Sweet Uncertainty - Chapter 4

----

"Adam, listen, I've been thinking alot about what you said..." Joans voice was shaking from her previous crying as she spoke into the telephone.

"I say alot of things, Jane" Adam replied, trying to apologize for his recent outburst.

"I mean about the keeping secrets, and you're right... I shouldn't keep things from you... not anymore..."

"Jane, I'm sorry for what I said, your secrets are your secrets, they're what make you who you are"

"But they aren't who I want to be, Adam"

"Cha, Jane, secrets wouldn't be secrets if we we're proud of them"

"The point is... ever since September, when school started I've been..." Joans rambling had been interupted by a loud beep through her ear peice. "Damn call waiting, hold on Adam" she stated, switching lines.

"Hello?"

"Ah, Miss Girardi, just who I was looking for"

"Mr. Price?"

"Don't sound to thrilled. It's my job to inform you that there has been an opening in the night school classes and you will be starting Monday at 6pm"

"Wonderfull" Joan rolled her eyes... 'Just wonderfull' she thought 'there goes my free time'.

"Goodbye Miss Girardi"

"See-ya" Joan switched back over to Adam.

"What was that about?" he asked.

"My lifes ending, no big deal"

"Night school, huh?"

"Yup. Listen Adam, I have to go, I'll talk to you later"

"Night Jane"

----------

Saturday morning. Possibly the only free time Joan would ever get for a very long time. She had decided that today, starting at this very moment, she would make use of this oportunity. After a breif call to Grace and a semi longer conversation with Adam, the three met up out front of the Girardi household.

"So what's the plan, Girardi?" Grace questioned.

"Shopping... Arcadia Mall... then... Club Teen"

"Club Teen... no problem... Arcadia Mall... no way"

"Grace" Joan shot her friend an evil glare "I want to go shoping!"

"Alright, alright"

Adam stood in silence, following the dialog as best he could. When he noticed the two girls begin walking to the car, he decided they must have agreed upon going to the mall.

"Shotgun" he called, jumping in the front seat.

----------

Surprisingly for a Saturday the mall hadn't been over crowded. A few scattered people here and there, but nobody that the three could recognize. Joan grabbed onto her friends, dragging them down the walkway and into 'forever 21'.

"I said I would come to the mall with you Girardi, I didn't say I'd go into a girlie store" Grace complained, tugging away from Joans grip.

"Chill out Grace, I need a dress for tonight" Joan stated, running her fingers down the fabric of the beautiful red satin dress that hang infront of her. "and I think I found one"

"No way, Jane" Adam finaly spoke up. He didn't want his pregnant girlfriend out galavanting around in a dress made of barly any cloth what-so-ever. Even if he was with her.

"What you don't think it's pretty?" she turned to face him, gripping the dress in her arms.

"No, Jane, it's pretty... pretty for you and me... not pretty for you and a thousand guys at club teen"

"Adam, I want it, and I'm getting it."

Adam sighed, walking out of the store with Grace as Joan made the purchase.

'I'm just going to make her happy for now' Adam told himself 'She'll come around soon'. He wanted so much to believe his Jane was alright, but more and more Joan had been seemingly becoming out of touch with reality. It was as if she were in her own little world and did not care to come back and join them.

"Alright, my turn to go shoping" Grace claimed, walking into 'Spencers Gifts'. Joan and Adam followed close behind. Although they had been in this store many times before, they both knew it was more suited for Grace, and neither wanted to interupt her as she browsed the stock.

"Look!" She screamed over the music "The perfect gift" Grace held up strawberry sex wax in a kit with a neon pink vibrater and chocolate whip cream... "Just add handcuffs" she laughed.

Joan couldn't help but giggle. Before all of those things would have made her sad and lonly in desperation, now she had a sex parter... 'NO!' she stoped herself... "he's not a sex parter he's the father to my baby!" Joan looked around to find the store atendants, including her friends, staring at her, a sad look had taken control of Adams face.

"You don't love me do you Jane?" Adam cried, as he turned away and exited the store, silent tears streaking his cheaks. Joan would have chased after him, but she hadn't known what to think, and knew she needed to talk to Grace before she had decided on what more to say to her boyfriend.

When the girls met up with Adam again, he was sitting on a bench outside of 'the baby store', Tightly squeezing a white frilled dress in his arms.

"It's a girl?" Joan asked, a tear falling from her eye. When she had asked Adam to join her for the sonigram, she had requested that only he be told the babys sex. She had not been sure she wanted to know.

"Yeah" Adam whispered, slowly lifting his head up to look at Joan. "It's a girl".

It was as if being hit by a semi truck when reality had finaly come across Joan. She looked down at the red satin dress, then over to the small white one in wich Adam had been holding... without as much of a second thought Joan turned and began running back in the direction of wich they had just come.

"Jane, where are you going?" Adam called to her

When Joan returned, the dress was gone and a hundred dollar bill was left in her hand. She reached for Adam, pulling him up and walking hand in hand into 'the baby store'.

"I take it Club Teens been called off?" Grace sighed, walking back into 'Spencers Gifts'. "I'll catch up with you later".
