Notes: The title of this poem was inspired by Meggie's dress in "The Thornbirds" - a series I'll never watch again, btw. I think the poem itself might be Rogue's musings on Logan's reaction to Jean's death in X2, reflecting my personal opinion that he had no right to mourn her. Scott - yes. But not Logan, not at that point. To quote Aragorn, "What you love is but a thought and a shadow."
She was always.
i was never.
And when the wall came down,
I guess I was the one standing
in the dust and rubble
of your life together.
…Except you never had one
and I was always with you instead.
You were chasing a rose reflection –
I think it was easier to touch
a glassy image and imaginary petals
than to reckon with the thorns of real
and every day life.
…But now that it's turned to ash you hold it in your hands
and you won't let go.
