Pippin was lying on his stomach, under a tree, thinking. He looked down to the road and saw Merry coming. "'Allo, Merry!" he said, as Merry came to sit beside him. "Hello, Pip! Why the long face?" Pippin sighed. "It's over, Merry." Merry frowned. "What's over, Pip?" He had no clue what his cousin was talking about. "Me and Ruby," Pip said. "We're over. Have you ever noticed that every lass in the Shire is after us?" Merry laughed. "I know. Grand, isn't it?" Pippin frowned. "Not quite. The only reason us because of this." He pointed to his livery. "And they want to meet the King and Queen of Gondor, get expensive jewelry, and become the Thain's wife. Or, in your case, the Master of Buckland's wife. Had you never noticed it, Merry?"
Merry sighed. "Yes, Pip, I have noticed it. But, do you know what?" Pippin rolled over onto his back, and groaned. "What, Merry?" Merry smiled. "I believe that there is someone special out there, who will love you just for you." "Like who?" Pippin scoffed. "Well," said Merry, thinking. "What about Ruby's sister, Lily? I've noticed that she seems to like you a lot. What about her?"
