This was a poem that I wrote for a creative writing contest in English. It is inspired by themes in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird.
Disclaimer: I do not own the most wonderful work of To Kill a Mockingbird. That belongs to Harper Lee.
Mockingbird
The cry of the mockingbird fills the air,
So clear and harsh, but no one will respond.
And it continues. Heads will turn, and look.
And people will search for the mockingbird;
High and low they will look, but they will not
Encounter it. The cry is stronger now.
And on they will hunt for the mockingbird.
They will not find it. For in looking 'round
They will forget to look inside their home.
And they will fail to see the mockingbird
Is their brother, their sister, and themselves.
And still it cries for aid. Still will they search,
Not finding it but knowing that it is
Always there and ever in their lives.
And maybe they will find the mockingbird.
It will be dead and they will be too late,
Too late to save it because they will have
Ignored it for too long, searching but not.
Brother, sister, and themselves will perish.
The cry of the mockingbird fills the air.
