Sunrise, Sunset
A post Letters from Pegasus Drabble
Major John Sheppard stood alone on the highest tier of Atlantis. His hands rested on the rail of the balcony as he looked out over the water.
There was a lot of water. He could never get over it; staring out and seeing water. He knew there was a land mass out there, but he found it so hard to believe sometimes.
The sun crawled slowly across the sky, reflecting like a jewel on the cerulean blue waves. He watched the reflection as it danced across the ocean.
The message had been sent to Earth.
He closed his eyes and bowed his head. What was happening on Earth? His hands tightened on the rails as he thought back to the planet he and Teyla had gone to.
Orin's planet.
What had that light been?
Teyla…
He opened his eyes and looked up. The sun was nearing the horizon, setting after a long day. The water turned a brilliant shade of orange, with red and pink hues glazed over it.
The door slid open behind him. He didn't move; he just continued staring at the sunset. He missed the mountain sunsets of Colorado.
"Major?"
It was Teyla. She joined him at the rail and the breeze blew her hair back away from her face.
"I wanted to thank you."
"For what, Teyla?" Sheppard asked wearily.
"For waiting on Orin and his family."
Oh, well that explained why she was here.
He shrugged noncommittally. She turned and watched the sunset. Purple began to set in the sky, and twinkling stars slowly appeared. Out there, somewhere, was Earth.
John sighed. Teyla looked at him, seeing his head bowed, his eyes shut tightly, and tears rolling down his cheeks. Her mouth opened in surprise, and then she smiled. He had definitely changed since she had first met him.
She slid her hand over his and leaned against him. He froze, not used to the contact.
"You've changed, John."
"Times have changed, Teyla."
"Yes, but you have changed with them."
They went silent, contemplating that.
The sun set, raising fire to the heavens and night spread her dark wings.
Teyla stood on tiptoe and lightly kissed John's cheek. He turned to her and smiled.
They stayed to watch the sunrise.
