This is just a little one-shot I thought up in church one day. Do you suppose that's a sin? O.o Oh, well…anyway, I like it because it can apply either to YGO or to DNAngel, depending on my mood. Hehehe…

I don't own YGO, I don't own DNAngel, and I most definitely do not own…well, anything else.

Enjoy!

Contrast

Light and dark are two very interesting things. Though total opposites, their stark contrast actually makes them similar in some ways. We, however, view them only as separate entities, born only to battle one another. Good and evil. Joy and fear. White purity and tainted blackness.

But they are much more complex than that.

We see the dark only as an absence of the light, and the light conversely as a mere lack of the dark, but in reality, one cannot exist without the other. By being born opposite each other, the two are more connected than we could ever imagine.

A young boy. He is in his early teens, and even so is unusually small for his age. Laughter rings. Other teens join him, joking around and having fun. His eyes sparkle with sheer innocence, abnormally clean and pure.

One twinkle offsets the rest in his eyes. It glints with its own unique hue, obviously not representative of the boy's untouched innocence.

Deep within the corridors of the boy's mind, another soul lurks, watching him play. Though hidden, his excitement rises, influenced by the emotions of the boy's soul.

You see, light and dark mustn't be all that different, for they seem to have one thing in commonshadows.

A shadow appears to be the dark, slithering along ground and walls and enveloping those in its path in darkness.

But shadows are created by light.

For a shadow to be born and thrive, the light must give up a part of itself to the darkness, and in return the shadow becomes a follower of the light. When the light sparkles with joy, the shadow is happily bright. When the light begins to dim, the shadow also fades. When the light dances, the shadow can't help but follow along with every move, twisting and turning at the slightest motion.

It grows late, and the boy becomes weary (as all boys do) and and settles into bed for a night of rest. Within him, the darker presence also calms, knowing that the excitement is over.

For awhile, all is quiet.

Suddenly, though, the boy's fingers clutch his covers tightly, and his face tightens into a grimace. He turns over, then begins to toss violently in his sleep, all the while moaning in pain.

The other soul inside him senses his fear and anxiety and is immediately filled with matching worry. He rushes to find the source of these emotions and discovers the boy in a state of turmoil, suffering from an unseen infection.

Both souls begin to panic, one heaving in pain on the bed and the other nearly convulsing in mimicked pain from the emotions pouring into him.

As suddenly as he started, the boy freezes where he is. After only a split second, his infection relentlessly takes hold of him. The sharp eyes of the second soul part slowly as he senses the pain fading, then widen in shock as the boy's body slowly begins to disappear. The dark spirit reaches out to save his light, but all too soon he is overcome, taken by the unforgiving blackness.

But what happens when the light is gone? Without light to support the shadow and keep it pure, a shadow is no different from any other dark part of the world. It is enveloped by the darkness and becomes a part of it, never to be seen again as an individual entity.

In essence, without light, a shadow is the dark…

The light in the boy's bedroom fades, and finally goes out. The shadow emits a final scream of terror and pain, but not a single soul hears its cry.
