In the Secret

Rose slip into the room watching the shadows from her candle flitter across the wall. Why was she here again? Every day she came, and everyday she left exactly the same. Nothing life altering, not even anything to make her want to return. Yet, every night she was here.

She ghosted across the room, her bare feet making no sound on the cold stone of the floor. She lifted the candle to her face and blew it out. She placed it on the small table beside the window, making her way by moonlight to the window seat.

She sat quietly, staring out at the lake. Her breathe was deep and even, calm radiating out of every pore. She drew her knees up to her chest and leaned back against the wall.

She gasped lightly, stiffening at the flash of cold that attacked her skin through the thin night gown she wore. She slowly relaxed again as the stone soaked up heat from her body, bringing them to a comfortable temperature. She watched as the wind threw the golden leaves of fall in swirling patterns through the air. She continued to watch their dance even as she heard the door open.

Finally she turned slowly to look at the intruder on her calm sanctuary. His blonde hair shone in the moonlight, highlighted by the dark grey clothing he wore.

He looked almost like a ghost, fading in and out of the surroundings as he moved. His eyes were the only thing that convinced her that he was truly there. The blue orbs bore into hers, sending a subtle shudder up her spine.

She could see the surprise and confusion in them, though it was masked carefully by a layer of disinterest.

She listened, her eyes still locked with his, to the small thump of each footstep as he walked closer. Finally, he stood directly beside her. He extended a hand cautiously.

She stared at it for a long moment, before slowly sliding hers into it. She stood as he pulled her to him.

She buried her face in his shoulder, breathing deeply. He smelled as he always used to, of mint, October wind, and something she couldn't name.

They stood, time freezing around them. They were lost in the memories of each other. Neither moved, terrified of losing the precious calm that they had captured.

Finally, she pulled away only slightly looking up into his face. His eyes locked with hers again. She stared into their depths searching for the look that she remembered. She searched for the longing, the love, the acceptance. She couldn't see anything, not even disinterest. She swallowed hard.

"I miss you," she whispered, her voice cracking with lack of use. She gasped as the emotions flooded his eyes. All that she had searched for and more sped past leaving her breathless.

"I miss you too," he murmured. One of his hands cupped the side of her face. She leaned into it, closing her eyes in bliss.

Suddenly his lips were on hers. Electricity flew though her veins, causing her to shudder involuntarily. As he pulled away she continued to shake slightly. She could feel him doing the same. She smiled weakly at him.

"I hate you Draco," she whispered before falling back into his warm embrace.

"I hate you too, my love."
