments. Let's go."

They had compelled a container for the lockdown, Klaus was just in the middle of tying Camille to a chair inside the container.

"Sweetheart, I wanted to talk about that thing you said earlier about you being Caroline's substitute. Where did that come from?"

"Just that the her resemblance to me is striking and I wonder…if you chased after her just before coming to New Orleans and then meeting me, maybe-"

"No, Cami, it isn't like that. Yes when I came here, I was still in love with her. But all the while I was here, I was healed of that. YOU helped to get over her. Your friendship and love. Now I can assure you that I am not in love with her anymore. But I care about her a lot. Is that a problem for you?" he asked her gently.

"No, as long as you are not in love with her anymore?"

"I'm not,"

Then after a minute she declared, "I like her. She's not crazy like Aurora and she really Is a force to be reckoned with".

Klaus just smiled at her. It's so like Camille to find the good in people. "Just don't become friends with her. She'll be leaving after we take care of this mess. She's going back to her children and their father. I just got a word that-"

"Wait, children? I thought that she was vampire and they can't have children. Or was she a mom before becoming one."

"No, she was a 17 year old high school student at the time. Her twins are another story that we don't have time right now. I already hear Elijah coming."

"Where's Caroline?" Klaus asked his brother upon seeing him alone.

"She stayed with Aurora. Someone has to keep an eye on her."

Their plan went through with out a hitch. Tristan was locked in the container, most of his hired vampires were taken out. And Klaus and Elijah compelled to have the container sunk at the bottom of the ocean in an arbitrary location. They didn't even want to know where it was.

"Are you ready?" Klaus asked Caroline, leaning against the door frame to her room.

"Yes, almost." Caroline answered, smiling, "Before I go, I just want to say that I am so happy for you, Klaus. That you found your happiness. Not that you care, but I like her. She's fierce and smart and so pretty. I really hope you'll be happy with her."

"Thank you, Caroline." And he went to grab her suitcase.

And they went downstairs together to Caroline's car. When he had put her suitcase in the back and she was seated in the driver seat he said his goodbye to her. "I hope everything works out for you too. With Alaric and the babies and Stefan."

"I'm sure it will"

"Goodbye, Caroline."

Then he closed the door and she drove off.

Two months later. Camille was living with the Mikealsons and was still working at Rousseau's.

Camille smiled when she saw her favorite person come in to the bar during a slow night.

"Hi, honey, what are you doing here?"

"Just wanted to see you." Klaus answered, giving her a kiss on the lips over the counter.

"Missed me already? I was at home couple of hours ago."

"And that's too long to live without seeing you"

"Oh, Klaus, you are thousand years old, isn't couple of hours like a minute for you?"

"Not without you, love."

"Okay, it's a slow night, I'll call the manager and see if I can leave early. Then we can do something."

" Til then. A glass of bourbon for you boyfriend?"

"Sure. Have you seen him. Is he here?"

"Very funny, Cami." He smiled

"I think so, too" She smiled back.

Then his phone buzzed and he groaned, seeing the name "Alaric Saltzman" on the display.

"What the bloody hell does he want," he said to himself.

"Yes." He answered the call.

"Klaus, I need your help. It's Caroline." Alaric pleaded with him.

"What is it?"

"She's utterly depressed. I don't have any ideas what to do anymore. The doctor gave her pills but they are not working. I don't know what to do anymore."

"Slow down. Start from the beginning, why is so depressed`?"

"It's Stefan Salvatore."

Klaus closed his eyes for a second in frustration, "Of course it is. What did he do now?"

"He left her. Went to the the philippines or where ever with that heretic Valerie. Left Caroline totally heart broken. She's been like this for almost two months."

"Wait, let me get this straight. Stefan left Caroline for another woman?"

"Yes, Valerie was his first love or whatever."

"Bloody hell," Klaus muttered to himself. I turns out he was right, but he didn't want to be right. "And what am I suppose to do. I'm not a a psychiatrist."

"I was thinking that you could compel her. Or maybe just talk to her first. I don't support it, but you have a special relationship with her and maybe you can influence her to get it together for her children. If that doesn't work, then compulsion has to."

"I'm not going to compel Caroline. I have never done it to her and I never will."

"Klaus, please, I desperate. You know I wouldn't call you if I wasn't. The girls need their mother."

He was right, Klaus thought. Alaric Saltzman would never otherwise invite him to their home if it wasn't an emergency.

"Okay, text me your address. You are still living in mystic falls?"

"No, we live in Dallas now."

"Okay, whatever, I'll get on the first plane out. Just text me your home address."

Then Klaus shut his phone and called for Camille who was talking to a client.

"Sweetheart, what do you think about Dallas? Ever been there?"

"No, what's in Dallas?" she asked, confused.

"Camille, do you remember Caroline?"

"Sure, I do, Blonde, perky, has thing for you. How could I forget…"

"Well, you told me that you liked her and now she needs your help."

"My help?" Camille frowned, "How could I help her?"

"Well, you are pretty good psychologist and she's utterly depressed right now. She needs someone like that to talk to."

"I don't think that's a good idea, Klaus."

"Cami, please, just come to Dallas with me, tonight, and If you can't help, maybe I'll have to compel her to get herself together. But I don't want to do that before I've exhausted all other options."

"Wait, you can compel another vampire?"

"Yes, only us, the originals can do it."

"Okay, I'll do it, but only because I know how it feels to be compelled."

"Thank you."

After they had checked in to a hotel, Klaus and Camille went to see the patient.

"Hello, Klaus." Alaric greeted Klaus not too happily. "Who's that?"

"That would be the psychologist and my girlfriend, Camille."

"Cami, please." She said to Alaric, as she smiled and shook hands with Alaric.

"Cami, please come in." Alaric invited her in. "And you! Before I invite you into my home, you need to promise no tricks, no temper tantrums and so on."

"I swear, Alaric" he gritted through his teeth.

"Ok, then Come in, Klaus."

So they both stepped into the house and they gathered in the kitchen.

Caroline's and Alaric's babies were now 6 months old and they were playing in the bassinet.

"Omg, these are the twins, right?" Cami gushed.

"Yes, that's Lizzie and Josie." Alaric answered the woman, smiling.

"Oh, they are lovely."

"Okay, let's get on with it." Klaus interrupted them, "So, Caroline. Where is she?"

"Upstairs, in the master bedroom. In the bed. I haven't told her yet, that you are coming."

"Okay, I think Cami should go first and try to talk to her."

"No, Klaus, you should be the first one she sees." Camille told Klaus.

"You sure?"

"Yes. Definitely."

"Okay."

The bedroom was dark, the curtains were pulled so that no sunlight could come in.

"Caroline, love, are you up?"

"Klaus, what are you doing here?" Caroline asked and turned her back towards him, pulling the blanket over her head.

Klaus sat on the bed next to her and pulled the blanket off of her head.

"Come on, love, you know why I'm here."

"Oh, yes, Alaric must desperate, if he invited the Big Bad Wolf to his home."

Klaus chuckled. "Oh, yes, he really is. Talk to me, Caroline. What's going on? Alaric tells me that you sleep all day and barely eat anything and hardly spend time with your daughters."

"If you are here, then that means Alaric already told you."

"I want to hear your side of it."

"My side is that Stefan left me with no explanation besides a message "I can't do this anymore" And Elena received a post card from the Philippines a week ago. So he's having the time of his life with Valerie, his first love."

"Okay, but you are not the kind of woman to becomes depressed over some guy who's not worth it."

"Well, apparently I am. Would you just go. I don't want to talk to anyone. Especially people that are in a happy place."

"Not a chance. I even brought some reinforcements. And you are going to talk to her. And if she doesn't get through to you, then you know what I'll do."

After hearing the last sentence, Caroline sat up, surprised, "You would compel me?"

"Yes, Ok, then please do that. Please make me forget about him."

"I can't make you forget him as you two are linked through your friends in Mystic Falls. To make you forget Stefan Salvatore, then I would have to make you forget about Damon, Elena, Matt, Bonnie, all your friends at Mystic fall."

"But you can make me forget my feelings for him. Alaric did that for Elena when we thought Damon was dead. You can do the same for me."

"I don't want to violate your mind like that, Caroline."

"Ugh," Caroline sighed and fell back on the bed, " You are such a softie. When did you become such a softie?"

"I think I'm to blame for that,"

Caroline recognized the voice instantly. It was Klaus' girlfriend Camille.

"Camille, you here! In my bedroom. With Klaus."

Camille chuckled. "Yes, I came with Klaus. He thought we could have a woman to woman talk."

"I really am not in the mood."

"Well, you don't have a choice in the matter until you are staying in this bed." Klaus said and left the room.

"So, anything?" Alaric asked Klaus as he came down the stairs.

"Well, she wants to be compelled. She said that you had done it for Elena in the past."

"And Caroline knows how it blew up in her face in the end."

"Well, I tend to agree and I don't want to do it but what choice is there. She can't stay like that."

Camille had talked to Caroline for about 15 minutes before they heard Caroline yell. "Get out. Get out now. Or I'll eat you for lunch."

And Camille came down the stairs and met them in the kitchen.

"What was that all about?" Alaric asked Camille.

"Well, I tried to psycho analyse her life and I guess she didn't like what I had to say."

"And what did you say to her?" Klaus asked.

"I told her that it must have been hard for Stefan to see her with a family of her own when he couldn't have children he could give her and that beehive family isn't for everybody. That Stefan probably thought he did her a favor."

"Well, yes, Caroline doesn't want to see Stefan in a bad light. Any of her friends for that matter. It's a disease," Klaus chuckled. "I will do what I have to do."

"Okay, what do you want me to tell you , while I compel you." Klaus asked Caroline.

"Just make me forget the good things about him. That he loved Valerie more than me and that's why he left."

"Okay, If that's what you really want."

"I do."

Caroline sat on the bed and Klaus grabbed her by the arms and looked deep in her eyes.

"Caroline, you are not in love with Stefan Salvatore. He left Mystic Falls and you behind because he loves Valerie so much. You are happy for him and don't miss him. He was never there for you as a friend. You barely knew him. You are Caroline Forbes who raises her children no matter what bad happens to you in life and you are happy with the life you have now."

Caroline blinked for a second and then smiled and hugged Klaus. "What are you doing here, Klaus?"

"Omg, you are here and I'm in my night gown and it stinks. I have to get in the shower now."

"Okay, then I'll leave knowing that you are alright."

"I'm great. I feel like I have so much energy and there's so much I want to do. Goodbye, Klaus. Nice of you to visit."

"Bye, Caroline." And he gave her a kiss on the cheek.
