"What are you thankful for?"
It was a question Cedric had heard many times throughout his life. Especially during this time of year. When the fading flowers, and soon to be barren land had a habit of reminding folks of just how transient their own blessings could be; and of how important it was to recognize and appreciate them, while you still could.
But as for the sorcerer...
'Nothing.' would always come the curt reply only spoken in his head. After all, what in all the Ever Realm did he have to be grateful for?! Nearly all in his society considered him a useless bungler. Those whom he had thought were his friends had abandoned him; and even members of his own family had taken to looking down on him.
Of course, in reality it wasn't as bleak as his mind liked to convince. There were still those, however few, who cared about, and saw greatness in him. But with his eyes clouded by the jeering cruelty of that other vast majority...well...it was near impossible to see those precious ones clearly, or even at all.
That was, until she came along...
She should have been no consequence in the world; and looking back, there were times he feared that if not for her amulet, he never would have paid her any mind at all. Though now he could definitely say he was grateful that that wasn't the path their fates took.
She was different from the others. Despite witnessing his failures multiple times she still looked up to him, and saw him as a great sorcerer. She never belittled or talked ill of him, and always seemed happy to be in his presence. Even her continuing habit of referring to him as "Mr." seemed to reflect the level of respect she held for him.
On a conscious level, he hardly noticed the effect she was beginning to have on him. But deep within, her kindness was slowly wittingly away at the darkness both inside his heart, and around him. As she continually sought to bring more good into his life; and even open his eyes to what was already right there in front of him.
So subtle was her influence that he hardly even noticed it. Until that fateful day when he finally realized that her friendship was the most important thing to him. Even more so than his previous highest desire of taking over the kingdom; and he vowed that day to be a true friend to her in return ever onward.
And while he knew he didn't deserve it, despite his wickedness she continued to offer him her love and friendship as well; and such mutual kindness changed the course of both their lives...and even over the years (much to his surprise,) their relationship.
"Cedric!"
He heard her melodious voice calling his name, and smiled. Looking to see her eagerly heading his way, still dressed in her Protector ensemble. Having just returned from a mission.
She greeted him with a kiss on the cheek and asked, "What are you doing out here?"
"Oh, just thinking..."
"About what?" Gasping when she felt him pull her close.
"Just how thankful I am to have you."
She sighed contentedly, "Oh Cedric," snuggling into him. "I'm grateful for you too."
He squeezed her tighter once more, then pulled away, smiling. "Come on, let's get inside." Returning arm in arm with her into the castle.
