This is the kind-of, sort-of, not-really remake of In the Palace . . . All right, so it isn't at all. I tried, I really did, but my plot just didn't work. As you will notice by the title and this prologue, it is sort of angst, but I will attempt to lighten it up. There will be no shonen-ai, though I am going to make the reader may take some parts that way, as Ryou and Bakura are going to have a close friendship. There will most likely be no romance. Drunken miscalculations, maybe, but no full blown romance. . . I now have a live journal, so if you want to know about why I'm not updating or you for some reason care about my personal life, check there. The link is in my bio. Read and review!

To Live and have Lost
Prologue
There was a beautiful city in the middle of a barren desert. The city, if looked at from above, was a dazzling white. This glorious city was near a large river, and was normally bustling with activity. On an average day, men were busy with construction, farming, or priestly duties. Women were taking care of household activities, as their young children helped in the fields or played with their toys or pets.
Alas, this was not a normal day in this marvelous city. This day would be remembered by Egyptians for generations, as it would change hundreds of lives forever.
Screams filled the air and flames were licking hungrily at the building, making the heat so intense that the bricks started melting. The walls began caving in, the ceilings having collapsed long ago. Egyptians all around were screaming, trying to find an exit in the chaos that had once been the royal palace.
One small boy stood outside the wreckage, wailing: "He can't be dead! He just can't be! Father!" Some women tried to console the young boy who had been separated from his father at such a young age. Needless to say, the women were no help to the sobbing boy. Though still crying over his father, the boy struggled to stand and called out: "Brother! Brother where are you? I won't be able to stand losing you too, my brother!"
As he struggled to get away from the women to look for his brother, the palace collapsed with one final scream.
